  • The article provides an assessment of the dynamics of cancer incidence and mortality in the territory of Aktobe city for the period 2000-2010. The most common cancers were found in the lungs, stomach, esophagus and breast throughout the period, with slight increase in colon cancer and decrease in esophageal cancer being apparent. In an attempt to cast light on effects of environmental pollution, the authors also compared data on total emissions of chemicals into the air. While preliminary, the findings provide a basic picture of cancer burden in this industrialised city in Kazakhstan which should be followed up by more comprehensive monitoring.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a hydrologic simulation model to predict daily streamflow from a small agricultural watershed considering irrigation return flow. The proposed IREFLOW(Irrigation REturn FLOW) model consists of hillslope runoff model, irrigation scheme drainage model, and irrigation return flow model, and simulates daily streamflow from an irrigated watershed. Two small watersheds were selected for monitoring of hydrological components and evaluating the model application. The relative error (RE) between observed and simulated daily streamflow were 2.9% and 6.4%, respectively, on two small agricultural watersheds (Baran and Gicheon) for the calibration period. The values of RE in daliy streamflow for the validation period were 6.0% for the Baran watershed, and 2.8% for the Gicheon watershed.

  • In this study, the MODIS NDVI for the period of $2000{\sim}2007$ was collected and processed to obtain VCI and SVI which are the quantitative indexes of drought. The VCI and SVI based on NDVI can be used for understanding seasonal pattern of vegetation, drought identification and quantitative analysis of drought. VCI and SVI compared with monthly precipitation ratio to average, Standardized Precipitation Index(SPI), and etc., which are used to identify spring drought, to analyze drought region, similarity and difference in drought severity. In addition, frequency of Spring droughts were calculated for the period of $2000{\sim}2007$, and the usability of the MODIS images as a tool for establishing countermeasures against drought was presented by analyzing drought frequently areas.

  • The effects of laser welding beam quality is very large. However, not an analysing case was found for the difference on the plasma emission signal during laser welding according to the beam quality. Therefore, in this study, we compared and evaluated penetration and signal change according to the beam quality at the a similar wavelength band by using a fiber laser and Nd:YAG laser. In addition, we took high speed videography in order to make sure that FFT analysis reflects the actual motion period of keyhole and found the period of video analysis and FFT mostly matched. As a result, it is expected to secure higher reliability than evaluating signal intensity when appling FFT to monitoring.

  • Temporal trends of ozone concentration in Jinju were investigated by using observation data from 3 air quality monitoring stations for the period of 2004~2008. In addition, spatial comparisons of ozone concentration at Jeoguri, upwind and downwind directions of Jinju were investigated between May and September 2009. Annual mean exhibited increasing trends +1.7ppb/yr throughout the study period. In the case of diurnal variation, the lowest ozone concentration was shown from 7 am to 8 am and the highest around 4 pm. The ozone concentrations of Jeoguri station of the south coast were higher than Jinju. In particular, the upwind direction of Jinju had relatively hight ozone concentration

  • To understand the current seismic activity and regional tectonic status in and around Gyeongsang basin, Korea Institute of Geology, Mining, and Materials(KIGAM) has performed the earthquake monitoring around the Gyeongsang basin since early 1980's with portable analog seismic instruments for about two months every year. As a part of POSEIDON project, Korea-Japan joint observation around gyeongsang basin in 1991 and 1992, was performed using by temporary seismic station. KIGAM has been continuously operated nine short-period 3-components digital seismic stations since the end of 1994. During the observation period, 247 earthquakes were analyzed and their magnitude was less than 4.5. In general, we could not find any relationship between seismic activity and known surface geological features. But the epicenters were rather concentrated with NW-SE direction. The most active seismicity was found in Gyeongbuk Gyeongjugun Seokeupri and Hyodongri, and Yeongilgun Janggiri and Guryongpo in land, and in three region along the east coast which are 10km and 30km east off from Gampo and 30km east off from Jongja in offshore.

  • To prevent safety hazards in dangerous working area, we have proposed an intelligent image analysis system. Six common patterns of safety violations of workers' are defined and its motion detection algorithms are developed for alarm to CCTV monitoring system. Developed algorithms are implemented at 195 dangerous areas such as chemical and gas treated room. The results of violated motion detection ratio by developed system shows 94.95% of true positive cases, and 0.21% of false positive cases from all 587,645 event cases in one month implementation period. In the period, it is observed that the number of safety rule violations and the following accidents are decreased.

  • Long period eclipsing binary 32 Cygni was photometrically observed in 1992 at Yonsei University Observatory. Instrumental differential magnitude and standardized magnitude of this star show some intrinsic light variations. Some possible explanations will be discussed. BVRI photometric observations show that 30 Cyg may be a variable star. A further monitoring of 30 Cyg is therefore called for justification of such evidences.

  • Runoff and nutrient concentrations were monitored to identify pollutant load characteristics of a subwatershed in the Jooam lake. Observed concentrations of T-N and T-P were $1.445{\sim}3.980mg/{\ell}\;and\;0{\sim}0.273mg/{\ell}$, respectively. Runoff load of T-N, T-P by single storm occurred June 24th 2001 contributed 55% of T-N and 41% T-P of total pollutant load during study period.

  • The characteristics of PAHs accumulated on pine needles which were used as passive samplers of atmospheric POPs were studied. Atmospheric PAHs were accumulated on pine needles. The absorbed rate of PAHs was higher in gaseous state than in particulate and is not constant. The accumulation rate did not change too much among different classes of pine trees. Therefore young pine needles is better as a passive sampler of atmospheric PAHs for short monitoring period.
