  • An yield monitoring system plays a key role in precision farming. An yield monitoring system and a DGPS were implemented to a widely used domestic combine for yield mapping of a small sized paddy field, and yield mapping algorithms were investigated in this study. The yield variation in the 0.1ha rice paddy field was measured by installing a yield flow sensor and a grain moisture sensor at the end of the clean grain elevator discharging grains into a grain tank. Yield map of the test filed was drawn in a point map and a linear interpolated map based on the result of the field test. The size of a unit yield grid in yield mapping was determined based on the combine traveling speed, effective harvesting width and data storing period. It was possible to construct the yield map of a small sized paddy field.

  • DuraMote is a remote sensing system developed for the "NIST TIP project: next generation SCADA for prevention and mitigation of water system infrastructure disaster". It is designed for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) of ruptures in water pipes. Micro-electro mechanical (MEMS) accelerometers, which record the vibration of the pipe wall, are used detect the ruptures. However, the performance of Duramote cannot be verified directly on a water distribution system because it lacks an acceptable recordable level of ambient vibration. Instead, a long-span cable-stayed bridge is an ideal test-bed to validate the accuracy, the reliability, and the robustness of DuraMote because the bridge has an acceptable level of ambient vibration. The acceleration data recorded on the bridge were used to identify the modal properties of the structure and to verify the performance of DuraMote. During the test period, the bridge was subjected to heavy rain, wind, and a typhoon but the system demonstrates its robustness and durability.

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) is performed by artificial ventilation and thoracic compression for the patient under emergent situation to maintain at least the minimum level of respiration and blood circulation for life survival. Good quality CPR requires monitoring respiration. We developed a system for continuous monitoring respirational signal while CPR, using respirational airflow sensor for CPR. Signal extraction circuit obtains pressure signal while CPR. Obtained signal would be performed analog-digital conversion and changed to airflow value by characteristic formula. Single inspiration and expiration were considered a period. Detected valid data were displayed LCD.

  • This paper presents the perspective of the Structural Mechanics program of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) on the damage assessment of structures for the period 2006-2009 when the author was serving as Program Manager at AFOSR. It is found that damage assessment of structures plays a very important role in assuring the safety and operational readiness of US Air Force fleet. The current fleet has many aging aircraft, which poses a considerable challenge for the operators and maintainers. The nondestructive evaluation technology is rather mature and able to detect damage with considerable reliability during the periodic maintenance inspections. The emerging structural health monitoring methodology has great potential, because it will use on-board damage detection sensors and systems, will be able to offer on-demand structural health bulletins. Considerable fundamental and applied research is still needed to enable the development, implementation, and dissemination of structural health monitoring technology.

  • A method is applied for the estimation of structural damage of tall slender structures using natural frequency and displacements measurements by GPS. The relationship between the variation in the global stiffness matrix (or in the stiffness of each finite element) and the change in the natural frequencies of the structure is given. In engineering practice the number of frequencies which can be derived by GPS measurement of long-period structures will be equal to one, two or three first natural frequencies. This allows us in initial studies to detect damage with frequency changes based on forward methods in which the measured frequencies are compared with the predicted analytical data. This idea, of health monitoring from possible changes to natural frequencies, or from a statement of excessive displacements is applied to the Stuttgart TV Tower.

  • Taking a bledes axle of rotary tiller as a example, this paper discusses influences of four loading essential factors, which are strengthened amplitude, cycle times, loading sequence and loading frequency. in fatigue life. Determination principles of above four factors and monitoring methods of fatigue damage by local strain are dealt with. The actual field testing check of farm machinery is rapidly simulated by laboratory program fatigue test can shorten the period of development and improvement of a product. In the time of in-door simulation test, damage monitoring and four loading essential factors, which are strengthened amplitude , cycle times, loading sequence and loading frequency, have to be dealt with . If these problems are solved successfully, it is possible to accelerated test speed, reduce costs and manhours, and raise accuracy of test result. However strengthening method, loading pattern and influence of loading frequency on test result have not so far been discu sed systematically, damage monitoring is even more a difficult problem. Authors have studied above problems with the object of blades axle of rotary tiller.

  • In this project, under the server-client environment, GIS for the radiological emergency and control system of the vehicles for the environmental radioactivity monitoring was complete. This system is able to display environmental radioactivity data and vehicle's locations through wireless network on real time. Furthermore, it supports not only static analysis function with the collected data regarding nuclear type, collecting time period and vehicle's location but also a documents printing out function.

  • Daily and seasonal variations of the ambient gamma ray exposure rates were measured by using a pressurized ion chamber from January 2003 to December 2005 in the CheongJu Regional Radiation Monitoring Post and the patterns of the distributions were studied. The annual average of the daily variation of the exposure rate was $\sim0.17{\mu}R/h$. The exposure rate was found to be maximum during 8:00 am to 9:00 am and minimum during 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. For the annual data, the exposure rate was the minimum during the month of February. The exposure rate increased from February to mid-October (except during the period from May to July with no change) and decreased from October to February. The seasonal variation was found to be about $1{\mu}R/h$. Most of the measured values (96%) of the exposure rates fell under the normal distribution with a deviation of less than 4.8% and the remaining 4% had large fluctuations caused mainly by the rainfalls.

  • Condition monitoring technology has recently been received much attention in the light of its significance on the maintenance of complex machineries such as turbines in power plants. Currently, turbines in power plants are maintained by scheduled overhaul based on the manufacturer's recommendations and the utility's experience. Although this preventive maintenance is known to be very effective, operators have less access to identify failure of elements when it happens between overhaul period. Therefore, in this study, a development of a on-line condition monitoring system through wear debris analysis of lubricating oils is aimed with a view to detecting abnormal wear behaviour of bearings and other wet-components at an early stage, allowing better outage scheduling and minimizing forced outages. For field application purposes, the on-line system developed was installed on the turbine of the No.4 unit at Ulsan Power Plant and its performance has been evaluated on site.

  • In this paper the recent research and application activities on smart structure technologies for civil infra structures in Korea are briefly introduced. The developments of structural health monitoring systems and effective retrofit/maintenance methodologies for infra structures have become active in Korea since the middle of 1990's, as the number of the deteriorated infra structures, mostly built on the rapidly industrialized period of 1970's, has increased very rapidly. Discussions are made on smart sensors, non destructive technologies, monitoring and assessment methods and systems for civil infra structures.
