  • Since the natural disasters such as floods, droughts, heat wave and cold wave are increasing, the need for risk management is necessary to minimize the damage with utilizing IT technology. Also, the monitoring services of disaster response type have been developed and applied. Recently, the open source hardware based on the signal of the sensor, or the monitoring studies have been carried. In this paper, by analyzing a low-cost open source hardware platform such as Beagle board, we examine the utilization of the hardware-based module for sensor monitoring.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to improve smart monitoring and monitoring management technology in long tunnels by investigating and analyzing the normal operation rates of monitoring hardware in the long tunnels of high-speed and urban railways. Method: This study evaluated, analyzed, and compared the normal operation rate of 6-8 types of monitoring hardware for each long tunnel, targeting three high-speed railway lines with a long tunnel (i.e., Suseo-Pyeongtaek Line, Gyeongbu Line, and Honam Line) and two urban railway groups with a long tunnel (i.e., Seoul Metro Lines 5, 6, and 7, and 9). Result: The rank of the normal operation rate of monitoring hardware was in the order of Suseo-Pyeongtaek High-Speed Railway (92.1%), Seoul Metro Lines 5, 6, and 7 (85.8%), Seoul Metro Line 9 (85.2%), Gyeongbu High-speed Railway (80.5%), and Honam High-speed Railway (46.7%). Conclusion: The mean normal operation rate of the monitoring hardware in the three high-speed railway long tunnels was 83.4%, and that of the two urban railway long tunnels was 85.5%, indicating that the deviation between them was small. The mean normal operation rate of the monitoring hardware in the long tunnels of the five high-speed and urban railway lines was 84.2%.

  • When distributed powers are interconnected to the grid, lack of source stability may cause some events that should be measured and stored as soon as they occur. This paper presents a real-time hardware system that has been developed for quick and reliable monitoring of the distributed powers quality. The system is composed of a digital signal processor (MPC7410, Motorola) and a 16 bits A/D board (VMIVME3122, GE). To guarantee the real time operation, it is based on a real time OS (VxWorks). Hardware tests of the embedded system have been made to check the performances of the proposed system. Test signals of several events are generated by using a LabView (hardware) system. The tests show that the system complies with the desired IEEE standard for power quality monitoring.

  • The Deep-sea miner system is composed of body, actuators, sensors, and devices for control and monitoring. At present, we are manufacturing the miner's body included actuators and already consisted with off-the-shelf embedded controller. But sensors and those devices were just determined. To previously test performance of embedded controller which manages control and monitoring of miner system, its simulator must be developed for control and monitoring. Hardware-In-the-Loop(HIL) simulation is being increasingly used in industrial applications. This is an effective tool for the evaluation of electric system and drives. In the HIL simulator, we can test and design the control and monitoring system freely without the risk of hardware ruins and the load of expenses. Also the programming software for miner operating is verified on the HIL simulator. In this paper, we introduce the concept of HIL simulator for control and monitoring of deep-sea miner.

  • The emerging sensor-based structural health monitoring (SHM) technology has a potential for cost-effective maintenance of aging civil infrastructure systems. The author proposes to integrate continuous and global monitoring using on-structure sensors with targeted local non-destructive evaluation (NDE). Significant technical challenges arise, however, from the lack of cost-effective sensors for monitoring spatially large structures, as well as reliable methods for interpreting sensor data into structural health conditions. This paper reviews recent efforts and advances made in addressing these challenges, with example sensor hardware and health monitoring software developed in the author's research center. The hardware includes a novel fiber optic accelerometer, a vision-based displacement sensor, a distributed strain sensor, and a microwave imaging NDE device. The health monitoring software includes a number of system identification methods such as the neural networks, extended Kalman filter, and nonlinear damping identificaiton based on structural dynamic response measurement. These methods have been experimentally validated through seismic shaking table tests of a realistic bridge model and tested in a number of instrumented bridges and buildings.

  • Sensors based bridge monitoring system (SBBMS) is designed to perform real-time monitoring and to store the performance history of in-service bridges. In general, visual inspections play a major role in maintenance of in-service bridges; however, they are not adequate to document the behavior of a bridge. Therefore, visual inspections and sensor based monitoring systems complement each other. Sensor based bridge monitoring systems consist of hardware and software systems. The hardware system contains the sensors and data-loggers to measure the behavior of a structure, the communicational equipment to transmit the measured data from the site to the monitoring center, and the computers to arrange and analyze the data. The software system controls data-loggers, arranges and analyzes the measured data, makes real-time display, stores the performance history.

  • Environmental downtime produces a significant cost to organizations and makes them unable to do business because what happens in the data center affects everyone. In addition, the amount of electrical energy consumed by data centers increases with the amount of computing power installed. Installation of physical Information Technology and facilities related to environmental concerns, such as monitoring temperature, humidity, power, flood, smoke, air flow, and room entry, is the most proactive way to reduce the unnecessary costs of expensive hardware replacement or unplanned downtime and decrease energy consumed by servers. In this paper, we present remote system for monitoring datacenter implementing using open-source hardware platforms; Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and the Gobetwino. The sensed data displayed through Arduino are transferred using Gobetwino to the nearest host server such as temperature, humidity and distance every time an object hitting another object or a person coming in entrance. The raspberry Pi records the sensed data at the remote location. The objective of collecting temperature and humidity data allows monitoring of the server's health and getting alerts if things start to go wrong. When the temperature hits $50^{\circ}C$, the supervisor at remote headquarters would get a SMS, and then they would take appropriate actions to reduce electrical costs and preserve functionality of servers in data centers.

The adaptable and classifiable wireless sensor node network is used to achieve the data acquisition and multi-hop wireless communication of parameters of the monitoring base station environment including repeaters. The structure of the system is proposed and the hardware architecture of the system is designed, and the system operating procedures is proposed. As a result of field test, designed hardware platform operated with 50kbps bit rate and 5MHz channel spacing at 2040Hz. The wireless monitoring system can be managed and swiftly retreated without support of base station environmental monitoring.

  • The process of automation and monitoring in industrial control system involves the use of many types of sensors. A programmable logic controller plays an important role in the automation of the different processes in the power plant system. The major control units are boiler for temperature and pressure, turbine for speed of motor, generator for voltage, conveyer belt for fuel. The power plant units are controlled using microcontrollers and PLCs, but FPGA can be the feasible solution. The paper focused on the design and simulation of hardware chip to monitor boiler, turbine, generator and conveyer belt. The hardware chip of the plant is designed in Xilinx Vivado Simulator 17.4 software using VHDL programming. The methodology includes VHDL code design, simulation, verification and testing on Virtex-5 FPGA hardware. The system has four independent buzzers used to indicate the status of the boiler, generator, turbine motor and conveyer belt in on/off conditions respectively. The GSM is used to display corresponding message on the mobile to know the status of the device in on/off condition. The system is very much helpful for the industries working on plant automation with FPGA hardware integration.
