  • In this study, semi-rigid light-weight framed structures analysis model (SERIFS) was developed by advancing the LEIFS model. This model enables us to analyze simultaneous effects of large deflection and semi-rigid connection by computing unbalanced load occurring in the process of repeated loading through equalization of bending moments and torsion. This model is also able to handle the effect of the semi-rigid connection and large deflection by modifying the elastic stiffness matrix using moment-rotation behavior of connection. Moment-rotation behavior of the semi-rigid connection was adopted from the experimental results of load-vertical displacement of frame element In conclusion, this model achieves to analyze the nonlinear and large deflection behavior on the semi-rigid and light-weight steel frame connection.

  • In this study, the seismic performance of connections between filled composite beam (CG beams) and forming angle composite (FAC) column was experimentally evaluated. First, the bending tests were conducted on two CG beams and the axial tests were conducted on two FAC columns. Then, based on these preliminary test results, the cyclic loading test were performed on two interior connections between CG beam and FAC column. The main difference of two specimens is the plate shape of the CG beam. The test results showed that both specimens achieved the maximum story drift capacity over 0.04 radian which is required for special moment frame.

  • In this paper, the effect of damping ratio on nonlinear dynamic analysis response and dynamic increase factor (DIF) in nonlinear static analysis of structures against column removal are investigated and a modified empirical DIF is presented. To this end, series of low and mid-rise moment frame structures with different span lengths and number of storeys are designed and the effect of damping ratio in DIF is investigated, performing several nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. For each damping ratio, a nonlinear dynamic analysis and a step by step nonlinear static analysis are carried out and the modified empirical DIF formulas are derived. The results of the analysis reveal that DIF is decreased with increasing damping ratio. Finally, an empirical formula is recommended that relates to damping ratio. Therefore, the new modified DIF can be used with nonlinear static analysis instead of nonlinear dynamic analysis to assess the progressive collapse potential of moment frame buildings with different damping ratios.

  • This study lotuses on the seismic behavior of 3-, 9-, and 20-story steel moment resisting frame (MRF) structures designed in accordance with the 2000 International Building Code using different Response Modification factors (R factors) 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12. For a detailed case study, 30 different structures were evaluated for twenty ground motions representing the hazard level which is equal to a 2% probability exceeding in 50 years (2% in 50 years). The results showed that the current R factors provide conservative designs for the 3- and 9-story buildings for the Collapse Prevention performance objective. However, the 20-story buildings designed without using the minimum requirement of spectral acceleration CS prescribed in the IBC 2000 did not satisfy the seismic performance for Collapse Prevention performance.

  • A new method for designing moment resisting concrete frames failing in a global mode is presented in this paper. Starting from the analysis of the typical collapse mechanisms of frames subjected to horizontal forces, the method is based on the application of the kinematic theorem of plastic collapse. The beam section properties are assumed to be known quantities, because they are designed to resist vertical loads. As a consequence, the unknowns of the design problem are the column sections. They are determined by means of design conditions expressing that the kinematically admissible multiplier of the horizontal forces corresponding to the global mechanism has to be the smallest among all kinematically admissible multipliers. In addition, the proposed design method includes the influence of second-order effects. In particular, second-order effects can play an important role in the seismic design and can be accounted for by means of the mechanism equilibrium curves of the analysed collapse mechanism. The practical application of the proposed methodology is herein presented with reference to the design of a multi-storey frame whose pattern of yielding is validated by means of push-over analysis.

  • The effect of column loss location on the structural response of steel moment resisting frames (MRF) is investigated in this study. A series of nonlinear static and dynamic analyses were performed to determine the resistance of a generic frame to an arbitrary column loss and detect the structural members that are susceptible to failure progression beyond that point. Both force-controlled and deformation-controlled actions based on UFC 4-023-03 and ASCE/SEI 41-06 were implemented to define the acceptance criteria for nine APM cases defined in this study. Results revealed that the structural resistance against an arbitrary column loss in the top story is at least 80% smaller than that of the bottom story. In addition, it was found that the dynamic increase factor (DIF) at the failure point is at most 1.13.

  • Steel plate shear walls are recently used as efficient seismic lateral resisting systems. These lateral resistant structures are implemented to provide more strength, stiffness and ductility in limited space areas. In this study, the seismic behavior of the multi-story steel frames with steel plate shear walls are investigated for buildings with 4, 8, 12 and 16 stories using verified computational modeling platforms. Different number of steel moment bays with distinctive lengths are investigated to effectively determine the deflection amplification factor for low-rise and high-rise structures. Results showed that the dissipated energy in moment frames with steel plates are significantly related to the inside panel. It is shown that more than 50% of the dissipated energy under various ground motions is dissipated by the panel itself, and increasing the steel plate length leads to higher energy dissipation capability. The deflection amplification factor is studied in details for various verified parametric cases, and it is concluded that for a typical multi-story moment frame with steel plate shear walls, the amplification factor is 4.93 which is less than the recommended conservative values in the design codes. It is shown that the deflection amplification factor decreases if the height of the building increases, for which the frames with more than six stories would have less recommended deflection amplification factor. In addition, increasing the number of bays or decreasing the steel plate shear wall length leads to a reduction of the deflection amplification factor.

  • This study presents a hunting search based optimum design algorithm for engineering optimization problems. Hunting search algorithm is an optimum design method inspired by group hunting of animals such as wolves, lions, and dolphins. Each of these hunters employs hunting in a different way. However, they are common in that all of them search for a prey in a group. Hunters encircle the prey and the ring of siege is tightened gradually until it is caught. Hunting search algorithm is employed for the automation of optimum design process, during which the design variables are selected for the minimum objective function value controlled by the design restrictions. Three different examples, namely welded beam, cellular beam and moment resisting steel frame are selected as numerical design problems and solved for the optimum solution. Each example differs in the following ways: Unlike welded beam design problem having continuous design variables, steel frame and cellular beam design problems include discrete design variables. Moreover, while the cellular beam is designed under the provisions of BS 5960, LRFD-AISC (Load and Resistant Factor Design-American Institute of Steel Construction) is considered for the formulation of moment resisting steel frame. Levy Flights is adapted to the simple hunting search algorithm for better search. For comparison, same design examples are also solved by using some other well-known search methods in the literature. Results reveal that hunting search shows good performance in finding optimum solutions for each design problem.
