  • The effect of mold rotation on the transport process and resultant macrosegregation pattern during solidification of an Al-Cu alloy contained in a vertical axisymmetric annular mold cooled from the inner wall is numerically investigated. The mold initially at rest starts to rotate at a prescribed angular velocity simultaneously with the beginning of cooling. Computed results for a representative case show that the mold rotation essentially suppresses the development of both thermal and solutal convections in the melt, creating distinct characteristics such as the liquidus front, flow pattern and temperature distribution from those for the stationary mold. Thermal convection which develops at the early stages of cooling is soon extinguished by the rotating flow induced during spin-up, and thus does not effectively remove the initial superheat from the melt. On the other hand, solutal convection, though it weakens considerably and is confined within the mushy zone, still predominates over the solute redistribution process. With increasing the angular velocity, the solute transport in the axial direction is enhanced, whereas that in the radial direction is reduced. The final macrosegregation formed in the mold rotating at moderate angular velocities appears to be favorable in comparison with the stationary casting, in that not only relatively homogenized composition is achieved, but also a severely positive-segregated channel is restrained.

  • This study analyzes the effect of anodizing conditions on nanopore formation on a cylindrical aluminum roll. In general, a nanopore is formed at the center of a concave base-pattern. Occasionally, multiple nanopores are formed on a single base-pattern. However, to control the diameter and interpore distance precisely, single nanopores are required. In this study, the ratio of the number of single nanopores to the total number of nanopores was investigated by varying anodizing conditions such as electrode area, electrolyte concentration, and rotation speed of the roll mold. The areal ratio of the counter-electrode to the working electrode (aluminum), electrolyte concentration, and the roll-mold rotation speed were varied from 0.4% to 42%, 0.07 M to 0.3 M, and 5 rpm to 75 rpm, respectively. The experimental results showed that the single-nanopore ratio increased with increasing counter-electrode area and electrolyte concentration. However, the rotation speed had no significant effect on nanopore shape.

  • High-temperature Superconductor(HTS) tubes were fabricated in term of different processing variables such as preheating temperature, speed of mold rotation and cooling rate by centrifugal forming method. For powder melting by induction the optimum range of melting temperatures and preheating temperature were $1050^{\circ}C{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$ for 30min, respectively. The mould roating speed was 1000rpm. A tube was annealed at $840^{\circ}C$ for 72hours in oxygen atmosphere. The plate-like grains were well developed along the roating direction and typical grain size was about more than $40{\mu}m$. It was found that Ic values increased with increasing the preheating temperature and speed of mold rotation. While Ic decreased with increasing the cooling rate. The measured Ic in $50mm{\times}70mm{\times}2.5mm$ tube was about 896Amp.

  • Gravity tilt pour casting can effectively guarantee the reduction of various casting defects by controlling the rotation speed and the tilting angle of the mold during tilt pouring. The relationship between casting process parameters and the soundness of castings has been investigated in order to determine the optimum process variables in the gravity tilt pour casting process. In order to evaluate the effect of rotation speed on mold filling patterns, a video camera was employed to visualize the in-situ fluid flow behavior of the molten metal, and the relevant fluid velocity was also estimated. X-ray and mechanical tests were also performed to evaluate the effect of fluid velocity on casting quality. With the rotation speed lower than 0.5 r.p.m., which is nearly corresponding to the critical velocity of stability in the fluid flow, sound castings were obtained without having any casting defects. It can be concluded that the gravity tilt pour casting process is an effective process for manufacturing sound casting products with enhanced physical and mechanical properties.

  • In manufacturing die and mold, polishing: is important as it takes as much as 50% of the production cost. In this research, an attachable type polishing device to a WC machining center was developed. experiments were done with a special1y designed rotation type polishing device. Also an ultra-sonic (vibration type) waving device was introduced to acquire finer surface finishes. From the constructed data base based on the experimental results, it is shown that optimal polishing conditions are generated by the combined use of the rotation type tool and the vibration type tool.

  • Micro spherical lens mold processing method based on mechanical one completes a spherical shape by setting a diamond tool of hundreds $\mu$m radius on spins with high speed and then using Z-axis vertical feeding motion like the fabrication of micro drilling. In this method, we can see unprocessed parts shaped like cylinder and cone and check increasing chatter marks and burrs by setting errors of the central axis of rotation on the edge of the tool. That is why this method doesn't suit for the optical lens mold. In this paper presents unprocessed parts are disappeared and chatter marks and burrs are decreased from centre of the lens after using Run-out measuring and setting system on run-out occurred from setting tool. Also the fabrication characteristics of 6:4 Brass, A1601, PMMA are compared and analyzed, establishing the optimum machining condition on each material.

  • Functionally graded microstructure of centrifugal cast Al-Si alloy, especially distribution of primary Si particles according to the changes of melt pouring temperature and rotation frequency was investigated by numerical simulation. Moving velocity of Si particles increased as the melt pouring temperature and rotational frequency of mold increased. Therefore, segregation tendency of primary Si particles toward inner side of cylindrical sample increased as the melt pouring temperature and rotational frequency of mold increased. Rich distribution region of particles was located at 0.9, 0.7, 0.4 mm from inner surface of cylindrical sample under the centrifugal cast condition of $750^{\circ}C$ melt pouring temperature and 1500, 2000 and 2500 rpm mold rotational frequencies, respectively, by numerical simulation.

  • This study intends to reduce forming load by adding die rotation to flange-upsetting process. Materials arc formed by the compression and rotational torque which are accrued from rotation of the lower die accompanied by axial compression of the punch. For the theoretic analysis of flange-upsetting process using rotation die, slab method was used. Furthermore, for the verification of the theoretic analysis results, FEM simulation using DEFORM 3D a commercial software was done, and through the model material experiment using Prasticine, the results were compared and reviewed. Flange-upsetting process using rotation die shows reduced forming load compared with process without die rotation and demonstrates uniform distribution of strain. And as for the effect of the reduction of forming load, the less the aspect ratio(h0/d0) and the greater friction coefficient, the greater effect is. With increase in die rotation velocity, the effect of forming load reduction also increases little by little, but its effect on forming load reduction is very negligible compared with other forming parameters. Theoretic analysis results and simulation results coincided pretty well. The flange-upsetting process using die rotation are evaluated as useful process that can produce reduction of forming load and uniform strain.

  • Ultra-high brightness and thin displays need to optical micro-patterns which can uniformly diffuse the lights and low loss. The micro random patterns have characteristics to rise the optical efficiency such as light extraction, uniform diffusion. For this reason, various fabrication processes are studied for random patterns. In this study, the micro random patterns were machined by diamond turning which used a controlled cutting tool path with random cutting depth. The machined patterns had random shape and directionality along the circumferential direction. The average width and length of machined random pattern according to rotation radius were 40.13㎛~55.51㎛ and 37.25㎛~59.49㎛, and these results were compared with the designed result. Also, the machining error according to rotation radius in diamond turning using randomly controlled cutting depth was discussed.
