  • This paper deals with the effects of various moisture environments on the structural behavior of concrete beams. The presented results were obtained within a large experimental program carried out at the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chauss$\acute{e}$es (LCPC), with Electricit$\acute{e}$ de France (EDF) as a partner. The aim of this paper is to point out and to quantify the strains resulting from unidirectional moisture conditions: a drying gradient applied during 14 months, followed by the re-wetting of the dried surface during 9 months. The effect of reinforcement on the shrinkage and on the deformation due to water absorption is pointed out. Moreover, a lot of tests on companion cylinders and prisms were carried out to determine the mechanical characteristics of the material and help checking analysis methods. The paper focuses on numerous measurements obtained during the 23 months on one plain concrete beam and one reinforced concrete beam: variation of water content, followed by precise weighing and gammadensitometry, relative humidity measurements, local and global deformations in the three directions and deflection of the beams. Thus, the effects of drying and water absorption on the behavior of concrete structures are documented and analyzed in comparison with existing representation of water diffusion.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of fiber type, compressional resilience and moisture transport properties of wool and polyester fiber on the heat transfer of insulation nonwovens. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Overall heat transfer of wool nonwoven was slightly higher than that of polyester nonwovens. Warmability of wool nonwoven was lower than that of polyester nonwovens. The radiative heat transfer was in the range of 11~18% of overall heat transfer in polyester nonwovens and 25% in wool nonwoven. 2) As wool nonwoven compressed, overall heat transfer was increased by increasing radiative heat transfer and wamability was decreased due to the poor compressional resilience. 3) Increasing rate of heat transfer by moisture absorption in wool nonwoven was lower than that of polyester nonwovens. Thickness and compressional resilience of wool nonwoven were reduced extremely by moisture absorption.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of heat treatment on the dynamic viscoelasticity of three species of Phyllostachys bambusoides, Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis and Phyllostachys pubescens, grown in southern Korea. The bamboo was treated for 3~24 hours at $60{\sim}180^{\circ}C$, and then was treated in a climatic chamber for 3~48 hours at $40^{\circ}C$ and 95% relative humidity. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Dynamic Young's modulus decreased with increasing temperature and duration of the heat treatment. 2. Internal friction decreased with increasing treatment duration. 3. Moisture absorption decreased with increasing temperature and duration of the heat treatment. 4. Dynamic viscoelasticity decreased, whereas internal friction slowly increased, with increasing moisture content.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the water environmental effect on the mechanical properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites. Moisture concentration absorbed in CFRP under various water environment was calculated and degradation of mechanical properties for each wet composite laminates is investigated by performing the flexual and tensile test. The results show that moisture absorption is accelerated in higher temperature environment and under the same temperature sea water environment prompts more absorption than fresh water. As increasing the water temperature and moisture concentration tensile and flexual strength decreased as much as 25%-40% compared with dry condition.

  • Recently, with a growing interest of health and environment, chitosan which was good in no harmful effect to human body and environment, has been watched as the finish treatment of hygiene and pleasantness. The purpose of this study is to develop multifunctional fabric that was improved antimicrobial activity and deodorization rate, water absorption, static voltage and dye absorption by treatment of nylon 6 grafted with acrylic acid added in chitosan. FT-IR spectra of the grafted with acrylic acid added in chitosan shows peaks of COOH and NH2. Antimicrobial activity and deodorization rate of chitosan and grafted with acrylic acid added in chitosan were increased greatly than the control, durability of laundry of grafted with acrylic acid added in chitosan was good. In case of chitosan was dyed acid dyes and grafted with acrylic acid added in chitosan was dyed basic dyes, dye absorption of them were increased than the control. Moisture regain, absorption time and tensile strength of grafted with acrylic acid added in chitosan was increased greatly than the control.

  • Dielectric strength of insulators made of epoxy composites rapidly decreases due to ageing to interfaces between the matric resin and filler particles. The adhesion variation of interfaces caused by moisture absorption also alters electrical properties that are the basic characteristics of insulators, particularly, in outdoor use. In this paper, electrical properties of epox/SiO$_2$composites were investigated at boiling absorption condition to observe the influences of moisture. In order to analyze the basic physical properties of samples, scanning electron microscopy and DC, AC and impulse voltage dielectric strength were measured. Also, the breakdown time of samples was measured under AC 6[kV] applied voltage, and the variation of lifetime was verified by using Weibull distribution function.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between water absorption (or hygroscopic property) and growth rate of rubra oak (Quercus rubra) from 5 different origins of seed (Carleton, Simcoe, Chatham, Bancroft, Unknown). Water absorption at cross section of Quercus rubra was $0.43{\sim}0.92g/cm^2$ and the property was not related with growth rate. Overall equilibrium moisture content of rubra oak were 11.35~11.56% and 15.15~15.83% at $40^{\circ}C$ with 75% and 90% relative humidities, respectively. There was no relationship between growth rate and moisture content(hygroscopy) in rubra oak. Based on the results, Rubra oak can be classified as a low hygroscopic wood grade, and thus might be a good raw material for furniture productions owing to its superior dimensional stability.

  • In this paper, through a series of comparative experiments, effects of two different cure processing methods, cocure and precure, on the mechanical properties of honeycomb core materials for aircraft applications are considered. Mass of moisture accumulated into the closed cells of the sandwich panel specimen from the measured mass of moisture diffused to the full saturation state into the elements(skin, adhesive layer, Nomex honeycomb), consisting the honeycomb sandwich specimen has been calculated. Water reservoir of 70$\^{C}$ was used to have specimens absorb moisture to see the influence of moisture absorbed into sandwich panel on its mechanical properties. For the repair condition holding for 2 hours at 177$\^{C}$(350℉) temperature, a pressure due to the vapor expansion in each cell of the sandwich panel, which may result in the local separation of the interface between laminated skin and the surface of the honeycomb, has been estimated by vapor pressure-temperature relation from the thermodynamic steam table and compared to the pressure from the ideal gas state equation. The bonding strengths of the laminated skins on the flat surface of the Nomex honeycomb have been compared by the flatwise tension test and climbing drum peel test performed at room temperature for dry, wet and wet-repair specimens, respectively.

  • Heat transfer equation is first reviewed and then governing equation of moisture diffusion. Analogy scheme is applied to analysis the moisture absorption problem of polymers. It make possible to numerically analyze the diffusion problem for single medium by using commercial finite element code if it is under the isothermal loading condition. It is extended to special multimaterial system by introducing pressure ratio function, whose moisture characteristics of materials are proportional to temperature only. The weight changes of silicon-nonconductive-polymer joint model due to moisture absorption is measured and been very close to the numerical results as for single media with boundary condition with zero concentration, but yields numerical errors as for multisystem media.
