  • As toughness-investigation to improve brittleness of existing epoxy resin, elastic-factor of elastic epoxy using TMA (Thermomechanical Analysis), DMTA (Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis) and FESEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microsope) for structure-images analysis were investigated. A range of measurement temperature of the TMA, DMTA was changed from -20[$^{\circ}C$] to 200[$^{\circ}C$]. When modifier was ratio of 0[phr], 20[phr], 35[phr], glass transition temperature (Tg) of elastic epoxy was measured through thermal analysis devices. Also, it was investigated thermal expansion coefficient ($\alpha$), modulus and loss factor through DMTA. In addition, it was analyzed structure through FSSEM and made sure elastic-factor of elastic epoxy visually. As thermal analysis results, 20[phr] was superior than 30[phr] thermally and mechanically. Specially, thermal expansion coefficient, modulus, damping properties were excellent. By structure-images analysis through FESEM, we found elastic-factor of elastic epoxy that is not existing epoxy, and proved high impact.

  • In this study, the feasible test for the mechanical property characterization of $BaTiO_3$ ceramics and multi-layer ceramic capacitor(MLCC) was performed with nanoindentation technique. In case of $BaTiO_3$ ceramics, hardness and elastic modulus are dependent on the densification of specimen showing the highest hardness and elastic modulus values of 12.3 GPa and 155 GPa, respectively at $1260^{\circ}C$. In case of MLCC chip, hardness of dielectric layer was lower than that of margin region. The nanoindentation method could be useful tool for the measurement of mechanical property within $BaTiO_3$ dielectric layer of very thin thickness in high capacitance MLCC.

  • Interfacial evaluation, damage sensing and cure monitoring of single carbon fiber/thermosetting composite with different curing processes was investigated using electro-micromechanical test. After curing, residual stress was monitored by measurement of electrical resistance (ER) and then it was compared to correlate with various curing processes. In thermal curing, curing shrinkage appeared significantly by matrix shrinkage and residual stress due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient (TEC). The change in electrical resistance (ΔR) on thermal curing was higher than that on ultraviolet (UV) curing. For thermal curing, apparent modulus was the highest and reaching time until same strain was faster. So far thermal curing shows strong durability on the IFSS after boiling test.

  • Silicone resin is recently used as encapsulant for high-power LED module due to its excellent thermal and optical properties. In the present investigation, finite element analysis of cure process was attempted to examine residual stress evolution behavior during silicone resin cure process which is composed of chemical curing and post-cooling. To model chemical curing of silicone, a cure kinetics equation was evaluated based on the measurement by differential scanning calorimeter. The evolutions of elastic modulus and chemical shrinkage during cure process were assumed as a function of the degree of cure to examine their effect on residual stress evolution. Finite element predictions showed how residual stress in cured silicone resin can be affected by elastic modulus and chemical shrinkage behavior. Finite element analysis is supposed to be utilized to select appropriate silicone resin or to design optimum cure process which brings about a minimum residual stress in encapsulant silicone resin.

  • This paper reports fabrication and characterization of cellulose Electro-Active Paper (EAPap) with increased thickness. Usual thickness of cellulose EAPap was $15{\mu}m$. This thickness needs to be increased to enhance the mechanical force output of EAPap. To fabricate thick cellulose EAPap, the fabrication process parameters including casting and drying processes should be investigated. In this paper, the casting thickness is increased from $800{\mu}m$ to $1500{\mu}m$, and heating times on a hot plate before and after curing process are introduced at 40 and $60^{\circ}C$ for 30 and 60 minutes, respectively. Thickness measurement, Thermal Gravitational Analysis (TGA), UV-transmittance, Young's modulus, and piezoelectric charge constant are measured. Heated EAPaps with increased thickness have similar TGA result, higher transmittance, higher Young's modulus and lower piezoelectric charge constant.

  • MRE(Magneto-rheological Elastomer) is a material which shows reversible and various modulus in magnetic field. Comparing to conventional rubber vibration isolator, MREs are able to absorb broader frequency range of vibration. These characteristic phenomena result from the orientation of magnetic particle (i.e., chain-like formation) in rubber matrix. In this study, NR was used as a matrix in order to manufacture MREs. Magnetic reactive powder(MRP), having rapid magnetic reaction, was selected as a magnetic particle to give magnetic field reactive modulus. The mechanical properties of manufactured MREs were measured without the application of magnetic field. The results showed that the tensile property and resilience were decreased while the hardness was increased with the addition of CIP. The analysis of MR effect was carried out by FFT analyzer with various magnetic flux. As the addition of MRP and magnetic flux increased, increment of MR effect was observed.

  • Viscoelastic components for vibration isolation or shock absorption in automobiles, machines and buildings are often subject to a high level of static deformation. From the dynamic design point of view, it is requisite to predict dynamic complex stiffness of viscoelastic components accurately and efficiently. To this end, a systematic procedure for complex modulus measurement of the viscoelastic material under large static deformation is often required in the industrial fields. In this paper, dynamic test conditions and procedures for the viscoelastic material under small oscillatory load superimposed on large static deformation are discussed. Various standard test methods are investigated in order to select an adequate test methodology. The influence of fixed boundary condition in the compression tests upon complex stiffness are investigated and an effective correction technique is proposed. Then the uniaxial tension and compression tests are performed and its results are compared with analysis results from conventional constitutive models.

  • Background: Residual stress always exists on any kind of welded area. This residual stress can cause the welded material to crack or fracture. For many years, the hole-drilling method has been widely used for measuring residual stress. However, this method is destructive. Nowadays, electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) can be used to measure residual stress with or without the hole-drilling method. ESPI is an optical nondestructive testing methods that use the speckle effect. Mechanical properties can be measured by calculation of the phase difference by the variation of temperature, pressure, or loading force. Methods: In this paper, the residual stress on the butt-welded area is measured by using ESPI with a suggested numerical calculation. Two types of specimens are prepared. Type I is made of pure base metal part and type II has a welded part at the center. These specimens are tensile tested with a material test system. At the same time, the ESPI system was applied to this test. Results: From the results of ESPI, the elastic modulus and the residual stress around the welded area can be calculated and estimated. Conclusion: With this result, it is confirmed that the residual stress on the welded area can be measured with high precision by ESPI.

  • Changes in viscosity and dynamic theological properties of Job's-tears were measured by Bohlin dynamic tester as a function of moisture, and measurement was performed within a linear viscoelastic range. The result of the shear stress vs shear rate of Job's-tears at different moisture contents $(50{\sim}75%)$ was applied to mathematical models and Herschel-Bulkley model showed the highest correlation coefficient. Lower moisture content (55%) produced higher yield stress and consistency index, but lower flow behavior index, whereas higher moisture content showed reverse effects. Job's-tears with $50{\sim}70%$ moisture contents showed a higher storage modulus (G') than loss modulus (G') at all frequencies, showing a higher concentrated polymer characteristics. However, higher moisture content (>75%) showed crossover point between G' and G', and frequency dependency. As the moisture content was increased, the amount of viscoelastic properties such as G', G', complex viscosity decreased during heating, and initial temperature and miximum value of viscoelastic properties shifted to higher temperatures, representing the moisture-dependence of Job's-tears upon theological properties.

  • The linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/zeolite composite using novel inorganic filler, zeolite, is prepared by a conventional compounding procedure using a twin-screw extruder. The observed scanning electron microscopic (SEM) morphology shows a good dispersion and adhesion of zeolite in the LLDPE matrix. The mechanical properties in terms of the Young's modulus, the yield stress, the impact strength, and the elongation at break were enhanced with a successive increment of zeolite content up to 40 wt%. The X-ray diffraction measurement is of supportive for the improved mechanical properties and the complex melt viscosity is as well. Upon applying a certain level of strain on the composites, the dewetting, the air hole formation and its growth are characterized. The dewetting originates around the filler particles at low strain and induces elliptical micropores upon further stretching. The microporosity such as the aspect ratio, the number and the total area of the air holes is also characterized. Thus, the composites loaded 40 % zeolite and 300 % elongation may be applicable for breathable microporous films with improved modulus, impact and yield stress, elongation at break, microporosity and air hole properties.
