Recognition of numeral fields is a very important task for many document automation applications. Conventional methods are based on the two-steps process, segmentation of touching numerals and recognition of the individual numerals. However, due to a large variation of touching types this approach has not produced a robust result. In this paper, we present a new segmentation-free method for recognizing the two touching numerals. In this approach, two touching numerals are regarded as a single pattern coming from 100 classes ('00', '01', '02', ..., '98', '99'). For the test set, we manually extract two touching numerals from the data set of NIST numeral fields. Due to the limitation of conventional neural network in case of large-set classification, we use a modular neural network and Drove its superiority through recognition experimen.

Hangul is regarded as one of the difficult character set due to the large number of classes and the shape similarity among different characters. Most of the conventional researches attempted to recognize the 2,350 characters which are popularly used, but this approach has a problem or low recognition performance while it provides a generality. On the contrary, recognition of a small character set appearing in specific fields like postal address or bank checks is more practical approach. This paper describes a research for recognizing the handwritten Hangul characters appearing in monetary fields. The modular neural network is adopted for the classification and three kinds of feature are tested. The experiment performed using standard Hangul database PE92 showed the correct recognition rate 91.56%.
One of the hardest problems in implementation of digital neural network are extension of synapses and programmability for relocating neurons. This paper Proposes a new hardware structure to solve these problems. The proposed structure can reconfigure network connections without alteration of basic design, and extend number of synapses attached to one neuron. Also, it is possible to extend the number of neurons and layers by connecting many MPUs(Modular Processing Unit). Generality and extensibility are verified by composing various kinds of Perceptorn and Kohonen networks using the architecture proposed in this paper and the verification performances compares well with HDL simulation results as well as the results of C modelling.

Theoretically, a multi-layered feedforward network has been known to be able to approximate a continuous function to an arbitrary degree of accuracy. However, these networks fail to approximate discontinuous functions when they are trained by well-known training algorithms. This paper presents a training algorithm which doesn't work consists of one or more modules, which are trained in a sequential order within subspaces of the input space, and is trained very rapidely once all modules are trained and merged. The experimantal results of applying this method indicates the proposed training algorithm is superior to traditional ones such as baskpagation.
This study investigates the application of supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) direct-cycle micro modular reactors (MMRs) in primary frequency control (PFC), which is a scenario characterized by significant load fluctuations that has received less attention compared to secondary load-following. Using a modified GAMMA + code and a deep neural network-based turbomachinery off-design model, the authors conducted an analysis to assess the behavior of the reactor core and fluid system under different PFC scenarios. The results indicate that the acceptable range for sudden relative electricity output (REO) fluctuations is approximately 20%p which aligns with the performance of combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGTs) and open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs). In S-CO2 direct-cycle MMRs, the control of the core operates passively within the operational range by managing coolant density through inventory control. However, when PFC exceeds 35%p, system control failure is observed, suggesting the need for improved control strategies. These findings affirm the potential of S-CO2 direct-cycle MMRs in PFC operations, representing an advancement in the management of grid fluctuations while ensuring reliable and carbon-free power generation.

This paper presents a study on the off-line handwritten Hangul (Korean) character recognition using the partially connected neural network (PCNN), which is based on partial connections between the input receptive fields and the hidden nodes. The hidden nodes of three PCNNs have ten receptive fields and different input feature sets. And we introduce modular partially connected neural network (MPCNN), The MPCNN combines three PCNNs with a merging network. The learning scheme of the proposed networks is composed of two steps: PCNN learning step and the merging step of combining three PCNN s. In the merging step, another merging PCNN network is introduced and trained by regarding the hidden output of each PCNN as a new input feature vector. The performance of the proposed classifier is verified on the recognition of 18 off-line handwritten Hangul characters widely used in business cards in Korea.

To provide tile information ell severe accident progression is very important for advanced or new type of nuclear power plant (NPP) design. A parametric study, therefore was performed to investigate the effect of thermal hydraulic design parameters ell severe accident progression of pressurized water reactors (PWRs), Nine parameters, which are considered important in NPP design or severe accident progression, were selected among the various thermal hydraulic design parameters. The backpropagation neural network (BPN) was used to determine parameters, which might more strongly affect the severe accident progression, among mile parameters. For training. different input patterns were generated by the latin hypercube sampling (LHS) technique and then different target patterns that contain core uncovery time and vessel failure time were obtained for Young Gwang Nuclear (YGN) Units 3&4 using modular accident analysis program (MAAP) 3.0B code. Three different severe accident scenarios, such as two loss of coolant accidents (LOCAs) and station blackout(SBO), were considered in this analysis. Results indicated that design parameters related to refueling water storage tank (RWST), accumulator and steam generator (S/G) have more dominant effects on the progression of severe accidents investigated, compared to tile other six parameters.
