Large plumes of yellow send or yellow dust blow out over the Sea of Japan and the Japanese archipelago from mainland of China. In this study, the methodology to capture the perspective on the large Yellow dust storm by using MODIS data is discussed. As the typical image of yellow send, MODIS data obtained of April 8, 2002 were used in this study.
Forest covers 30% of the Earth's land area and plays an important role in global carbon flux through its ability to store much greater amounts of carbon than other terrestrial ecosystems. The Gross Primary Production (GPP) represents the productivity of forest ecosystems according to climate change and its effect on the phenology, health, and carbon cycle. In this study, we estimated the daily GPP for a forest ecosystem using remote-sensed data from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and machine learning algorithms Support Vector Machine (SVM). MODIS products were employed to train the SVM model from 75% to 80% data of the total study period and validated using eddy covariance measurement (EC) data at the six flux tower sites. We also compare the GPP derived from EC and MODIS (MYD17). The MODIS products made use of two data sets: one for Processed MODIS that included calculated by combined products (e.g., Vapor Pressure Deficit), another one for Unprocessed MODIS that used MODIS products without any combined calculation. Statistical analyses, including Pearson correlation coefficient (R), mean squared error (MSE), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used to evaluate the outcomes of the model. In general, the SVM model trained by the Unprocessed MODIS (R = 0.77 - 0.94, p < 0.001) derived from the multi-sites outperformed those trained at a single-site (R = 0.75 - 0.95, p < 0.001). These results show better performance trained by the data including various events and suggest the possibility of using remote-sensed data without complex processes to estimate GPP such as non-stationary ecological processes.
Garlic and onion are grown in major cultivation regions that depend on the crop condition and the meteorology of the production area. Therefore, when yields are to be predicted, it is reasonable to use a statistical model in which both the crop and the meteorological elements are considered. In this paper, using a multiple linear regression model, we predicted garlic and onion yields in major cultivation regions. We used the MODIS NDVI that reflects the crop conditions, and six meteorological elements for 7 major cultivation regions from 2006 to 2015. The multiple linear regression models were suggested by using stepwise regression in the extraction of independent variables. As a result, the MODIS NDVI in February was chosen the significant independent variable of the garlic and onion yield prediction model. In the case of meteorological elements, the garlic yield prediction model were the mean temperature (March), the rainfall (November, March), the relative humidity (April), and the duration time of sunshine (April, May). Also, the rainfall (November), the duration time of sunshine (January), the relative humidity (April), and the minimum temperature (June) were chosen among the variables as the significant meteorological elements of the onion yield prediction model. MODIS NDVI and meteorological elements in the model explain 84.4%, 75.9% of the garlic and onion with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 42.57 kg/10a, 340.29 kg/10a. These lead to the result that the characteristics of variations in garlic and onion growth according to MODIS NDVI and other meteorological elements were well reflected in the model.
The aerosol retrieval algorithm for the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) measurements was updated recently. This paper reports on the comparison and validation of two latest versions (Collection 4 and 5, shortly C004 and C005) of the MODIS aerosol product over northeast Asian region. The differences between the aerosol optical thickness (AOT) from the C004 and C005 retrieval algorithms and the correlation with ground based AERONET sunphotometer observations are investigated. Over the study region, spatially averaged annual mean AOT retrieved from C005 algorithm $(AOT_{C005})$ is about 0.035 AOT (5%) less than the C004 counterparts. The linear correlations between MODIS and AERONET AOT also are R=0.89 (slope=0.86) for the C004 and R=0.95 (slope=1.00) for the C005. Moreover, the magnitude of the mean error in $AOT_{C005}$, difference between MODIS AOT and AERONET AOT, is 40% less than that in $AOT_{C004}$.

Water stress and environmental drivers are important factors to explain the variance of gross primary production (GPP). Environmental drivers are used to generate GPP in Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) algorithm and process-based model. However, MODIS algorithm only consider the vapor pressure deficit (VPD) data while the process-based biogeochemical model also uses limited data to express water stress. We compared the relationship between environmental drivers and GPP from eddy covariance method, MODIS algorithm, and Community Land Model 4 (CLM 4) simulation in normal years and drought years. To consider water stress specifically, we used VPD and evaporative fraction (EF). We evaluated the effects from environmental drivers and EF towards GPP products using the structural equation modeling (SEM) in South Korea. We found that GPP products from MODIS algorithm and model simulation results were not restricted from VPD data if VPD was underestimated. We also found that in the cropland area, irrigation effects can relieve VPD effects to GPP. However, GPP products derived from MODIS and CLM 4 had limitation to explain the irrigation effects to GPP. Overall, these results will enhance the understanding of GPP products derived from MODIS and CLM 4.
This study was to analyze the change in albedo by level-2 land cover map for 20 years(2002-2021) using MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. Also, the difference from the MODIS data was analyzed using the 10-year (2012-2021) data of Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). For the albedo data of MODIS and VIIRS, daily albedo data, MCD43A3 and VNP43IA, of 500 m spatial resolution of sinusoidal tile grid produced by Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) model were prepared for the South Korea range. Reprojection was performed using the code written based on Python 3.9, and the nearest neighbor was applied as the resampling method. White sky albedo and black sky albedo of shortwave were used for analysis. As a result of 20-year albedo analysis using MODIS data, the albedo tends to rise in all land use. Compared to the 2000s (2002-2011), the average albedo of the 2010s (2012-2021) showed the most significant increase of 0.0027 in the forest area, followed by the grass increase of 0.0024. As a result of comparing the albedo of VIIRS and MODIS, it was found that the albedo of VIIRS was larger from 0.001 to 0.1, which was considered to be due to differences in the surface reflectivity according to the time of image capture and sensor characteristics.

Evapotranspiration (ET) is an important state variable while simulating daily streamflow in hydrological models. In the estimation of ET, for example, when using FAO Penman Monteith equation, the LAI (Leaf Area Index) value reflecting the conditions of vegetation generally affects considerably. Recently in evaluating the vegetation condition as a fixed quantity, the remotely sensed LAI from MODIS satellite data is available, and the time series values of spatial LAI coupled with land use classes are utilized for ET evaluation. Four years (2001-2004) of MODIS LAI was prepared for the evaluation of Penman Monteith ET in the continuous hydrological model, SLURP (Semi-distributed Land Use-based Runoff Processes). The model was applied for simulating the dam inflow of Chungju watershed ($6661.3km^2$) located in the upstream of Han river basin. For four years (2001-2004) dam inflow data and meteorological data, the model was calibrated and verified using MODIS LAI data. The average Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency was 0.66. The 4 years watershed average Penman Monteith ETs of deciduous, coniferous, and mixed forest were 639.1, 422.4, and 631.6 mm for average MODIS LAI values of 3.64, 3.50, and 3.63 respectively.

The images of MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) that provide wider swath and shorter revisit frequency than Land Satellite (Landsat) and Satellite Pour I' Observation de la Terre (SPOT) has been used fer land cover classification with better spatial resolution than National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration/Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (NOAA/AVHRR)'s images. Due to the advantages of MODIS, several researches have conducted, however the results for the land cover classification using MODIS images have less accuracy of classification in small areas because of low spatial resolution. In this study, uncertainty of paddy fields classification using MODIS images was conducted in the region of Gyeonggi-do and the relation between this uncertainty of estimating paddy fields and topographical factors was also explained. The accuracy of classified paddy fields was compared with the land cover map of Environmental Geographic Information System (EGIS) in 2001 classified using Landsat images. Uncertainty of paddy fields classification was analyzed about the elevation and slope from the 30m resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) provided in EGIS. As a result of paddy classification, user's accuracy was about 41.5% and producer's accuracy was 57.6%. About 59% extracted paddy fields represented over 50 uncertainty in one hundred scale and about 18% extracted paddy fields showed 100 uncertainty. It is considered that several land covers mixed in a MODIS pixel influenced on extracted results and most classified paddy fields were distributed through elevation I, II and slope A region.

Satellites have been valuable tool for global/regional scale atmospheric environment monitoring as well as emission source detection. In this study, we present the results of application of satellite remote sensing data for air quality forecast in Seoul metropolitan area. AOT (Aerosol Optical Thickness) data from TERRA/MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectre-radiometer) satellite were compared to ground based $PM_{10}$ mass concentrations, and used to estimate the possibility of the aerosol forecasting in Seoul metropolitan area. Although correlation coefficient (${\sim}0.37$) between MODIS AOT products and surface $PM_{10}$ concentration data was relatively low, there was good correlation between MODIS AOT and surface PM concentration under certain atmospheric conditions, which supports the feasibility of using the high-resolution MODIS AOT for air quality forecasting. The MODIS AOT data with trajectory forecasts also can provide information on aerosol concentration trend. The success rate of the 24 hour aerosol concentration trend forecast result was about 75% in this study. Finally, application of satellite remote sensing data with ground-based air quality observations could provide promising results for air quality monitoring and more exact trend forecast methodology by high resolution satellite data and verification with long term measurement dataset.

In 2011, floods were at the worst stage of devastation in Chao Phraya river basin of Thailand. The purpose of this study is to trace the flood inundation area around Chao Phraya river basin by using Terra MODIS image because it has the ability of spatiotemporal dynamics. The MODIS indices, which included the enhanced vegetation index(EVI), land surface water index(LSWI), and the difference in the values of EVI and LSWI(DVEL), were extracted from MODIS product MOD09 8-day composite datasets with a spatial resolution of 500m from Jul. 29, 2011 to Jan. 09, 2012. We found that combined application of EVI, LSWI, and DVEL was suitable for monitoring flood inundation. For the extracted flood inundation area and water-related area. The result can be used to acquire the flood inundation data scattered and demonstrate the potential for the use of MODIS data for temporal and spatial detection of flood effects.
