  • Black carbon (BC), a kind of high surface area carbonaceous material (HSACM), was isolated from Andong lake sediment. Sorption and desorption kinetics of naphthalene (Naph) and phenanthrene (Phen) in organic carbon (OC) and BC in the Andong lake sediment were investigated. Several kinetic models such as one-site mass transfer model (OSMTM), two-compartment first-order kinetic model (TCFOKM), and a newly proposed modified two-compartment first-order kinetic model (MTCFOKM) were used to describe the sorption and desorption kinetics. The MTCFOKM was the best fitting model. The MTCFOKM for sorption kinetics showed that i) the sorbed amounts of PAHs onto BC were higher than those onto OC, consistent with BET surface area; ii) the equilibration time for sorption onto BC was longer than those onto OC due to smaller size of micropore ($11.67{\AA}$) of BC than OC ($38.18{\AA}$); iii) initial sorption velocity of BC was higher than OC; and iv) the slow sorption velocity in BC caused the later equilibrium time than OC even though the fast sorption velocity was early completed in both BC and OC. The MTCFOKM also described the desorption of PAHs from the OC and BC well. After desorption, the remaining fractions of PAHs in BC were higher than those in OC due to stronger PAHs-BC binding. The remaining fractions increased with aging for both BC and OC.

  • We carried out the standoff compensation data from 2007 to 2011 into four different density borehole models to find out the most effectiveness of standoff compensation charts. First, we investigated the irregular collapse characteristics of gamma ray and cut the non-ideal gamma response to improve the effectiveness of the standoff compensation error data. Effectiveness of detector combinations, density of borehole, and spine and ribs techniques from the modified standoff compensation data was analyzed. As the result of comparison, LSD-MSD combination has been suitable for standoff compensation more than LSD-SSD combination and it is possible to do standoff compensation for soil or weathered zone under groundwater level without fatal errors. Even though error scales of density transformed spine and ribs techniques were generally large compared to the conventional standoff compensation, standoff compensation for soil and weathered zone under groundwater level were sufficiently effective.

  • The TOPMODEL Topographic Index (TI) is widely used to predict the spatial distribution of soil moisture contents, The TI is one of terrain indices which are frequently used in spatially distributed environmental modelings. There have been studies on the evaluation and improvement of the TI. Most of them. however, have focused on only the modified multiple flow direction algorithm and algorithms for slope calculation have been paid little attention, In this research, we attempted to improve the TI by utilizing the infinitive flow direction (Dinf) algorithm and Horn slope algorithm. Then we attempt to analyze and evaluate the influence of the improved TI on hydrological responses of the TOPMODEL As a result. our approaching using the infinitive flow direction (Dinf) and Horn slope algorithm made the TI better than the multiple flow direction (MD8) - the multiple descent slope (MDS) algorithm. However, the model efficiency of discharges at the outlet was not increased. Our research may provide an insight to choose appropriate algorithms for calculating flow direction and slope in spatially distributed environmental modelings.

  • Settlement of the piled raft can be estimated even after years of completing the construction of any structure over the foundation. This study is devoted to carry out numerical analysis by the finite element method of the consolidation settlement of piled rafts over clayey soils and detecting the dissipation of excess pore water pressure and its effect on bearing capacity of piled raft foundations. The ABAQUS computer program is used as a finite element tool and the soil is represented by the modified Drucker-Prager/cap model. Five different configurations of pile groups are simulated in the finite element analysis. It was found that the settlement beneath the piled raft foundation resulted from the dissipation of excess pore water pressure considerably affects the final settlement of the foundation, and enough attention should be paid to settlement variation with time. The settlement behavior of unpiled raft shows bowl shaped settlement profile with maximum at the center. The degree of curvature of the raft under vertical load increases with the decrease of the raft thickness. For the same vertical load, the differential settlement of raft of ($10{\times}10m$) size decreases by more than 90% when the raft thickness increased from 0.75 m to 1.5 m. The average load carried by piles depends on the number of piles in the group. The groups of ($2{\times}1$, $3{\times}1$, $2{\times}2$, $3{\times}2$, and $3{\times}3$) piles were found to carry about 24%, 32%, 42%, 58%, and 79% of the total vertical load. The distribution of load between piles becomes more uniform with the increase of raft thickness.

  • The present study introduces a novel numerical approach for solving dispersion dominated problems with Cauchy boundary condition in an Eulerian-Lagrangian scheme. The study reveals the incapability of traditional Neuman approach to address the dispersion dominated problems with Cauchy boundary condition, even though it can produce reliable solution in the advection dominated regime. Also, the proposed numerical approach is applied to a real field problem of radioactive contaminant migration from radioactive waste repository which is a major current waste management issue. The performance of the proposed numerical approach is evaluated by comparing the results with numerical solutions of traditional FDM (Finite Difference Method), Neuman approach, and the analytical solution. The results show that the proposed numerical approach yields better and reliable solution for dispersion dominated regime, specifically for Peclet Numbers of less than 0.1. The proposed numerical approach is validated by applying to a real field problem of radioactive contaminant migration from radioactive waste repository of varying Peclet Number from 0.003 to 34.5. The numerical results of Neuman approach overestimates the concentration value with an order of 100 than the proposed approach during the assessment of radioactive contaminant transport from nuclear waste repository. The overestimation of concentration value could be due to the assumption that dispersion is negligible. Also our application problem confirms the existence of real field situation with advection dominated condition and dispersion dominated condition simultaneously as well as the significance or advantage of the proposed approach in the real field problem.

  • Nine chemolithoautotrophic and 12 chemolithoheterotrophic sulfur oxidizing bacteria were isolated using enrichment technique in modified Starkey's medium. All isolates reduced pH of the growth medium through oxidation of elementai sulfur to sulfuric acid. Isolates utilized the thiosulfate as energy source except LCH. None of the isolates grew anaerobically and utilization of glucose was found only in chemolithoheterotrophic isolates SGA6 and JIG. In vitro sulfate production from elemental sulfur was found maximum for chemoiithoautotroph LCH ($43.2mg\;100\;mL^{-1}$) and least for chemolithoheterotroph JIG ($10.04mg\;100\;mL^{-1}$). The above tests suggested that all isolates belong to the member of Thiobacillus. For field inoculation of Thiobacillus, clay based pellet formulation was developed with the cell load of $2.5{\times}10^7cfu\;g^{-1}$ of pellet. It is easy to handle by the farmers and more likely to lead to successful farming.

첫 번째로 MODIS의 LST(Land Surface Temperature), NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), 선행강우 및 무강우 누적일수를 이용해 1 km 공간 토양수분을 산정하였다.

  • In the present paper, a numerical study was carried out for a reasonable and realistic evaluation of tension loads in piles during deep excavation in Singapore soft soil applying pile-plugged jet grouted slab. Based on 2-dimensional finite element analyses using linear elastic-perfectly plastic soil model obeying Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, effects of pile-plugged jet grouted slab on the stability during excavation were examined, and a parametric study was also conducted to investigate critical influencing parameters in the estimation of reliable pile tension loads. Finally, based on the Modified Cam-Clay model, pile tension loads were estimated by considering on-going consolidation state of the Singapore clay deposit and the range of critical parameters observed during laboratory tests.

  • In Korea, driven piles are generally penetrated up to weathered rock or harder strata. Friction piles have been used to some extent in the southwest coastal area with deep soils; however, friction piles are not extensively due to uncertainties about construction quality. The embedded pile construction method is primarily used due to noise and vibration complaints. However, in Southeast Asian countries (e.g., Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam), where soft sediments are deep, the driven pile method is commonly used due to its economic advantages. Construction companies are increasingly entering overseas construction markets, e.g., Southeast Asia; thus, it is necessary to understand the behavior of driven friction piles in the soil and improve on-site engineering management to gain market competitiveness in these countries. In this study, the bearing capacity of friction piles driven into clayey coastal soils in Vietnam with time-dependent characteristics was evaluated based on the dynamic and static pile load tests. Based on the results, a modified Danish formula is proposed for on-site quality management.

  • Current design methods for reinforced earth structures take no account of the magnitude of the strains induced in the tensile members as these are invariably manufactured from high modulus materials, such as steel, where straits are unlikely to be significant. With fabrics, however, large strains may frequently be induced and it is important to determine these to enable the stability of the structure to be assessed. In the present paper internal design method of analysis relating to the use of fabric reinforcements in reinforced earth structures for both stress and strain considerations is presented. For the internal stability analysis against rupture and pullout of the fabric reinforcements, a strain compatibility analysis procedure that considers the effects of reinforcement stiffness, relative movement between the soil and reinforcements, and compaction-induced stresses as studied by Ehrlich 8l Mitchell is used. I Bowever, the soil-reinforcement interaction is modeled by relating nonlinear elastic soil behavior to nonlinear response of the reinforcement. The soil constitutive model used is a modified vertsion of the hyperbolic soil model and compaction stress model proposed by Duncan et at., and iterative step-loading approach is used to take nonlinear soil behavior into consideration. The effects of seepage pressures are also dealt with in the proposed method of analy For purposes of assessing the strain behavior oi the fabric reinforcements, nonlinear model of hyperbolic form describing the load-extension relation of fabrics is employed. A procedure for specifying the strength characteristics of paraweb polyester fibre multicord, needle punched non-woven geotHxtile and knitted polyester geogrid is also described which may provide a more convenient procedure for incorporating the fablic properties into the prediction of fabric deformations. An attempt to define improvement in bond-linkage at the interconnecting nodes of the fabric reinforced earth stracture due to the confining stress is further made. The proposed method of analysis has been applied to estimate the maximum tensions, deformations and strains of the fabric reinforcements. The results are then compared with those of finite element analysis and experimental tests, and show in general good agreements indicating the effectiveness of the proposed method of analysis. Analytical parametric studies are also carried out to investigate the effects of relative soil-fabric reinforcement stiffness, locked-in stresses, compaction load and seepage pressures on the magnitude and variation of the fabric deformations.
