The relationship between the diffusivity and electrochemical characteristics of lithium secondary battery with the modified Si anode material prepared in HF/$AgNO_3$ solution was investigated. The crystallographic structure and images of the modified porous Si and modified Si/Cu was examined using the X-ray diffraction, BET and SEM. To examine the effect of metal composite and pore size distribution according to chemical etching on the electrochemical characterization, the electrodes for half cells were prepared with the modified Si, modified Si/Cu, and modified Si/Cu annealed with $600^{\circ}C$. Our results showed that the chemical diffusivity of lithium ions was related to structure and resistance of Si/Cu composite anode material. The lithium diffusivity in modified silicon compound calculated from the CV was at the range of $1{\times}10^{-12}$ to $9{\times}10^{-16}cm^2/s$. The effects of modified silicon structure and resistance on the cycling efficiency were significant.
The presence of a porous Si layer(PSL) formed on the surface of crystalline silicon by electrochemical etclling in HF solution is found to enhance the stability of n-Si photoanodes, but porous n-Si thus formed is still liable to corrode upon exposure to excitation light. To improve the stability of the porous n-Si electrodes and to reduce the photo-induced corrosion, we have examined the PEC behavior of porous n-Si modified with polyaniline(PANI) and 3 nm thick layer of Au. Comparisons were made between Au/PSL and PANl/Au/PSL photoelectrodes.
Porous 3C-SiC(pSiC) samples with different pore diameters were prepared from poly crystalline N-type 3C-SiC by electrochemical anodization. The pSiC surface was chemically modified by the sputtering of Pd and Pt nano-particles as a hydrogen catalyst. Changes in resistance were monitored with hydrogen concentrations in the range of 110 ppm - 410 ppm. The variations of the electrical resistance in the presence of hydrogen demonstrated that Pd and Pt-deposited pSiC samples have the ability to detect hydrogen at room temperature. Regardless of the catalyst, the 25 nm pore diameter samples showed good response and recovery properties. However, the 60 nm samples showed unstable and slow response. It was found that the pore size affects the catalyst reaction and consequently, results in changes of the sensitivity to hydrogen.

Porous ceramics with tailored pore size and shape are promising materials for the realization of a number of functional and structural properties. A novel method has been reported for the investigation of the role of SiC in the formation of $SiO_2$ foams by colloidal wet processing. Within a suitable pH range of 9.9 ~ 10.5 $SiO_2$, particles were partially hydrophobized using hexylamine as an amphiphile. Different mole ratios of the SiC solution were added to the surface modified $SiO_2$ suspension. The contact angle was found to be around $73^{\circ}$, with an adsorption free energy $6.8{\times}10^{-12}J$. The Laplace pressure of about 1.25 ~ 1.6 mPa was found to correspond to a wet foam stability of about 80 ~ 85%. The mechanical and thermal properties were analyzed for the sintered ceramics, with the highest compressive load observed at the mole ratio of 1:1.75. Hertzian indentations are used to evaluate the damage behavior under constrained loading conditions of $SiO_2$-SiC porous ceramics.
A simulation method to estimate microstructure dependent material properties and their influence on performance for a honeycomb structured SiC heating element has been established. Electrical and thermal conductivities of a porous SiC sample were calculated by solving a current continuity equation. Then, the results were used as input parameters for a finite element analysis package to predict temperature distribution when the heating element was subjected to a DC bias. Based on the simulation results, a direction of material development for better heating efficiency was found. In addition, a modified metal electrode scheme to decelerate corrosion kinetics was proposed, by which the durability of the water heating system was greatly improved.
A porous stainless steel (SUS) as a substrate of silica composite membranes for hydrogen purification was used to improve mechanical strength of the membranes for industrial application. The SUS support was successfully modified by using submicron Ni powder, $SiO_2$ sols with particle size of 500 nm and 150 nm in turns. Silica top layer was coated on the modified supports under various preparation conditions such as calcination temperature, dipping time and repeating number of dipping-drying process. The calcination temperature for proper sintering was between H ttig temperature and Tamman temperature of the coating materials. Maximum hydrogen selectivity was investigated by changing dipping time. As repeating number of dipping-drying process increased, permeances of nitrogen and hydrogen were decreased and $H_2/N_2$ selectivity was increased due to the reduction of non-selective pinholes and mesopores. For the silica membrane prepared under optimized conditions, permeance of hydrogen was about $3\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;cm^3{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}{\cdot}cmHg^{-1}$ combined with $H_2/N_2$ seletivity of about 20.
Silica/SUS composite membranes were prepared for CO removal from products of methanol steam reforming. A support was prepared by coating Ni powder of sub-micron and SiO$_2$ sols of particle size of 500nm and 150nm in turns on a porous stainless steel (SUS) substrate. Silica top layer was coated on the modified support using colloidal sol with nanoparticle. As a result of mixture gas permeation test of silica composite membrane using H$_2$(99%)/CO(1%), CO concentration of 10000 ppm was reduced to under 81 ppm, which is acceptable in PEMFC anode gas specification. Permeation mechanism through the membrane was mainly molecular sieving.
In order to reduce signal delay in ULSI, an intermetal material of low dielectric constant is required. Ordered mesoporous silica film is proper to intermetal dielectric due to its low dielectric constant and superior mechanical properties. The ordered mesoporous silica film prepared by TEOS (tetraethoxysilane) / MTES (methyltriethoxysilane) mixed silica precursor and Brij-76 surfactant was surface-modified by HMDS (hexamethyldisilazane) treatment to reduce its dielectric constant. HMDS can substitute $-Si(CH_3)_3$ groups for -OH groups on the surface of silica wall. In order to modify interior silica wall, HMDS was treated by two different processes except the conventional spin coating. One process is that film is dipped and stirred in HMDS/n-hexane solution, and the other process is that film is exposed to evaporated HMDS. Through the investigation with different HMDS treatment, it was concluded that surface modification in evaporated HMDS was more effective to modify interior silica wall of nano-sized pores.
