In modern society the image processing has been applied to various digital devices such as smartphone, digital camera, and digital TV. In the field of image processing the edge detection is one of the important parts in the image processing procedure. The image edge means point that the pixel value is changed between background and object rapidly, and includes the important information such as magnitude, location, and orientation. The performance of the existing edge detection method is insufficient for the image degraded by AWGN(additive white Gaussian noise) because it detects edges by using small weighted masks. Therefore, in this paper, to detect edge in AWGN environment effectively, we proposed an algorithm that detects edge as calculated gradient of sorting vector which is transformed by estimated mask from new pixel according to each region.

As interest in green growth picks up, the importance of bicycles which are an environment friendly means of communication has been magnified. However, bicycle routes which are the base of bicycles are designed without considering topographic elements and thus many users are experiencing inconvenience in using bicycles. The present study presents a routing technique to select optimal routes when selecting routes in commuting to school utilizing bicycles. To this end, a formula for optimum route calculation considering slope and intersections was drawn and a method to select optimum routes by applying modified Dijkstra Algorithms was studied. According to the results, the bicycle routes for commuting to school should be selected by the shortest time rather than the shortest distances to the destination, because it required reach the destination faster. Therefore when selecting the routes, it must be based on the shortest time considering waiting time due to crosswalks or crossroads and speed variations due to slopes.

This paper presents the design and FPGA implementation of a FLEX PSP(Protocol Signal Processor) for the portable high speed paging system. In this approach, two algorithms are newly proposed for implementing the PSP which provides capabilities of the maximum 6,400bps at speed, high-channel throughput, real time error correction and an effective frame search function. One is an accurate symbol synchronization algorithm which is applied for synchronizing the interleaved 4-level bit symbols which are received at input stage of A/D converter, and the other is a modified fast decoding algorithm which is provided for realizing double error correction of (31,21)BCH signal. The PSP is composed of six functional modules, and each module is modelled in VHDL(VHSIC Hardware Description Language). Both functional simulation and logic synthesis have performed for the proposed PSP through the use of Synopsys$^{TM}$ tools on a Axil-320 Workstation, and where Altera 10K libraries are used for logic synthesis. From logic synthesis, we can see that the number of gates is about 2,631. For FPGA implementation, timing simulation is performed by using Altera MAX+ PLUS II, and its results will be also given. The PSP which is implemented in 6 FPGA devices on a PCB has been verified by means of Logic Analyzer.r.

In this study, we propose a robust face recognition system to pose variations based on automatic pose estimation. Radial basis function neural network is applied as one of the functional components of the overall face recognition system. The proposed system consists of preprocessing and recognition modules to provide a solution to pose variation and high-dimensional pattern recognition problems. In the preprocessing part, principal component analysis (PCA) and 2-dimensional 2-directional PCA ($(2D)^2$ PCA) are applied. These functional modules are useful in reducing dimensionality of the feature space. The proposed RBFNNs architecture consists of three functional modules such as condition, conclusion and inference phase realized in terms of fuzzy "if-then" rules. In the condition phase of fuzzy rules, the input space is partitioned with the use of fuzzy clustering realized by the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) algorithm. In conclusion phase of rules, the connections (weights) are realized through four types of polynomials such as constant, linear, quadratic and modified quadratic. The coefficients of the RBFNNs model are obtained by fuzzy inference method constituting the inference phase of fuzzy rules. The essential design parameters (such as the number of nodes, and fuzzification coefficient) of the networks are optimized with the aid of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Experimental results completed on standard face database -Honda/UCSD, Cambridge Head pose, and IC&CI databases demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of face recognition system compared with other studies.

With the development of Information Technology in recent years, the image has been an important means to store or express information. Generally, during the process of acquiring and storing images, the images can be corrupted by noise of which typical types are Impulse(Impulse Noise) and AWGN(Addiction White Gaussian Noise). Impulse noise shows irregularly in black and white over the length and breadth of the image by sharp and sudden disturbance of the image signal. In the Impulse noise environment, SM(Standard Median) filter would be used because of its good noise removal performance and simple algorithm. However, when SM filter removes noise, it also produces error at the edge of image and causes whole image quality deterioration. In this paper, we propose a method based on modified nonlinear filter operation scheme which enhances the features of noise removal and detail image preservation when restoring image in Impulse noise environment. And, we compared it with existing methods and the performances through simulation.

In an effort to improve the efficiency of the speech recognition, we investigate the effect of the number of phoneme clusters. For this purpose, codebooks of varied number of phoneme clusters are prepared by modified k-means clustering algorithm. The subsequent processing is fuzzy vector quantization (FVQ) and hidden Markov model (HMM) for speech recognition test. The result shows that there are two distinct regimes. For large number of phoneme clusters, the recognition performance is roughly independent of it. For small number of phoneme clusters, however, the recognition error rate increases nonlinearly as it is decreased. From numerical calculation, it is found that this nonlinear regime might be modeled by a power law function. The result also shows that about 166 phoneme clusters would be the optimal number for recognition of 300 isolated words. This amounts to roughly 3 variations per phoneme.
This study proposes a novel recommender system using the structural hole analysis to reflect qualitative and emotional information in recommendation process. Although collaborative filtering (CF) is known as the most popular recommendation algorithm, it has some limitations including scalability and sparsity problems. The scalability problem arises when the volume of users and items become quite large. It means that CF cannot scale up due to large computation time for finding neighbors from the user-item matrix as the number of users and items increases in real-world e-commerce sites. Sparsity is a common problem of most recommender systems due to the fact that users generally evaluate only a small portion of the whole items. In addition, the cold-start problem is the special case of the sparsity problem when users or items newly added to the system with no ratings at all. When the user's preference evaluation data is sparse, two users or items are unlikely to have common ratings, and finally, CF will predict ratings using a very limited number of similar users. Moreover, it may produces biased recommendations because similarity weights may be estimated using only a small portion of rating data. In this study, we suggest a novel limitation of the conventional CF. The limitation is that CF does not consider qualitative and emotional information about users in the recommendation process because it only utilizes user's preference scores of the user-item matrix. To address this novel limitation, this study proposes cluster-indexing CF model with the structural hole analysis for recommendations. In general, the structural hole means a location which connects two separate actors without any redundant connections in the network. The actor who occupies the structural hole can easily access to non-redundant, various and fresh information. Therefore, the actor who occupies the structural hole may be a important person in the focal network and he or she may be the representative person in the focal subgroup in the network. Thus, his or her characteristics may represent the general characteristics of the users in the focal subgroup. In this sense, we can distinguish friends and strangers of the focal user utilizing the structural hole analysis. This study uses the structural hole analysis to select structural holes in subgroups as an initial seeds for a cluster analysis. First, we gather data about users' preference ratings for items and their social network information. For gathering research data, we develop a data collection system. Then, we perform structural hole analysis and find structural holes of social network. Next, we use these structural holes as cluster centroids for the clustering algorithm. Finally, this study makes recommendations using CF within user's cluster, and compare the recommendation performances of comparative models. For implementing experiments of the proposed model, we composite the experimental results from two experiments. The first experiment is the structural hole analysis. For the first one, this study employs a software package for the analysis of social network data - UCINET version 6. The second one is for performing modified clustering, and CF using the result of the cluster analysis. We develop an experimental system using VBA (Visual Basic for Application) of Microsoft Excel 2007 for the second one. This study designs to analyzing clustering based on a novel similarity measure - Pearson correlation between user preference rating vectors for the modified clustering experiment. In addition, this study uses 'all-but-one' approach for the CF experiment. In order to validate the effectiveness of our proposed model, we apply three comparative types of CF models to the same dataset. The experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms the other comparative models. In especial, the proposed model significantly performs better than two comparative modes with the cluster analysis from the statistical significance test. However, the difference between the proposed model and the naive model does not have statistical significance.

This paper descWireless Sensor Network consisting of a number of small sensors with transceiver and data processor is an effective means for gathering data in a variety of environments. The data collected by each sensor is transmitted to a processing center that use all reported data to estimate characteristics of the environment or detect an event. This process must be designed to conserve the limited energy resources of the sensor since neighboring sensors generally have the data of similar information. Therefore, clustering scheme which sends aggregated information to the processing center may save energy. Existing multi-hop cluster energy consumption modeling scheme can not estimate exact energy consumption of an individual sensor. In this paper, we propose a new cluster energy consumption model which modified existing problem. We can estimate more accurate total energy consumption according to the number of clusterheads by using Voronoi tessellation. Thus, we can realize an energy efficient cluster formation. Our modeling has an accuracy over $90\%$ when compared with simulation and has considerably superior than existing modeling scheme about $60\%.$ We also confirmed that energy consumption of the proposed modeling scheme is more accurate when the sensor density is increased.
Omission of noun phrases for obligatory cases is a common phenomenon in sentences of Korean and Japanese, which is not observed in English. When an argument of a predicate can be filled with a noun phrase co-referential with the title, the argument is more easily omitted in Encyclopedia texts. The omitted noun phrase is called a zero anaphor or zero pronoun. Encyclopedias like Wikipedia are major source for information extraction by intelligent application systems such as information retrieval and question answering systems. However, omission of noun phrases makes the quality of information extraction poor. This paper deals with the problem of developing a system that can restore omitted noun phrases in encyclopedia documents. The problem that our system deals with is almost similar to zero anaphora resolution which is one of the important problems in natural language processing. A noun phrase existing in the text that can be used for restoration is called an antecedent. An antecedent must be co-referential with the zero anaphor. While the candidates for the antecedent are only noun phrases in the same text in case of zero anaphora resolution, the title is also a candidate in our problem. In our system, the first stage is in charge of detecting the zero anaphor. In the second stage, antecedent search is carried out by considering the candidates. If antecedent search fails, an attempt made, in the third stage, to use the title as the antecedent. The main characteristic of our system is to make use of a structural SVM for finding the antecedent. The noun phrases in the text that appear before the position of zero anaphor comprise the search space. The main technique used in the methods proposed in previous research works is to perform binary classification for all the noun phrases in the search space. The noun phrase classified to be an antecedent with highest confidence is selected as the antecedent. However, we propose in this paper that antecedent search is viewed as the problem of assigning the antecedent indicator labels to a sequence of noun phrases. In other words, sequence labeling is employed in antecedent search in the text. We are the first to suggest this idea. To perform sequence labeling, we suggest to use a structural SVM which receives a sequence of noun phrases as input and returns the sequence of labels as output. An output label takes one of two values: one indicating that the corresponding noun phrase is the antecedent and the other indicating that it is not. The structural SVM we used is based on the modified Pegasos algorithm which exploits a subgradient descent methodology used for optimization problems. To train and test our system we selected a set of Wikipedia texts and constructed the annotated corpus in which gold-standard answers are provided such as zero anaphors and their possible antecedents. Training examples are prepared using the annotated corpus and used to train the SVMs and test the system. For zero anaphor detection, sentences are parsed by a syntactic analyzer and subject or object cases omitted are identified. Thus performance of our system is dependent on that of the syntactic analyzer, which is a limitation of our system. When an antecedent is not found in the text, our system tries to use the title to restore the zero anaphor. This is based on binary classification using the regular SVM. The experiment showed that our system's performance is F1 = 68.58%. This means that state-of-the-art system can be developed with our technique. It is expected that future work that enables the system to utilize semantic information can lead to a significant performance improvement.
Fama asserted that in an efficient market, we can't make a trading rule that consistently outperforms the average stock market returns. This study aims to suggest a machine learning algorithm to improve the trading performance of an intraday short volatility strategy applying asymmetric volatility spillover effect, and analyze its trading performance improvement. Generally stock market volatility has a negative relation with stock market return and the Korean stock market volatility is influenced by the US stock market volatility. This volatility spillover effect is asymmetric. The asymmetric volatility spillover effect refers to the phenomenon that the US stock market volatility up and down differently influence the next day's volatility of the Korean stock market. We collected the S&P 500 index, VIX, KOSPI 200 index, and V-KOSPI 200 from 2008 to 2018. We found the negative relation between the S&P 500 and VIX, and the KOSPI 200 and V-KOSPI 200. We also documented the strong volatility spillover effect from the VIX to the V-KOSPI 200. Interestingly, the asymmetric volatility spillover was also found. Whereas the VIX up is fully reflected in the opening volatility of the V-KOSPI 200, the VIX down influences partially in the opening volatility and its influence lasts to the Korean market close. If the stock market is efficient, there is no reason why there exists the asymmetric volatility spillover effect. It is a counter example of the efficient market hypothesis. To utilize this type of anomalous volatility spillover pattern, we analyzed the intraday volatility selling strategy. This strategy sells short the Korean volatility market in the morning after the US stock market volatility closes down and takes no position in the volatility market after the VIX closes up. It produced profit every year between 2008 and 2018 and the percent profitable is 68%. The trading performance showed the higher average annual return of 129% relative to the benchmark average annual return of 33%. The maximum draw down, MDD, is -41%, which is lower than that of benchmark -101%. The Sharpe ratio 0.32 of SVS strategy is much greater than the Sharpe ratio 0.08 of the Benchmark strategy. The Sharpe ratio simultaneously considers return and risk and is calculated as return divided by risk. Therefore, high Sharpe ratio means high performance when comparing different strategies with different risk and return structure. Real world trading gives rise to the trading costs including brokerage cost and slippage cost. When the trading cost is considered, the performance difference between 76% and -10% average annual returns becomes clear. To improve the performance of the suggested volatility trading strategy, we used the well-known SVM algorithm. Input variables include the VIX close to close return at day t-1, the VIX open to close return at day t-1, the VK open return at day t, and output is the up and down classification of the VK open to close return at day t. The training period is from 2008 to 2014 and the testing period is from 2015 to 2018. The kernel functions are linear function, radial basis function, and polynomial function. We suggested the modified-short volatility strategy that sells the VK in the morning when the SVM output is Down and takes no position when the SVM output is Up. The trading performance was remarkably improved. The 5-year testing period trading results of the m-SVS strategy showed very high profit and low risk relative to the benchmark SVS strategy. The annual return of the m-SVS strategy is 123% and it is higher than that of SVS strategy. The risk factor, MDD, was also significantly improved from -41% to -29%.
