In this study, a modified indirect evaluation method was developed to predict the deterioration level of water pipes. The accuracy of the modified method was verified by comparing it with the direct method. The weights of index were adjusted by reducing the weight of water quality corrosion, soil corrosion, lay depth and road type according to the importance of the existing evaluation factors and adding the weight of pipe thickness. In the results, the weight of pipe thickness was determined to be 0.1530. Comparing with the direct evaluation method, the accuracy of the modified indirect evaluation method increased by 31.03% compared to the indirect evaluation method. The modified indirect evaluation method will be able to select relatively old pipes more accurately and efficiently than the existing indirect evaluation method when prioritizing the improvement of old water pipes.

Ultrasonic pulse velocity method is employed for evaluation of crack depth in concrete structures. Due to the heterogeneous nature of concrete and the indirect transmission arrangement for the transit time measurement through the surface-opening cracks in concrete structures, ultrasonic pulse velocity has so many variations as crack depths and transmission lengths vary. In this study, ultrasonic pulse velocity method is investigated to evaluate the surface-opening crack depth of concrete slabs, reinforced concrete slabs, reinforced concrete flexural members. the resent study gives a modified method for deminishing errors in transit time measurements and show limitations to the evaluation of crack depth in reinforced concrete structures.
A primary concern of national R&D plans is to encourage technological development in private firms and research institutes. For effective R&D planning and program support, it is necessary to assess technological impacts that may exist both directly and indirectly among technology areas within the whole technology system; however, previous studies analyze only direct impacts among technologies, failing to capture both direct and indirect impacts. Therefore, this study proposes an approach based on decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) to identifying specific characteristics of technology areas, such as technological impact and degree of cause or effect (DCE). The method employs patent co-classification analysis to construct a technological knowledge flow matrix. Next, to capture both direct and indirect effects among technology areas, it incorporates the modified DEMATEL process into patent analysis. The method helps analysts assess the technological impact and DCE of technology areas, and observe their evolving trajectories over time, thereby identifying relevant technological implications. This study presents a case study using Korean patents registered during 2003-2012. We expect our analysis results to be helpful input for R&D planning, as well as the suggested approach to be incorporated into processes for formulating national R&D plans.

In order to treat flow problems for an unsaturated soils, it is required the mediation of the coefficient of permeability with variation of suction. The coefficient of permeability for soils can be determined by the direct or indirect methods. The direct methods of permeability can be performed either in the laboratory or in the field. The indirect methods can be predicted from the soil-water characteristics curve. Laboratory test methods to measure the coefficient of permeability can be categorized into two types, steady-state and unsteady-state. In this study, the coefficient of permeability for unsaturated soils was determined by the modified apparatus for steady state-method(Klute, 1972) and was predicted from the equations of Brooks and Corey(1964) and Van Genuchten(1980). Experimental results were compared with predicted coefficient of permeability and verified applicability of the two equations.

We developed a compact micro indentation testing device (designated SNUT) which is capable to measure Young's modulus of a sample using depth and applied load data during indentation. Performance of this device was evaluated using pure Ti, pure Ni, and die steel (SKD11). As a result of analysing the indentation test data, the frame compliance $C_f$ was found to influence mainly the modulus by 80% among several factors affecting accuracy of Young's modulus. Project area, which was determined by indirect indentation method, was modified using direct SEM observation. Finally, Young's modulus error was reduced to 5% after taking into consideration the frame compliance and modified projected area from 80% error without any these two correction factors. The performance of SNUT and MTS instruments was compared using same specimen (pure Ti).
OBJECTIVES : The objective of this research is to develop additives for the modification of Solvent DeAsphalting Residue (SDAR) to be used as pavement materials, and evaluate the performance of asphalt mixture manufactured using the SDAR modified by developed additives. METHODS : The SDAR generally consists of more asphaltenes and less oil components compared to the conventional asphalt binder, and hence, the chemical/physical properties of SDAR are different from that of conventional asphalt binder. In this research, the additives are developed using the low molecular oil-based plasticizer to improve the properties of SDAR. First, the chemical property of two SDARs is analyzed using SARA (saturate, aromatic, resin, and asphaltene) method. The physical/rheological properties of SDARs and SDARs containing additives are also evaluated based on PG-grade method and dynamic shear-modulus master curve. Second, various laboratory tests are conducted for the asphalt mixture manufactured using the SDAR modified with additives. The laboratory tests conducted in this study include the mix design, compactibility analysis, indirect tensile test for moisture susceptibility, dynamic modulus test for rheological property, wheel-tracking test for rutting performance, and direct tension fatigue test for cracking performance. RESULTS : The PG-grade of SDARs is higher than PG 76 in high temperature grades and immeasurable in low temperature grades. The dynamic shear modulus of SDARs is much higher than that of conventional asphalt, but the modified SDARs with additives show similar modulus compared to that of conventional asphalt. The moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixture with modified SDARs is good if, the anti-stripping agent is included. The performance (dynamic modulus, rutting resistance, and fatigue resistance) of asphalt mixture with modified SDARs is comparable to that of conventional asphalt mixture when appropriate amount of additives is added. CONCLUSIONS : The saturate component of SDARs is much less than that of conventional asphalt, and hence, it is too hard and brittle to be used as pavement materials. However, the modified SDARs with developed additives show comparable or better rheological/physical properties compared to that of conventional asphalt depending on the type of SDAR and the amount of additives used.
It is very important to ensure the reliability of dam inflow data, which is critical in planning and managing the supply and demand of water resources in a basin. However, the simple water balance model sometimes results in negative inflows and does not consider the actual inflow characteristics. In this study, to address these issues, the existing water balance formula was modified by considering evaporation which is available for calculation among other outflows. The modified water balance formula was applied to the Soyang Dam. The results showed that the rate of negative inflows decreased in the re-evaluated dam inflow data and it was possible to secure consistency for the total inflow volume. In addition, investigating the water availability in the Soyang Dam watershed based on the water balance concept considering evaporation, it was found that direct water use in the human aspect was about 60%, and the indirect water use in the natural aspect was about 40%. In drought years, it was also confirmed that the proportion of indirect use of water resources increased.
This study investigates the effect of self-esteem and Korean ability on acculturative stress of marriage-based immigrant Asian women in Korea. It also attempts to find out whether self-esteem has any mediating effect between Korean ability and acculturative stress. By using purposive sampling method, 280 samples were collected among Vietnamese, Filipino, and Chinese women in Daegu from Oct. 12th to Nov. 3rd, 2008. The results are as follows: The higher the score of self-esteem and that of Korean ability is, the lower the score of acculturative stress is respectively. It is proved that self-esteem has mediating effect between Korean ability and acculturative stress. Therefore it is emphasized that programs which can improve self-esteem should be provided to marriage-based immigrant women, especially to those who do not have sufficient Korean ability. Sending money to home country shows both direct and indirect effects and subjective economic evaluation shows direct effects on acculturative stress score. For the purpose of the study acculturative stress scale has been modified based on Sandhu and Asrabadi(1994), which turns out to be useful to measure acculturative stress of marriage-based immigrant Asian women in Korea because it reflects their life circumstances quite well. Some practical implications of social work are suggested through discussion.

In general, it is well known fact that the stone mastic asphalt (SMA) pavement has a high resistance against rutting. However, performance of SMA is not well measured by general method used in the laboratory. The objective of this study is to investigate an applicability of deformation strength ($S_D$) for performance estimation of SMA, and to find out the correlation between rut depth and dynamic stability, and $S_D$ of SMA. This study carried out wheel tracking test and Kim-test with optimum asphalt content (OAC) determined by mix design. The results indicated that the $S_D$ of SMA was very poorer than those of dense-graded asphalt mixtures. $S_D$ showed similar WT dynamic stability and rut-depth level. It was found that Kim-test was not reflected higher rutting resistance of SMA like as indirect tensile strength (ITS) test and Marshall stability test. Also, it was revealed that dynamic stability and rut-depth of WT had some problems to estimate rutting resistance of SMA mixtures.
