  • In case of USA, the drilled shaft and the driven pile in the field showed a good correlation in the analysis of the bearing capacity between the dynamic load test and the static load test. However, in Korea, we mainly install the bored pile, which is not widely used overseas and we tried to confirm the reliability of the dynamic load test on the bored pile, because many people questioned the reliability of it. In this study, load tests were carried out on PHC bored piles in LH field (Cheonan, Incheon, Uijeongbu), and the bearing capacity of the dynamic load test (EOID 7times, Restrike 7times) and the static load test (7times) were compared and analyzed. As a result, the average of the bearing capacity of the static load test was 27% higher than that of the dynamic load test (reliability : 0.73, coefficient of variation : 0.3). And the average of the bearing capacity of the static load test (Davisson) was 27% higher than that of the bearing capacity of the dynamic load test (Davisson) (reliability : 0.73, coefficient of variation : 0.2). To reduce the difference between the bearing capacity of the dynamic load test and the static load test, we proposed modified bearing capacity of dynamic load test (base bearing capacity of EOID + skin frictional force of restrike) and difference between the bearing capacities was reduced to 9% (reliability : 0.91, coefficient of variation : 0.2). And the coefficient of variation was reduced to 0.2 and the consistency of analysis increased.

  • It is very difficult to accomplish load tests of piles with large diameter constructed on the offshore area, because of requirement for large scaled loading equipment and bad testing conditions. Therefore, so far in many cases pile driving dynamic formulas have applied to quality control, and recently dynamic load test method is widely used for confirming bearing capacities of such piles. However, in cases of piles with very large diameter about 2,500mm, it is nearly impossible for regular type load test methods of piles such as static and dynamic to apply owing to very large design load. This is case studies of load tests such as modified static and dynamic load tests of piles and point load tests of rock samples for estimating rational allowable bearing capacity of very large diameter piles constructed on the marine area.

  • The estimation of pile bearing capacity is important since the design details are determined from the result. There are numerous ways of determining the pile design load, but only few of them are chosen in the actual design. According to the recent investigation in Korea, the formulas proposed by Meyerhof based on the SPT N values are most frequently chosen in the design stage. In the study, various static and dynamic formulas have been used in predicting the allowable bearing capacity of a pile. Further, the reliability of these formulas has been verified by comparing the perdicted values with the static and dynamic load test measurements. Also in cases, these methods of pile bearing capacity determination do not take the time effect consideration, the actual allowable load as determined from pile load test indicates severe deviation from the design value. The principle results of this study are summarized as follows : A a result of estimate the reliability in criterion of the Davisson method, in was showed that Terzaghi & Peck > Chin > Meyerhof > Modified Meyerhof method was the most reliable method for the prediction of bearing capacity. Comparisons of the various pile-driving formulas showed that Modified Engineering News was the most reliable method. However, a significant error happened between dynamic bearing capacity equation was judged that uncertainty of hammer efficiency, characteristics of variable , time effect etc... was not considered. As a result of considering time effect increased skin friction capacity higher than end bearing capacity. It was found out that it would be possible to increase the skin friction capacity 1.99 times higher than a driving. As a result of considering 7 day's time effect, it was obtained that Engineering News. Modified Engineering News. • In Europe and the United States, the use of limit states design has almost been established for pile foundation design. According to the global trend, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs has established the basic design criteria of the bridge under the limit state design method. However, it is difficult to reflect on the design right now because of lack of research on resistance coefficient of the pile method and ground condition. In this study, to obtain the resistance coefficient of PHC bored pile which is widely used in Korea, the bearing capacity calculated by the LH design standard and the bridge design standard method, the static load test(21 times) and the dynamic load test(EOID 21 times, Restrike 21) The reliability analysis was performed on the results. The analysis of the resistance coefficient of PHC bored pile by loading test was analyzed by adding more than two times data. As a result, the resistance coefficient obtained from the static load test(ultimate bearing capacity) was 0.64 ~ 0.83 according to the design formula and the target reliability index, and the resistance coefficient obtained from the dynamic load test(ultimate bearing capacity) was 0.42~0.55. Respectively. The resistance coefficient obtained from the modified bearing capacity of dynamic load test(EOID's ultimate end bearing capacity + restrike's ultimate skin bearing capacity) was 0.55~0.71, which was reduced to about 14% when compared with the resistance coefficient obtained by the static load test(ultimate bearing capacity). As a result of the addition of the data, the resistivity coefficient was not changed significantly, even if the data were increased more than 2 times by the same value or 0.04 as the previous resistance coefficient. In conclusion, the overall resistance coefficient calculated by the static load test and dynamic load tests in this study is larger than the resistance coefficient of 0.3 suggested by the bridge design standard(2015).

  • In Europe and the USA, the use of limit state design method has been established, and the Korea Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs has implemented the bridge substructure design standard based on the critical state. But Korean piling methods and ground conditions are different from Europe and USA, the limit state design method can not be used immediately. In this study, the resistance coefficient was proposed by comparing and analyzing the results of the static load test(9 times) and dynamic load tests(9 times of EOID and 9 times of Restrike) with the bearing capacity calculated by Meyerhof(LH design standard, Road bridge design standard) method and surcharge load method(using Terzaghi's bearing capacity coefficient and Hansen & Vesic's bearing capacity coefficient). The previous LHI study showed the resistance coefficient of the LH design standard was 0.36 ~ 0.44, and this research result showed the resistance coefficient was 0.39 ~ 0.48 which is about 8% higher than the previous study. In this study, we tried to obtain the resistance coefficient mainly from the static load test and the resistance coefficient was 0.57 ~ 0.69(Meyhof method : LH design standard) based on the ultimate bearing capacity and the resistance coefficient was 0.49 ~ 0.60(Meyhof method : LH design standard) based on the Davissons bearing capacity. The difference of the resistance coefficient between the static and dynamic load test was greater than that we expected, we proposed the resistance coefficient(0.52 ~ 0.62 : Meyerhof method: LH design standard) using the modified bearing capacity of the dynamic load test. Summarizing the result, the coefficient of resistance obtained from the static and dynamic load tests was 0.35 ~ 0.76, which is greater than 0.3 suggested by the Road bridge design standard, so the economical design might be possible using the coefficient of resistance proposed by this study.

  • As the urban regeneration project and the old housing maintenance project are actively progressing in Korea, small-scale building construction is being carried out in downtown areas. Small buildings in the downtown area are constructed on about 4 to 10 floors, and since they are carried out in small units in residential areas, it is difficult to enter large equipment to construct existing piles, and it is more vulnerable to complaints about noise and vibration. in this study, helical piles suitable for urban areas or small sites where it is difficult to enter large equipment, such as noise and vibration. Reliability analysis was performed on the results of the static load tests and dynamic load tests conducted at the LH site and the bearing capacity calculated by the hydrostatic method and the empirical formula (N value). As a result of comparing and analyzing the design formula and the results of static load test and dynamic load tests, the correlation between the design formula of the bored pile (Road bridge design standard) formula using N value and the design formula by the modified Davisson method frequently used by method commonly European helical file practitioners.

  • The domestic auger-drilled pile method generally manages the driving penetration (set) value with the final stage of construction. The penetration value has been estimated by manual measurement for a long time. The automation technology is yet to be applied due to workability and high-cost limitations, despite safety issues and lack of reliability in measured results. In this study, a non-contact pile penetration measurement device was developed. Further, the field performance was verified by comparing the measurements with a conventional automation device. In addition, the on-site field quality control method was analyzed using the penetration measuring device. The field experiments confirmed that more reliable bearing capacity estimation could calculate the dynamic damping coefficient and the modified Hiley formula with the developed device. Furthermore, it can be used for pile construction management from the bearing capacity viewpoint, even for piles not subjected to dynamic load tests.

  • In accordance with Korean structural foundation design standards, dynamic or static load tests are mandated for 1 to 3% of total piles. The construction quality of the remaining 97% to 99% of piles is determined through penetration measurements. This study aims to enhance the quality control of the majority of piles by adopting a pile driving formula that considers both penetration and hammer energy. The current challenge lies in adapting existing overseas driving formulas to the domestic site conditions, characterized by shallow weathered or soft rocks, and the prevalent use of pre-bored piles. To address this, the Modified Gates formula was refined using domestic dynamic load data, thereby improving its applicability to pile management. Despite employing fewer variables, the proposed formula demonstrates a comparable accuracy to dynamic loading tests in predicting the bearing capacity of pre-bored piles. Consequently, this formula holds promise for practical use in future pile quality management.

  • In Korea, driven piles are generally penetrated up to weathered rock or harder strata. Friction piles have been used to some extent in the southwest coastal area with deep soils; however, friction piles are not extensively due to uncertainties about construction quality. The embedded pile construction method is primarily used due to noise and vibration complaints. However, in Southeast Asian countries (e.g., Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam), where soft sediments are deep, the driven pile method is commonly used due to its economic advantages. Construction companies are increasingly entering overseas construction markets, e.g., Southeast Asia; thus, it is necessary to understand the behavior of driven friction piles in the soil and improve on-site engineering management to gain market competitiveness in these countries. In this study, the bearing capacity of friction piles driven into clayey coastal soils in Vietnam with time-dependent characteristics was evaluated based on the dynamic and static pile load tests. Based on the results, a modified Danish formula is proposed for on-site quality management.
