  • This paper presents a novel and efficient method to calculate the critical point of voltage collapse. Conjugate gradient and modified Newton-Raphson methods are employed to calculate two pairs of multiple load flow solutions for two operating conditions, i.e., both +mode and -mode voltages for two loading conditions respectively. Then these four voltage magnitude-load data sets of the bus which is most susceptible to voltage collapse, are fitted to third order polynomial using Lagrangian interpolation in order to represent approximate nose curve (P-V curve). This nose curve locates first estimate of the critical point of voltage collapse. The procedure described above is repeated near the critical point and the new estimate will be very close to the critical point. The proposed method is tested for the eleven bus Klos-Kerner system, with good accuracy and fast computation time.

  • A 3D magnetostatic field is analyzed considering the non-linear characteristics of the material using finite element method. In the finite element formulation, the edge element is adopted since it reduces the required computer memory and the computing time. The modified Newton-Raphson method is also used for non-linear analysis. A numerical example with the TEAM workshop problem 13 is analyzed, and the results are proved to concide well with measured ones.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an algorithm, which can be designed the optimal sections of the composite framed structures constituted with the beams and the columns consisted of H type of steel section and concrete considering the reliability index. The optimized problem or the composite framed structures is formulated with the objective function and the constraints taking the section sizes as the design variables. The objective functions are constituted by the total costs of constructions. Also, the constraints are derived by considering the reliability index of section stress and allowable stress. The algorithm optimized the section of the composite framed structures utilizes the SUMT method using the modified Newton-Raphson direction method. The optimizing algorithm developed in this study is applied to the numerical examples with respecting a one-bay, one-story composite framed structure and a one-bay five-story one for the practical utilization of design on the composite framed structures using the reliability indices$({\beta})$ three and zero. In addition, their numerical results are compared and analyzed to examine the possibility of optimization the applicability, and the convergence this algorithm.

  • Purpose: This study investigates mechanical behavior of functionally graded (FG) carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (CNTRC) plate in flexure. Isogeometric analysis (IGA) method coupled with shear deformable theory of higher-order (HSDT) to analyze the nonlinear bending response is presented. Method: Shear deformable plate theory into which a polynomial shear shape function and the von Karman type geometric nonlinearity are incorporated is used to derive the nonlinear equations of equilibrium for FG-CNTRC plate in bending. The modified Newton-Raphson iteration is adopted to solve the system equations. Result: The dispersion pattern of carbon nanotubes, plate geometric parameter and boundary condition have significant effects on the nonlinear flexural behavior of FG-CNTRC plate. Conclusion: The proposed IGA method coupled with the HSDT can successfully predict the flexural behavior of FG-CNTRC plate.

  • Currently, Studies on improving the reliability of power supply is becoming an important issue because of the increase in demand of the electric power system. Therefore necessity of automation in distribution system is increasing day by day. However, a measured voltage data from FRTU of distribution automation system is incorrect because of installation space limits. Therefore there is a need of system analysis method by considering the characteristics of the distribution system. For a distribution system, applying the power flow method of transmission system has some problems, as distribution is radial system and it has unbalanced load. Therefore power flow by considering the characteristics of the distribution system have been studied. Existing power flow analysis of the distribution system has different methods like direct analysis method, backward/forward sweep method, modified method of newton raphson etc. In this paper, an improved power flow analysis method based on backward/forward sweep method is proposed in order to efficiently operate the distribution automation system. The proposed method of power flow has been verified through the result of case study.

  • Double-peak normal distribution function was suggested as the probability density function of the tidal elevation data in Korean coastal zone. Frequency distribution analysis was carried out using hourly tidal elevation data of the ten tidal gauging stations, i.e., Incheon, Kunsan, Mokpo, Cheju, Yeosu, Masan, Gadeokdo, Pusan, Pohang, and Sokcho which were served through the Internet Homepage by the National Ocean Research Institute. Based on the RMS error and $R^2$ value comparison analysis, it was found that this suggested function as the probability density function of the tidal elevation data was found to be more appropriate than the normal distribution function. The parameters of the double-peak function were estimated optimally using Levenberg-Marquardt method which was modified from the Newton method. The estimated parameters were highly correlated with the non-tidal constants of the tidal gauging stations.

  • In this paper, an implementation of RS (Reed-Solomon) code decoder for CDP (Compact Disc Player) using microprogramming method is presented. In this decoding strategy, the equations composed of Newton's identities are used for computing the coefficients of the error locator polynomial and for checking the number of erasures in C2(outer code). Also, in C2 decoding the values of erasures are computed from syndromes and the results of C1(inner code) decoding. We pulled up the error correctability by correcting 4 erasures or less. The decoder contains an arithmetic logic unit over GF(28) for error correcting and a decoding controller with programming ROM, and also microinstructions. Microinstructions are used for an implementation of a decoding algorithm for RS code. As a result, it can be easily modified for upgrade or other applications by changing the programming ROM only. The decoder is implemented by the Logic Level Modeling of Verilog HDL. In the decoder, each microinstruction has 14 bits( = 1 word), and the size of the programming ROM is 360 words. The number of the maximum clock-cycle for decoding both C1 and C2 is 424.

  • Purpose: This study attempts at analyzing mechanical response of functionally graded material (FGM) plates in bending. An accurate and effective numerical approach based on isogeometric analysis (IGA) combined with higher-order shear deformation plate theory to predict the nonlinear flexural behavior is developed. Method: A higher-order shear deformation theory(HSDT) which accounts for the geometric nonlinearity in the von Karman sense is presented and used to derive the equilibrium and governing equations for FGM plate in bending. The nonlinear equations are solved by the modified Newton-Raphson iterative technique. Result: The volume fraction, plate length-to-thickness ratio and boundary condition have signifiant effects on the nonlinear flexural behavior of FGM plates. Conclusion: The proposed IGA method can be used as an accurate and effective numerical tool for analyzing the mechanical responses of FGM plates in flexure.

  • In this paper, the dynamic analysis of a dolphin system for mooring a floating structure such as barge mounted plant is studied. The characteristics of the soil-pile system are simplified by a set of equivalent spring elements at the mudline. To evaluate the equivalent spring constants, the finite difference method is used. Since the characteristics of the soil-pile system are nonlinear in case of soft foundation, the nonlinear dynamic analysis technique is needed. The Newmark $beta$ method incorporating the modified Newton-Raphson method(initial stiffness method) is used. A numerical analysis is performed on two mooring dolphin systems on soft foundation and rock foundation. In case of the rock foundation, the characteristics are found to be nearly linear, so the linear dynamic analysis may be sufficient to consider the foundation effect. But in case of soft foundation, the non-linearity of the foundation appears to be very signigicant, so the nonlinear dynamic analysis si needed.
