  • In this paper, we propose an image retrieval system using the MBCM(Modified Borda Count method) in CME(Combining Multiple Experts). It combines color-, shape- and texture-based retrieval sub-systems. CME method can complementarily combine results of each retrieval system, which uses different features. There are some problems when the Borda count method in pattern recognition is applied to image retrieval. Thus, we propose a modified Borda count method to solve these problems. In the experiment, our method reduces false positive errors and produces better results than that of each retrieval module that uses only one feature.

  • Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in the fields of video surveillance and mobile object tracking. This paper proposes a mobile object tracking algorithm. First, several parameters such as object window, object area, and expansion-contraction (E-C) parameter are defined. Then, a modified E-C algorithm for multiple-object tracking is presented. The proposed algorithm tracks moving objects by expansion and contraction of the object window. In addition, it includes methods for updating the background image and avoiding occlusion of the target image. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified experimentally. For example, the first scenario traces the path of two people walking in opposite directions in a hallway, whereas the second one is conducted to track three people in a group of four walkers.

  • According to an evolution of image and video compression technologies, most digital images are in the compressed form. Resizing of these compressed images have various applications such as transmission of resized image according to varying bandwidth, content adaptation for display purpose and etc. Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is the most popular transformation for image compression. Recently, several researches have been performed to obtain the reconstructed image of original size in the DCT domain after downsampling and upsampling in the DCT domain. Main focus of these researches is to improve quality of the reconstructed image after downsampling and upsampling in the DCT domain In this paper, we present an modified IDCT method to downsize DCT-encoded image. Furthermore, we propose an efficient scheme for image downsampling and upsampling in the DCT domain With these modified IDCT method. The proposed scheme Provides higher PSNR values than the existing schemes In terms of the reconstructed image after halving and doubling in the DCT domain.

  • The image data compression, recognition, restoration, etc. are parts of the digital image processing technology. In the process by various devices, noises would be made. Because the noise could damage the image, we use the image filter to preserve the original image from the noise. The image filter used in digital image process basically has a two-dimensional structure. There an two methods of creating the filter - One is reiterating one dimension and the other is using an indivisible two-dimension image filter. The image filter is being widely used along with one-dimension filter according to each noise, and various median filters are being used to remove the impulse noise. In this paper, I suggested a powerful modified median filter, and compared with conventional filters for objective verification.

  • In this paper the intent recognition system which recognizes the human's head movements as a simple non-verbal intent representation is presented. The system recognizes five basic intent representations. i.e., strong/weak affirmation. strong/weak negation, and ambiguity by image processing of nodding or shaking movements of head. The vision system for tracking the head movements is composed of CCD camera, image processing board and personal computer. The modified template matching method which replaces the reference image with the searched target image in the previous step is used for the robust tracking of the head movements. For the improvement of the processing speed, the searching is performed in the pyramid representation of the original image. By inspecting the variance of the head movement trajectories. we can recognizes the two basic intent representations - affirmation and negation. Also, by focusing the speed of the head movements, we can see the possibility which recognizes the strength of the intent representation.

  • A Content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system employs visual features rather than manual annotation of images. The selection of optimal features used in classification of images plays a key role in its performance. Category proliferation problem has a huge impact on performance of systems using Fuzzy Artmap (FAM) classifier. The proposed CBIR system uses a modified version of FAM called Non-Proliferation Fuzzy Artmap (NPFAM). This is developed by introducing significant changes in the learning process and the modified algorithm is evaluated by extensive experiments. Results have proved that NPFAM classifier generates a more compact rule set and performs better than FAM classifier. Accordingly, the CBIR system with NPFAM classifier yields good retrieval.

  • In the modern society where the communication technology has rapidly developed, image devices such as digital display, camera, etc., forms the center. However, during the transmission of image data, storing, and obtaining, a noise is added to the image due to various reasons and degrades the quality of the image. In this paper, an average filter algorithm modified in order to ease the effect of AWGN(additive white Gaussian noise) being added to the image was proposed. Also compare existing methods through the using PSNR.

  • The problem of blocking artifacts is very common in block-based image and video compression, especially at very low bit rates. In this paper, we propose a post-processing method for JPEG-coded image deblocking via sparse representation and adaptive residual threshold. This method includes three steps. First, we obtain the dictionary by online dictionary learning and the compressed images. The dictionary is then modified by the histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) feature descriptor and K-means cluster. Second, an adaptive residual threshold for orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) is proposed and used for sparse coding by combining blind image blocking assessment. At last, to take advantage of human visual system (HVS), the edge regions of the obtained deblocked image can be further modified by the edge regions of the compressed image. The experimental results show that our proposed method can keep the image more texture and edge information while reducing the image blocking artifacts.

  • Visibility in underwater images is usually poor because of the attenuation of light in the water that causes low contrast and color variation. In this paper, a new approach for underwater image quality improvement is presented. The proposed method aims to improve underwater image contrast, increase image details, and reduce noise by applying a new method of using contrast stretching to produce two different images with different contrasts. The proposed method integrates the modification of the image histogram in two main color models, RGB and HSV. The histograms of the color channel in the RGB color model are modified and remapped to follow the Rayleigh distribution within certain ranges. The image is then converted to the HSV color model, and the S and V components are modified within a certain limit. Qualitative and quantitative analyses indicate that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods in terms of contrast, details, and noise reduction. The image color also shows much improvement.

  • The MTF(Modulation Transfer Function) is one of quality assesment factors to evaluate the performance of satellite images. Image restoration is needed for MTF compensation, but it is an ill-posed problem and doesn't have a certain solution. Lots of filters were suggested to solve this problem, such as Inverse Filter(IF), Pseudo Inverse Filter(PIF) and Wiener Filter(WF). The most commonly used filter is a WF, but it has a limitation on distinguishing signal and noise. The L-curve-based Modified Wiener Filter(MWF) is a solution technique using a Tikhonov regularization method. The L-curve is used for estimating an optimal regularization parameter. The image restoration was performed with Dubaisat-1 images for PIF, WF, and MWF. It is found that the image restored with MWF results in more improved MTF by 20.93% and 10.85% than PIF and WF, respectively.
