  • Pulse diagnosis is one of the typical examination methods in traditional oriental medicine. Pulse type classification is a major element of this diagnosis. There are more than 20 pulse types which have each clinical significance. However, pulse type's indications are implicative and obscure. In this study, we reviewed string pulse which is often diagnosed in Traditional Korean Medicine by analysis of Traditional Oriental Medical Literatures and modern medical papers. String pulse is taut and stiff pulse with high tension and low softness. It appears in 'blood vessel endothelial dysfunction', 'autonomic imbalance', 'arteriosclerosis'. Persistent string pulse can bring about cardiovascular or central nervous disease.

  • Most of cancer therapy consists of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy developed by modern western medicine. Often Korean patients use both modem western and oriental medicine through their cancer life. This study tried out to answer the the question : "What are the experience of a Korean cancer patients who follow oriental medicine after cancer diagnosis?" To answer to that, a micro-ethnographic research method was used. Total 6 patients were observed from March, 1996 to February, 1997. Data were obtained through interview, participant observation, audio-tape recording, field recoding, field note-taking, and ralated documents Using an analytical tool known as "pencil and scissors", the data were analyzed. First, I learned patietnts' accounts for cancer experience following oriental medicine, and I could found that they expereinced "feeling of uncertainty" through cancer life. Second, major argument was searched. : Feeling of uncertainty of cancer patients was extremely increased after cancer diagnosis. Oriental Medicine made cancer patients not only expect to improve general physical condition, but also gave them significnat emotional support to overcome their feeling of uncertanty. Third, I examined how did this argument form meanings in the context of individual life. Modem western mediacal service system could not satisfy cancer patients' informational and emotional need. But oriental medicine contribute to relieve the degree of their feeling of uncertainty. As a result of these understandings, I suggest that modern wetern medicine need to be concerned to feeling of uncertainty of cancer patietns and infomational service, and oriental medicine counsel with cancer patients much more systemically. Also nurses must improve cancer education with more accurate and practical information based on empirical data.

  • We re-classified traditional medicinal prescriptions in Dong-Eui-Bo-Gam for the modern application using Tradimed database. They could be devided into 6 categories by the definitions of the related laws. Herbal ethical drugs are the majority, 3926 items, account for 60.21% of total items. Herbal Health Functional Foods stands second, 1480 items, 22.70%, Herbal over the counter drugs are 893 items, 13.69%. These three categories are about 83% of total items. Herbal medical supplies are 158 items, 2.42%, Herbal medical tools are 44 items, 0.67%, Herbal cosmetics are 20 items, occupied 0.31 %. Therefore we have known that traditional medicinal prescriptions can be used not only as drugs, but also as funtional foods, cosmetics, and tools. So they should be developed as modern products to make best use of them. And we suggested that we need official criteria of herbs of careful use and higher standards for herbs which can be used as foods.

  • Stereotactic radiosurgery is one of the most sophisticated forms of modern advanced radiation therapy. Unlike conventional fractionated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery uses a high dose of radiation with steep gradient precisely delivered to target lesions. Lars Leksell presented the principle of radiosurgery in 1951. Gamma Knife® (GK) is the first radiosurgery device used in clinics, and the first patient was treated in the winter of 1967. The first GK unit had 179 cobalt 60 sources distributed on a hemispherical surface. A patient could move only in a single direction. Treatment planning was performed manually and took more than a day. The latest model, Gamma Knife® IconTM, shares the same principle but has many new dazzling characteristics. In this article, first, a brief history of radiosurgery was described. Then, the physical properties of modern radiosurgery machines and physicists' endeavors to assure the quality of radiosurgery were described. Intrinsic characteristics of modern radiosurgery devices such as small fields, steep dose distribution producing sharp penumbra, and multi-directionality of the beam were reviewed together with the techniques to assess the accuracy of these devices. The reference conditions and principles of GK dosimetry given in the most recent international standard protocol, International Atomic Energy Agency TRS 483, were shortly reviewed, and several points needing careful revisions were highlighted. Understanding the principles and physics of radiosurgery will be helpful for modern medical physicists.

  • Unsatisfied with the modern medicine's treatment of diabetes, patients diagnosed with the disease turn to alternative medicine for treatment. A look at the percentage of people using alternative medicine marked 72.8% in the United States and more than 60% in Korea in 2006. The most preferred form of alternative medicine turned out to be usage of dietary supplements and herbal medicine. Most of the dietary supplements and herbs that diabetic patients use largely originated from their usage in East Asian Traditional Medicine. As Western Medicine made its way into East Asia in late 18th century, excessive efforts were made to translate Western medical terminology into traditional medical terminology equivalents. In the process of doing so, wasting-thirst became a concept equivalent to diabetes. Theories regarding the pathogenic outbreak and transmission of wasting-thirst has been supplemented and progressed according to needs and even showed new tendencies. Profound understanding of wasting-thirst achieved through historical research is expected to lead to proper application of wasting-thirst treatment methods in treating modern diabetes.

  • "Regulatory Function of Lung(肺主治節)" is one of the major function of lung, but its meaning is still controversial. The word "治節(Regulatory Function)" was first discovered in "黃帝內經(Huangdineijing)". In Chinese medicine text of modern China, physiological meaning of "治節" can be roughly divided into two; one is respiratory function, and another is to help cardiovascular function of the heart. In addition to this, "治節" has been construed in various ways, but all of them is not realistic. There has been several viewpoints that '節' in '治節' means 24 seasonal divisions and they can be representatively found in "東醫寶鑑(Donguibogam)". Based on all of these views, modern western medical physiology is requirement for further study about physiology of internal organs.

  • The iron contents in the foodstuffs used for treatment of anemia as dietary treatments in Part Tang-Aik(湯液編) of Tong-Eui-Bo-Gam, (which was treatments of herb medicine. in Royal family) are studied on the purpose of comparing these Korean traditional and oriental herb medicine with modern nutrition and medicine, focusing especially upon the scientific values residing in them. The iron contents in grains, reptilla, feathered tribes, mammals, and fruits advised good for anemia in Tong-Eui-Bo-Gam are in average per 100g weight base, 8.6, 5.0, 6.5, 3.4, and 2.12 mg each respectively, while in thoes not advised good for anemia in the same part, the iron contents are 2.34, 2.63, 1.4, 2.21 and 0.97mg each respectively. To compare these two groups, in the foodstuffs advised good for anemia in Korean traditional herb medicine represented in Tong-Eui-Bo-Gam, the iron contents are much higher than in those not advised groups. However, in classes of vegetables and fishes, the iron contents are reversed. In conclusion, it is very difficult to say that all the dietary treatments advised in Korean traditional herb medicine are scientific in modern medical view point, however, it has some value doubtlessly to research Korean traditional herb medicine in modern aspect. Furthermore, in this study, Korean traditional medicine, arguing being built upon thousands years of experiences has been found .to have some scientific bases such as high iron contents in food stuffs advised good for anemia represented in Tong-Eui-Bo-Gam.

"The Elimination & Supplement about the Famous Prescription Comments(刪補名醫方論)"that forms one part of "The Golden Mirror of Medicine(醫宗金鑑)", is a collection of famous notes about important prescriptions. Many parts of "The Elimination & Supplement about the Famous Prescription Comments(刪補名醫方論)" were quoted from "The Famous Prescription Comments on Ancient and Modern Times(古今名醫方論)". The first part of the vol. Ⅱ of "The Elimination & Supplement about the Famous Prescription Comments(刪補名醫方論)"mainly describes about the prescriptions of elevating Yanggi[升陽], which were invented by Igo(李杲, Ligao), a famous physician of the Geum(金, Jin) Dynasty. The treatments were five and three of them were quoted from "The Famous Prescription Comments on Ancient and Modern Times(古今名醫方論)". The basic rule of herbal combination of these prescriptions is a combination of herbs of strengthening-gi[補氣] and dispersing herbs[發散藥]. If the dispersing herbs[發散藥] is used with the herbs of strengthening-gi[補氣藥], they elevate Yanggi(陽氣) together.

  • Objective : This study aimed to develop a new category system of Yanseng(養生) for traditional Korean Medicine in order to prepare the ground for organizing the resources of Yangseng systematically. Method : We reviewed the existing medical books containing Yangseng contents. Based on the experts' consensus, we drew the new category system of Yangseng in consideration of a national trait of Korea and use of Yanseng in modern society. Results : First, We devided Yangseng category into two parts: methods and applications. Methods are divided into 5 parts: mind, diet, herb, Doinangyo(導引按蹻), life. A broad use of herbs in daily life is a national trait of Korea. Doinangyo contains relaxation methods like breathing, massages and exercises like Qigong and is also very popular way to maintain health in modern western society. Applications are divided into 6 parts: type of constitution, life cycle, seasons, type of symptoms and signs, type of Mibyung(未病) and diseases. We drew this 6 parts in consideration of use in the field of health care. Conclusion : The new category system of yangseng is based on existing theories and reflects Korean national trait and use of Yanseng in modern society. We hope this new category system play a role of foundation for organizing the resources of Yangseng systematically.
