  • This study focuses on the origin and the literature of eyelid-acupuncture, nunchim therapy in Korea and its present clinical usage in modern Korea. The therapy is called nunchim at local area of Korea and has been transmitted as folk remedy because its real practice has been fallen into oblivion in the regular medical institution in modern Korea. On the contrast, some old women called nunchim-halmae, still know its practice and give medical therapy in a certain irregular way. While many kinds of eye clinics are prevalent in Korea, some patients with chronic eye diseases still go to get the nunchim therapy from nunchim-halmae. Moreover some oriental medical doctors have learned the therapy from nunchim-halmae and performed that medical service in their clinics in spite of absence of medical insurance coverage. Nunchim has unique historic origin and transmission linage in Korea, which was shed light on by this research. We present concise structure of the essence of nunchim therapy and 80 year old woman case of dramatic eye curing with the therapy.

  • Objectives : The Dongui Bogam in My Hand', which is an output of computerizing Donguibogam (Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine), is an interim outcome of the research project led by the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine. This study examined the process in which Donguibogam, a record in Chinese and a classic of Oriental medicine, expanded into a modern content. Methods : This study will classify the modernization of Donguibogam into three 'contents' that form Donguibogam, 'container' that will hold the contents, and 'community' that is the consumer of Donguibogam. Towards the end, this study will sketch out the status of computerizing Chinese records in Korea, and point out the reality faced by computerization of ancient documents on Oriental medicine as well as the direction for the future. Results : 'The Dongui Bogam in My Hand' has been downloaded more than 10,000 times for 4 months since it releases in August 2014, and is used for at least 6,000 times on average every month. This achievement can be due to the two following reasons. First, the application contains high-quality contents such as the original text of Donguibogam as well as Korean and English translations. Second, it satisfied the needs of Donguibogam users with (1) the Browse function that well displays the table of contents, (2) the Search function that separates the title from the main text, and (3) the Personalization function designed to link and share relevant knowledge. Conclusions : Computerization of Chinese records was triggered by the request of the academia, but it was accelerated after being selected as a public laboring project to overcome the IMF crisis. However, computerization of ancient documents is not a simple task but a field of study to modernize classical knowledge. The success or failure of computerization of Chinese records is determined by whether high-quality modern 'contents' are secured, whether the 'container' design adequately implements the search, browse and link functions, and how well it fulfills the needs of the consumer 'community'.

  • Objectives : This study aimed to review the change in the origin of Sokdan(續斷) by diachronically analyzing literature data from Korea and China. Methods : Literature records describing the origin(synonyms, location of production, description) of Sokdan were collected, records were divided into periods. The main contents were included in the results, and original texts were edited and summarized in the table. Results : Sokdan, whose leaves resemble Jeoma(苧麻)(SJ), was first recorded in 《Xinxiubencao(新修本草)》, and described in detail in 《Bencaotujing(本草圖經)》 during the Tang and Song dynasties in China. In modern times, SJ was assumed to be genus Phlomoides or Lamium; however, records of the plant have decreased. Finally, SJ was not included in the 《Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China》 as Sokdan. However, 《Diannanbencao(滇南本草)》, 《Diannanbencaotushuo(滇南本草圖說)》, 《Zhiwumingshitukao(植物名實圖考)》 described Sokdan of dian(滇). It was assumed genus Dipsacus. From the 1950s onwards, Sokdan is described in the literature as a member of the genus Dipsacus. In korea, SJ was recorded in 《Hyangyakjipseongbang(鄕藥集成方)》 and 《Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)》 during the Joseon dynasty. In modern times, the genera Phlomoides and Lamium were mostly recorded as the origin of Sokdan. Conclusions : Several species have been described as Sokdan over the years in China, but since the 1950s, the genus Dipsacus was noted as the origin of Sokdan. In Korea, SJ was used in the past, thus Sokdan was recorded as P. umbrosa in 《The Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia(KHP)·1985》. However, 《KHP·1998》 referred to P. umbrosa as Hansokdan and D. asperoides as Sokdan.

  • A simple linear model to test the hypothesis based on one-on-one relationship has been used to find the causative factors of diseases. However, we now know that not just one, but many factors from different systems such as chemical exposure, genes, epigenetic changes, and proteins are involved in the pathogenesis of chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. So, with availability of modern technologies to understand the intricate nature of relations among complex systems, we need to move forward to the future by taking complex systems model.

  • Sleepiness, or hypersomnia, is a relatively common complaint and one of the main problems of modern society. Accurate evaluation and diagnosis of sleepiness are important. The methods used for evaluating sleepiness are subjective measures or self-evaluations, performance decrease measures, sleep propensity measures, and arousal decrease measures. A clear and detailed history is important in differential diagnosis of sleepiness because symptoms of sleepiness may be expressed in terms of 'tiredness' or 'fatigue' that do not directly denote sleepiness. Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation is also invaluable because these symptoms may result from a variety of causes ranging from medical disorders to insufficient nocturnal sleep.

  • The mandibular condyle is a region that plays a key role in the opening and closing of the mouth, and because fracture causes functional and aesthetic problems such as facial asymmetry, it is very important to perform accurate reduction. Traditionally, there has been disagreement on how to manage fracture of the mandibular condyle. This review explores the misunderstanding of mandibular condyle fracture treatment and modern-day treatment strategies.

  • Biomaterials have been used to supplement and restore function and structure by replacing or restoring parts of damaged tissues and organs. In ancient times, the medical use of biomaterials was limited owing to infection during surgery and poor surgical techniques. However, in modern times, the medical applications of biomaterials are diversifying owing to great developments in material science and medical technology. In this paper, we introduce biomaterials, focusing on calcium phosphate ceramics, including octacalcium phosphate, which has recently attracted attention as a bone graft material.

  • Akey factor in evolution is reproduction, which is also a major concern in medicine. Evolutionists have proposed many theories and hypotheses to explain the low fertility rates of modern industrial societies, which are contrary to maximization of biological fitness. Given that childbirth is the most significant factor affecting reproductive fitness, it is likely that a variety of psychological modules related to childbirth behavior and intention evolved over time. Several evolutionary psychological modules have been proposed in relation to reproduction, including sexual desire, status-seeking, a need for nurturing, and the desire for children. Previously adaptive psychological modules may now be expressed maladaptively due to the discrepancy between the Environment of Evolutionary Adaptedness (EEA) and the environment of modern industrial society. Several evolutionary ecological factors influence childbirth intention in modern society, including individual personality factors, childhood life history experiences, and socioecological factors throughout reproductive life. By focusing on mental, social, and ecological factors, this review examines several hypothetical models relating to evolutionary psychological factors and childbirth decisions in modern industrial society, as well as a possible explanation for the low birth rate.
