There are various internationally well known designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton. Danish Modern movement and International style had vital role to activate these designers' ideas and design quality. This paper aims to study the background and design characteristics of Danish Modern movement as well as some of the spatial projects by Arne Jacobsen. Furniture design of Jacobsen were already throughly studied in various researches. However his spatial projects such as architectural buildings and interior designs were not. After the case study, this study discovered that Danish Modern characteristics had unique roles in the design process of Jacobsen's projects. The term 'modern', in broader sense, refers to the concepts like modernity, modernization, modernism and the like, which came from Westernization impling the recognition of indigenous culture as being inferior to Western culture by comparison along with the expanded influences of the Empire of Japan. These concepts, however, rather than evolving from Western standards, came into being as a form of civilization led by Japan which had already tasted the fruits of modernization by 1920s. Since 1920s, the policy of, so-called, reconstructing Asian countries by Japan came to create eastern way of modernism, as a new East Asian trend mainly revealed in China which was against colonization after Japan's invasion and conquest of Manchuria. Therefore, Eastern' modern' unlike Western one could be understood in the widespread terminology, 'Modern(摩登)' in Shanghai, reflecting consciousness like 'Fashion' or 'Trend' in female images on a variety of visual media. By 1930s it was the most notable that 'modern' was accepted as something similar with 'Fashion', or 'Trend' in sociocultural contexts. These atmosphere had led commercial arts to enable to communicate with the public in a great deal of supports and success in Shanghai which was widely regarded as the citadel for the inflow of Western culture, among which transformations in female images were remarkable as a representative form of culture. It is also remarkable that 'historical modernity' transforming from the feudal age to modern society was considered a synchronic modernity, and nationalism was regarded as a sort of being modern, while involved in the newly-changed female images as a fashion mode. Changes in fashion including hair style in Shanghai by 1930s, as a way of expressions showing what was modern through commercial artistic productions, were easily noticed in visual media as an outlet of modern women's inner desire revealing their pursuit for new mode of life in metropolitan cities. As a characteristic of the time creating a new code of visual female images, it is notable that there existed another form of 'modern' satisfying socio-cultural needs of the general public seeking for being 'modern'.
This article is a reflective study on the 'modern' and 'modernity' in 'Modern Buddhism of Korea' research discourse. First, we raise the issue on how to define and describe the 'modern' in the recent 'Modern Buddhism of Korea' research. We raise some questions about whether there is the concept of "modernity" properly explained and agreed in Buddhist academia of Korea. And we will try to propose its solution. Next, we will briefly review the characteristics of 'modern' and 'modernity' in the flow of history of the West, which have never been discussed in the research discourse of "Modern Buddhist studies of Korea.' We will raise questions about whether it is possible to find a 'modernity' in itself what it is, and is further expected really 'modern' or 'modernity' in Korean conditions on the basis of this review. Finally, this article seeks to reveal what premises must be kept in mind in the 'Modern Buddhist studies of Korea', by critically reviewing researches of "Modern Buddhist studies of Korea".
This study is to examine how Sijo is being accommodated to modern Gagok by comparing them. In details, the work is about comparison between three verses in Sijo and twofold grouping in modern Gogok, JoongYuUm in traditional Gagok, YuBak in Sijo, the interlude, ADanSungJang, and changing verses in modern Gagok. First point is about three verses in Sijo and a rhythm of twofold grouping in modern Gagok. In particular, modern Gagok is treated as a group of twofold leaving three verses of Sijo. The way is chosen that whether it sets on an interlude into a song or the third part of three verses in Sijo is extended to avoid its logic of music and poem. Second, the discussion moves points on between an interlude in traditional Gagok and in Sijo. In the process of grouping twofold in modern Gagok, the parts which are interludes of both in traditional Gagok and in Sijo, combined with the interlude of the modern Gagok. It shows that the modern Gagok is affected on both the traditional Gagok and the Sijo. In addition, it explains elements of ADanSungJang - - tones and sounds in the modern Gagok. Originally, the traditional Gagok and sijo are composed of tones and sounds. At this point, tones are short, whereas sounds should be longer. This kind of way in the song has appeared on the modern Gagok of Hong, Nan-Pa. Lastly, the factors is about changing verses of modern Gagok. The one of differences between the modern Sijo and traditional Sijo is verses. For example, when it comes to sijo by Lee, Eun-Sang, he used to create his sijo with three verses. Hence, he did not change verses on his works. Whereas, the modern song "The Spring Lady" by Hong, Nan-Pa has shown the phenomenon that is separating three verses into six verses. It is noticeable that this phenomenon in "The Spring Lady" has the same bases with the modern Sijo.
The purpose of this study is to examine the innovative and experimental housing design alternatives in the transition period to the modern era and to discuss about the motivation of modern architectural form. Thus, first, this study examined the planning concepts and the meaning of new design of the four Werkbund dwelling Exhibitions in eastern Europe reflecting the demands of modern times. Second, I analyzed how the formative experiment appeared as a stereoscopic mass design and as a architectural composition in exterior. Experimental trials at housing exhibitions were to respond to the demands for the new forms, which required a new approach to modern style and aesthetics. The major features of formative experiments can be summarized as follows. First, new housing design have escaped from the historically descended style. Secondly, through the operation of volume and surface modern dwelling created a formative conformation. Finally, the shape and the surface replaced the decoration. In conclusion, the works of modern architects can be said to have achieved the harmony between 'purpose of expression' and 'technical purpose' in realizing the 'Zeitgeist' that corresponds to the paradigm of modern housing.
The vocabulary of modern grand hotels' interior designs reflects western design patterns, showing its nostalgia for modern architecture. And it also contains the trace of past designs implanted by others then, expressing the hardships of Korean history. Like this, the past architectural style distorted under the Japanese imperialistic rule has continued to exist until now without any significant changes, because there has been little effort to figure out the history of modern interior designs. And also there has been the lack of data and aesthetic descriptions about the modern interior designs that contain the historical nature of society. Therefore, this study will review the interior design of modern buildings, which trace back to the fawning of the Korean Interior Design. And it aims to understand the hotel interior's expressive characteristics and historical meanings by paying a particular attention to its lost parts. And it also alms to have a significant meaning in taking the first step toward a clue of the history of Korean modern interiors by systematically putting in order the ever-disappearing materials of modern hotel interiors.
