  • Nailed joints, which are commonly used in Wooden structures, transmit loads from one member to another and induce partial composite actions between members. Long-term loads induce creep slip in nailed joints and affect load sharing and partial composite action, which may reduce joint stiffness. Two theoretical viscous-viscoelastic models were developed for nailed joints to predict creep behavior under long-term variable loads. Those models were also used to predict stiffness changes under long-term variable loads. The stiffness of nailed joint is defined as a Secant modulus which is called the joint modulus or slip modulus. Input data for the models are the results of constant load tests under three different load levels. To verify the models, nailed joints were also tested under two long-term variable load functions. The predictions of the models were very close to the experimental data. Therefore, the theoretical viscous-viscoelastic models and procedures developed in this study can be applied to predict creep slip and the changes in joint moduli of nailed joints under long-term variable loads.

  • When modeling students' conceptual understanding, there are several different frameworks, among which are the alternative conception framework and the mental model framework, which converge to suggest a form of knowledge representation. However, little research has explained how they are different from each other and from memory. The purpose of this study was to develop a new mental model theory that integrates the different terminologies and their background theories, which refer to students' ideas not only in science education, but also in other research areas. For this purpose, at first, we compared different terminologies including alternative conception, p-prim, and mental models, and the underlying theories used for representing students' ideas in learning science. Through such comparison, we tried to find the relationship among them. We reviewed related literature and synthesized the results from both cognitive science (related research areas) and science education approaches, especially, Vosniadou's mental model theory. Based on reviewing previous studies, we have developed a preliminary mental model theory 'an integrated theoretical structure of mental models'. We applied the new mental model theory to interpret data on students' ideas about circular motion from our previous research. We expect our new mental model theory will help us understand how students form their own ideas in science from an integrated perspective.

  • Theoretical models for prediction of the mechanical properties of cement mortar are developed based on the morphology and interactions of cement hydration products, capillary pores and microcracks. The models account for intermolecular interactions involving the nano-scale calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) constituents of hydration products, and consider the effects of capillary pores as well as the microcracks within the hydrated cement paste and at the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). Cement mortar was modeled as a three-phase material composed of hydrated cement paste, fine aggregates and ITZ. The Hashin's bound model was used to predict the elastic modulus of mortar as a three-phase composite. Theoretical evaluation of fracture toughness indicated that the frictional pullout of fine aggregates makes major contribution to the fracture energy of cement mortar. Linear fracture mechanics principles were used to model the tensile strength of mortar. The predictions of theoretical models compared reasonably with empirical values.

  • In this paper, we developed three theoretical models based on prey and predator that exhibit holling-type response functions. In both a fuzzy and a crisp environment, we have provided a mathematical formulation for the prey predator concept. We used the signed distance method to defuzzify the triangular fuzzy numbers using the alpha-cut function. We can identify equilibrium points for all three theoretical models using the defuzzification technique. Utilizing a variational matrix, stability is also performed with the two species model through three theoretical models. Results are presented, followed by discussion. MATLAB software is used to provide numerical simulations.

  • Theoretical models based on modern interpretations of the morphology and interactions of cement hydration products are developed for prediction of the mechanical properties of hydrated cement paste (hcp). The models are based on the emerging nanostructural vision of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) morphology, and account for the intermolecular interactions between nano-scale calcium C-S-H particles. The models also incorporate the effects of capillary porosity and microcracking within hydrated cement paste. The intrinsic modulus of elasticity and tensile strength of hydrated cement paste are determined based on intermolecular interactions between C-S-H nano-particles. Modeling of fracture toughness indicates that frictional pull-out of the micro-scale calcium hydroxide (CH) platelets makes major contributions to the fracture energy of hcp. A tensile strength model was developed for hcp based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics theories. The predicted theoretical models are in reasonable agreements with empirical models developed based on the experimental performance of hcp.

  • To investigate the load bearing capacity of axially preloaded circular hollow section (CHS) stub columns strengthened by carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), theoretical analysis is carried out. The yield strength and the ultimate strength of a CFRP strengthened preloaded CHS stub column are determined at the yielding of the CHS tube and at the CFRP fracture, respectively. Theoretical models are proposed and corresponding equations for calculating the static strengths, including the yield strength and the ultimate strength, are presented. Through comparison with reported experimental results, the theoretical predictions on the static strengths are proved to be accurate. Through finite element (FE) analyses, parametric studies for 258 models of CFRP strengthened preloaded CHS stub columns are conducted by considering different values of tube diameter, tube thickness, CFRP layer and preloading level. The static strengths of the 258 models predicted from presented equations are proved to be in good agreement with FE simulations when the diameter-to-thickness ratio is less than 90ε2. The parametric study indicates that the diameter and the thickness of the steel tube have great effects on CFRP strengthening efficiency, and the recommended ranges of the diameter and the thickness are proposed.

  • The necessity for appropriate management of water resources infrastructures such as reservoirs, levees, and dikes is increasing due to unexpected hydro-climate irregularities and rising water demands. To meet this need, past studies have focused on advancing theoretical optimization algorithms such as nonlinear programming, dynamic programming (DP), and genetic programming. Yet, the optimally derived theoretical solutions are limited to be directly implemented in making release decisions in the real-world systems for a variety of reasons. This study first aims to comparatively analyze the two prominent optimization methods, DP and evolutionary multi-objective direct policy search (EMODPS), under historical inflow series using K-fold cross validation. A total of six optimization models are formed each with a specific formulation. Then, one of the optimization models was coupled with the actual zone-based hedging rule that has been adopted in practice. The proposed methodology was applied to Boryeong Dam located in South Korea with conflicting objectives between supply and demand. As a result, the EMODPS models demonstrated a better performance than the DP models in terms of proximity to the ideal. Moreover, the incorporation of the real-world policy with the optimal solutions improved in all indices in terms of the supply side, while widening the range of the trade-off between frequency and magnitude measured in the sides of demand. The results from this study once again highlight the necessity of closing the gap between the theoretical solutions with the real-world implementable policies.

  • A stress jump, defined as the instantaneous gain or loss of stress on startup or cessation of a deformation, has been predicted by various models and has relatively recently been experimentally observed. In 1993, Liang and Mackay measured shear stress jump data of xanthan gum solutions, and in 1996, Orr and Sridhar reported extensional stress jump data of Boger fluids. Shear stress jumps of suspensions and liquid crystal polymers have also been observed. In this contribution, experimental work as well as a variety of theoretical models, which are able to predict a stress jump, are reviewed.

  • This paper shows the direction in which logistics modellers should make their effort by examining the gap between desirable characteristics which logistics decision models should possess and deficiencies from which existing models suffer. For this purpose, we(1) categorized logistics models into facility planning, inventory management and transportation/delivery planning models, (2) carried out a wide survey of theoretical and industry models within each category and (3) assessed recent development of integrated logistics models.
