  • A computational study has been performed to determine the effects of divergent trailing edge (DTE) modification to a supercritical airfoil in transonic flow field. For this, the computational result with the original DLBA 186 supercritical airfoil was compared to that of the modified DLBA 283. A wavier-Stokes code, Fluent 5. 1, was used with Spalart-Allmaras's one-equation turbulence model. Results in this study showed that the reduction in drag due to the DTE modification is associated with weakened shock and delayed shock appearance. The decrease in drag due to the DTE modification is greater than the increase in base drag. The effect of the recirculating flow region on lift increase was also observed. An airfoil with DTE modification achieved the same lift coefficient at a lower angle of attack while giving a lower drag coefficient. Thus, the lift-to-drag ratio increases in transonic flow conditions compared to the original airfoil. The lift coefficient increases considerably whereas the lift slope increases just a little due to DTE modification.

  • A method of interactive human interface for motion modification of an articulated object model like a human body, a multiple joints robot, etc. has been developed, and implemented to a human body motion model. In the case of computer software models, the initial data setting for overall motion is rather easy. However, modifying or correcting the initially set motion is rather difficult for keeping consistency. In this research, the requirements shown below have mainly been set as the specifications ...

  • The computation of the flow around a supercritical airfoil with a divergent trailing edge(DTE) modification(DLBA 243) is compared to that of original supercritical airfoil(DLBA 186). For this computation, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a linearized block implicit ADI method and a mixing length turbulence model. Results show the effects of the shock and separated flow regions on drag reduction due to DTE modification. Results also show that DTE modification accelerates the boundary layer flow near the trailing edges which has an effect similar to a chordwise extension that increases circulation and is consistent with the calculated increase in the recirculation region in the wake. Airfoil with DTE modification achieves the same lift coefficient at a lower incidence and thus at a lower drag coefficient, so that lift-to-drag ratio is increased in transonic cruise conditions compared to the original airfoil. The reduction in drag due to DTE modification is associated with weakening of shock strength and delay of shock which is greater than the increase in base drag.

  • A modified version of SST turbulence model is suggested to simulate unsteady separated flows over oscillating airfoils. The original SST model, which shows good performance in predicting various steady flows, often results in oscillatory behavior of aerodynamic loads in large separated flow regions. It is shown that this oscillatory behavior is due to the adoption of the absolute value of vorticity in generalizing the original model. As a remedy, a modification is made such that the vorticity in the original SST model is replaced by strain rate. The present model is verified for a mild separated airfoil flow at fixed angle of incidence and for unsteady flowfields about oscillating airfoils. The results are compared with BSL model and original SST model. It is illustrated that the present model gives a better agreement with the experimental results than other two models.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in pre-service chemistry teachers' cognition of the nature of model in the evaluation and modification process of model using technology. Changes in cognition of the nature of model were analyzed focusing on the 'Abstraction' and 'Simplification' of the 'Representational aspect', 'Interpretation', 'Reasoning', 'Explanation' and 'Quantification' of the 'Explanatory aspect' that were deemed insufficient for pre-chemistry teachers in previous study. For this purpose, 19 third-year pre-service chemistry teachers at a teacher's college in Chungcheongbuk-do were asked to evaluate the model related to Boyle's law developed using technology, revise the model based on the evaluation results, and make a final evaluation. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that pre-service chemistry teachers' cognition of 'Simplification' of the 'Representational aspect' and 'Interpretation', 'Explanation', and 'Quantification' of the 'Explanatory aspect' changed positively through the evaluation and modification process of the model. Therefore, it was found that the evaluation and modification process of the model plays a key role in changing the cognition of the nature of model. However, there was little change in cognition of 'Abstraction' of the 'Representational aspect' and 'Reasoning' of the 'Explanatory aspect'. The cognition of these factors can be seen as more difficult to change than the cognition of other factors. To solve this problem, more sophisticated educational design for pre-service chemistry teachers is needed.

  • In dealing with representing knowledge under uncertainty there is a sustain tendency to increase flexibility in order to avoid problems of inconsistency in the knowledge. Many knowledge systems(information retrieval systems, expert system) include hybrid representation models. Funny retrieval systems appear as a complement or as an enrichment of this models. In this paper, we describe dynamic rule modification through situation assessment for uncertainty management.

  • Choosing the most suitable mathematical model and relating this to turbulent tangential tensions model are very important in the investigations of turbulent two-phase flow. This paper considers two-fluid scheme. According to it, two phases have their own densities, velocities, and temperatures at any spatial point and at any moment. The equations of motion and heat transfer for each phase are linked with the forces of interaction between two phases. These forces are considered as predominant for the flow. As a closure in the system of motion equations, one modification of $K - {\epsilon}$ turbulent model is worked out. The modification uses two equations for turbulent kinetic energy of the phases and one - for the turbulent energy loss of main phase. This model can be set as a $K_g - K_p -{\epsilon}$ model. The modified model has been tested for both a two-phase non-isothermal flat jet and axially symmetrical jet. The numerical results are compared with the reference data revealing a good agreement between them.

  • A robust input modification approach to the control of flexible joint robot is presented. In our previous study, we developed an observer based state feedback control for the suppression of residual vibration of a robot. The control was very effective in suppressing the inherent vibration of a flexible joint robot. However it did not meet high performance requirements under high speed motion and model uncertainties. As a solution of the problem, we present an input modification method with robustness against parametric uncertainties. The main idea of the proposed input modification method is to generate a modified reference position command for fast and accurate motion of the robot. Using this proposed method we can reduce the servo delay and settling time by about 60% and substantially improve the path accuracy.

By recognizing that search engines may modify and reorganize search results for some popular keywords, we mathematically model the impact of the degree of modification of search results on the search engine's profit to derive its optimal modification degree. We show how the optimal degree of search result modification may change according to the different shapes of the search engine's advertising revenue function.

  • Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have emerged as a novel functional material that is being increasingly applied in diverse fields including medical, aeronautical and structural engineering to be used in the active, passive and semi-active structural control devices. This paper is mainly aimed at evaluating the ductility and response modification factor of the steel plate shear wall (SPSW) frames with and without the Ni-Ti shape memory alloys. To this end, different configurations were utilized, in which the walls were used in the first, third, middle, and all stories. The models were numerically analyzed using OpenSees Software. The obtained results indicate that improving the shape memory properties of alloys can greatly enhance the ductility and response modification factor. Furthermore, the model whose first and third stories are equipped with the SMA shear wall was found to be 290% more ductile, with a greater response modification factor compared to the unequipped frame.
