  • This study investigates the effectiveness of Building Information Modeling(BIM) software, specifically SketchUp and Revit, in reducing errors during quantity take-off(QTO) for complex building elements. While 3D modeling offers advantages, existing software may not fully account for manufacturing discrepancies, such as variations in concrete cover thickness and reinforcing bar radius. To address this limitation, this research proposes a BIM-based QTO method for high-insulation wall panels with intricate details. The method utilizes a BIM family library, focusing on key parameters like concrete cover thickness and inner radius of shear reinforcement. A case study compared the cross-sectional details of a wall panel modeled in Revit with the actual manufactured specimen. The analysis revealed a 12% reduction in modeled concrete cover thickness and a 1.27 times larger modeled inner radius of the shear bar compared to the real-world values. The proposed method incorporates these manufacturing variations into the Revit model of the high-insulation wall panel. Software like Navisworks facilitates the identification and correction of any material interferences arising from these adjustments. Furthermore, the method employs a unit wall concept(1m2) to account for the volume of various materials, including insulation and splice sleeves at joints. This allows for the identification of a similar existing family within the BIM library(e.g., "Double RC wall with embedded insulation") that reflects the actual material quantities used in the wall panel. By incorporating these manufacturing-induced variations, the proposed method offers a more accurate QTO process for complex high-insulation wall panels. The "Double RC wall with embedded insulation" family within the Revit program serves as a valuable tool for material quantity estimation in such scenarios.

  • Self-directed learning in mathematics education is crucial because it enables students to think creatively and critically while continuously improving. The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of class attitude and class satisfaction in mathematics on the relationship between mathematics teacher characteristics and self-directed learning. Furthermore, the study aimed to determine whether these structural relationships differ between male and female student groups. To achieve this, the theoretical model was tested using the 9th-year data (high school 3rd grade) of the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study (SELS) 2010, comprising 2,325 students (1,187 males and 1,138 females). The results revealed that the mediating effects of mathematics class attitude and class satisfaction on the relationship between teacher characteristics in mathematics and high school students' self-directed learning were significant. At this time, the direct effect of mathematics teacher characteristics on selfdirected learning was not significant, indicating that mathematics class attitude and class satisfaction had full mediating effects. Multi-group analysis results showed no significant differences in path coefficients between male and female student groups. Based on the research findings, implications for teacher education were presented to improve high school students' self-directed learning abilities in mathematics education, focusing on the mediating effects of affective factors in the classroom.

  • This study examined the spectral characteristics of sediments according to moisture content using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based hyperspectral sensor and evaluated the efficiency of moisture content detection at different flight altitudes. For this purpose, hyperspectral images in the 400-1000nm wavelength range were acquired and analyzed at altitudes of 40m and 80m for sediment samples with various moisture contents. The reflectance of the sediments generally showed a decreasing trend as the moisture content increased. Correlation analysis between moisture content and reflectance showed a strong negative correlation (r < -0.8) across the entire 400-900nm range. The moisture content detection model constructed using the Random Forest technique showed detection accuracies of RMSE 2.6%, R2 0.92 at 40m altitude and RMSE 2.2%, R2 0.95 at 80m altitude, confirming that the difference in accuracy between altitudes was minimal. Variable importance analysis revealed that the 600-700nm band played a crucial role in moisture content detection. This study is expected to be utilized in efficient sediment moisture management and natural disaster prediction in the field of environmental monitoring in the future.

  • Many studies have reported that mealworms can ingest plastic during their larval stage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of expanded polystyrene consumption on the growth and development of mealworms during their larval stage. We found that the growth rate is significantly different between mealworms consumed wheat bran and mealworms consumed expanded polystyrene (p < 0.001). The transformation into pupa occurred faster among the mealworms consumed expanded polystyrene than those consumed wheat bran (p < 0.001). However, the survival rate was not significantly different between the two groups of mealworms (p = 0.786). Based on the data, we conclude that mealworms consuming expanded polystyrene have a slower weight gain and a shorter development period than mealworms consuming wheat bran, but the expanded polystyrene does not affect the survival rate before the transformation into pupa. Practically, we anticipate that mealworms can be a resource for the sustainable and eco-friendly removal of expanded polystyrene waste.

  • For traditional spent fuel shielding materials, due to physical and chemical defects and cost constraints, they have been unable to meet the needs. Therefore, this paper carries out the first discussion on the application and performance of bismuth in neutron shielding by establishing Monte Carlo simulation on the neutron flux model of shielded spent fuel. Firstly, functional fillers such as bismuth oxide, lead oxide, boron oxide, gadolinium oxide and tungsten oxide are added to the matrices to compare the shielding rates of aluminum alloy matrix and silicone rubber matrix. The shielding rate of silicone rubber mixture is higher than aluminum alloy mixture, reaching more than 56%. The optimal addition proportion of bismuth oxide and lead oxide is 30%, and the neutron radiation protection efficiency reaches 60%. Then, the mass attenuation coefficients of bismuth oxide, lead oxide, boron oxide, gadolinium oxide and tungsten oxide in silicone rubber matrix are simulated with the change of functional fillers proportion and neutron energy. This simulation result shows that the mixture with functional fillers has good shielding performance for low energy neutrons, but poor shielding effect for high energy neutrons. Finally, in order to further evaluate the possibility of replacing lead oxide with bismuth oxide as shielding material, the half-value layers and various properties of bismuth oxide and lead oxide are compared. The results show that the shielding properties of bismuth oxide and lead oxide are basically the same, and the mechanical properties, heat resistance, radiation resistance and environmental protection of bismuth oxide are better than that of lead oxide. Therefore, in the case of neutron source strengths in the range of 0.01-6 MeV and secondary gamma rays produced below 2.5 MeV, bismuth can replace lead in neutron shielding applications.

  • This study examines the impact of moving to an opportunity-rich area on an individual's wage income to identify the relationship between regional disparities in opportunities throughout a person's life cycle and life outcomes. Based on the Graduate Occupational Mobility Survey (GOMS) provided by the Korea Employment Information Service, individuals with similar life experience prior to regional mobility were selected and analyzed using the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method. Specifically, the life cycle was classified into stages such as pre-high school, university entrance period, and employment period. Then, a path model was established to analyze regional mobility, education, employment, and wage income by life cycle stage. The analysis results indicate that the life cycle stage where regional mobility had the greatest impact on an individual's economic performance, that is, the stage where the impact of opportunity disparities was most unequal, was the university entrance period. Additionally, moving to an opportunity-rich area was a critical factor that cumulatively affected subsequent life. Hence, pre-high school mobility was also noteworthy as it induced life in the central area later on. Lastly, while parental income itself was influential, but when combined with regional mobility, it could act as a means of transferring wealth to the next generation. These results suggest that the state should strive to alleviate the regional imbalance around universities by fostering universities outside the capital region and reduce the possibility of the influence of parents' socio-economic background on regional mobility.

  • In this paper, a real-time public transportation monitoring system is proposed. The proposed system was implemented by developing a public transportation app and utilizing optical sensors, pressure sensors, and an object detection algorithm. Additionally, a bus model was created to verify the system's functionality. The proposed real-time public transportation monitoring system has three key features. First, the app can monitor congestion levels within public transportation by detecting seat occupancy and the total number of passengers based on changes in optical and pressure sensor readings. Second, to prevent errors in the optical sensor that can occur when multiple passengers board or disembark simultaneously, we explored the possibility of using the YOLO object detection algorithm to verify the number of passengers through CCTV footage. Third, convenience is enhanced by displaying occupied seats in different colors on a separate screen. The system also allows users to check their current location, available public transportation options, and remaining time until arrival. Therefore, the proposed system is expected to offer greater convenience to public transportation users.

  • Electrolytes are one of the essential components of a lithium-ion battery. They determine the battery's lifespan and cell characteristics. The dielectric constant is a key thermophysical property for determining how much salt can be dissociated and solvated in a solution. Hence, fast and reliable dielectric constant measurement is essential when formulating an electrolyte solution. This work implemented an open-ended coaxial probe (OECP) station as a quick and reliable tool to measure the complex permittivity spectra of electrolyte solutions. The capability of the OECP station was tested by measuring the complex permittivity of propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), and their mixtures from 0.1 to 8 GHz at 288.15, 298.15, and 308.15 K. The obtained dielectric spectra were then interpreted based on dielectric relaxation models and thermodynamic theories. The measured static dielectric constant data agreed well with the data from previous studies. They were also correlated using the Wang-Anderko thermodynamic model, showing approximately a 1% deviation from the experimental data. In addition, the relaxation characteristics, including the relaxation time and the Cole-Davidson exponent, showed that the microstructure of the solution significantly changes at the propylene carbonate mole fraction of 0.4. These results and methodologies are expected to contribute to the further understanding of electrolyte solutions and ultimately lead to the optimization of electrolyte formulation for lithium-ion batteries.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has affected various aspects of life, particularly affecting the learning, health, psychology, emotions, and daily routines of children and adolescents. The increasing number of counseling sessions related to depression and stress among this demographic highlights the urgent need for effective mental health management. This study investigates current mental care management services and proposes improvements by analyzing the mental health needs of Korean children and adolescents. From an evidence-based administrative perspective, the study examines the current status of emotional management, focusing on data from public institutions such as the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. We propose a three-phase service model: 1) data-driven emotional management services, 2) specialized services for vulnerable children and adolescents, and 3) mydata services for customized emotional management. Additionally, the study reviews relevant legal frameworks and issues, proposing directions for improvement to realize the proposed services. These services and legal considerations are expected to contribute to the effective implementation of emotional management policies for children and adolescents in the future.

  • The fruit of Hippophae rhamnoides has been widely used for medicinal purposes because of its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiplatelet, and antimicrobial effects. Since there are no clear reports on the therapeutic efficacy of H. rhamnoides in osteoporosis, this study aimed to confirm the potential use of H. rhamnoides for the treatment of osteoporosis through its osteogenic differentiation-promoting effect in ovariectomized mice. Through an in vitro study, we compared the effects of the EtOH extract of H. rhamnoides fruits (EHRF) on the differentiation of C3H10T1/2, a mouse mesenchymal stem cell line, into osteoblasts based on alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining and the relative expression of osteogenesis-related mRNAs. The EHRF significantly stimulated the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts and showed 7.5 times (* p < 0.05) higher osteogenesis than in the untreated control. A solvent fractionation process of EHRF showed that the hexane-soluble fraction (HRH) showed 10.4 times (** p < 0.01) higher osteogenesis than in the untreated control. Among the subfractions derived from the active HRH by preparative HPLC fractionation, HRHF4 showed 7.5 times (* p < 0.05) higher osteogenesis than in the untreated naïve cells, and HRH and HRHF4 fractions showed 22.6 times (*** p < 0.001) stronger osteogenesis activity than in the negative control. Osteoporosis was induced by excision of both ovaries in 9-week-old female ICR mice for in vivo analysis, and two active fractions, HRH and HRHF4, were administered orally for three months. During the oral administration period, body weight was measured weekly, and bone mineral density (BMD) and body fat density were measured simultaneously using a DEXA machine once a month. In particular, during the in vivo study, the average BMD of the ovariectomized group decreased by 0.0009 g/cm2, whereas the average BMD of the HRH intake group increased by 0.0033 g/cm2 (* p < 0.05) and that of the HRHF4 intake group increased by 0.0059 g/cm2 (** p < 0.01). The HRH and HRHF4 intake groups significantly recovered the mRNA and protein expression of osteogenic genes, including ALP, Osteopontin, Runx2, and Osterix, in the osteoporosis mouse tibia. These findings suggest that the active fractions of H. rhamnoides fruit significantly promoted osteoblast differentiation in mesenchymal stem cells and increased osteogenic gene expression, resulting in an improvement in bone mineral density in the osteoporosis mouse model. Taken together, H. rhamnoides fruits are promising candidates for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
