  • Rocks are dumped to soft marine ground in order to improve trafficability and construction conditions in the tideland reclamation construction sites. Though this rock layer under earth fill has caused in a serious seepage problems after construction, seepage behaviors of this embankment structure is not correctly investigated. Water flow through rock layers is, in general, known as Non-Darcy's flow. However, the embedded rock layer under earth fill is not known whether its flow is governed by Darcy's or Non-Darcy's law. Therefore, a numerical analysis, laboratory model test and filed investigations were performed for analyzing the those seepage characteristics in this research. Results show that there is significance of $95\%$ of confidence between observed heads and seepage rates, and the calculated ones by SAMTLE which is developed under the assumption that the water flows through the two-layer system obey the Darcy's flow. And after operating the hydraulic gradient(i) of $0.10\~0.55$ upon laboratory model, these seepage characteristics of the embedded rock layer show that Reynolds Numbers are less than 10 and the relationship between these velocities of rock layer(v) and hydraulic gradients(i) is linearly proportional with more than 0.79 of the coefficient of correlation $(R^2)$. And the Reynolds Number of the velocity calculated by the relation of v=ki in the embedded rock layer of OO sea dike is $1\~6$. It shows also laminar flow. Based on these results, it is concluded that the seepage characteristics of embedded rock layer under earth fill can be laminar and Darcy's flow.

  • A series of centrifugal model test was conducted to investigate the distribution of vertical earth pressure on circular ductile underground corrugated steel plate waterway culvert with considering the compaction degree of the backfill in the high landfilled embankment section. The compaction degree of backfill was varied to 80, 85, 90, and 95% at the 53g-level gravity considering the similarity of the site. As a result of this test, the load reduction factor by the arching effect of the top of corrugated steel plate showing ductile behavior nearly agreed with the load reduction factor according to the compaction degree of backfill specified in the AISI(2002) design method. The vertical earth pressure measured at the top of the corrugated steel plate was linearly decreased as the compaction degree increased. The greater the compaction degree of backfill was, the greater the reduction of surface loading on the top of the corrugated steel plate by arching effect. The load decreased by arching effect on top of the corrugated steel plate was transferred to the side backfill of the corrugated steel plate(EP 1) and the outside of backfill(EP 3).

  • The frequency of flash floods in mountainous areas is increasing due to the abnormal weather that occurs increasingly in the recent, and it causes human and material damages is increasing. Various plans for disaster mitigation have been established, but artificial plans such as raising embankment and dredging operation are inappropriate for valleys and rivers in national parks that prioritize nature protection. In this study, flood risk assessment was conducted for Gyeryongsan National Park in Korea using the WMS (Watershed Modeling System)which is rainfall runoff model for valleys and rivers in the catchment. As the result, it was simulated that it is flooding in three sub-catchments (Jusukgol, Sutonggol, Dinghaksa) of a total in Gyeryongsan National Park when rainfall over the 50 years return period occurs, and it was confirmed that the risk of trails and facilities what visitors are using was high. The risk of trails in national parks was quantitatively presented through the results of this study, and we intend to present the safe management guidelines of national parks in the future.

  • According to the "Safety Evaluation Detailed Instructions (Dam)", precise safety inspection is carried out for dams that exceed a certain scale. However, as the Hydrological Safety Evaluation from various evaluation standards is designed to evaluate the safety of existing dams considering PMF, the evaluation is much less applicable for most agricultural reservoirs. Therefore, the Hydrological Safety Guidelines for agricultural reservoirs are expected to be re-evaluated considering the diverse risk factors with the coefficient model and AHP in this study. The coefficient model has been developed by selecting the hydrological safety superordinate subordinate evaluation factors to reflect diverse risk factors of agricultural reservoirs. After calculating the sum of indicators score for each evaluation factors, validation procedures were performed for the questionnaire which a panel answered. The practical coefficient has eventually been estimated for the hydrological safety evaluation considering the diverse risk factors. The conclusions acquired based on the study done are that both most agricultural reservoirs were classified as flood defense capability is insufficient and agricultural reservoirs which meet embankment-freeboard standards considering PMF was overestimated.

  • In this study, a new methodology was proposed to evaluate the flood vulnerability of river levee and to investigate the effect on the levee where the water level changes according to climate change. The stability of levee against seepage was evaluated using SEEP/W model which is two-dimensional groundwater infiltration model. In addition to the infiltration behavior, it is necessary to analyze the vulnerability of the embankment considering the environmental conditions of the river due to climate change. In this study, the levee flood vulnerability index (LFVI) was newly developed by deriving the factors necessary for the analysis of the levee vulnerability. The size of river levee was investigated by selecting the target area. The selected levees were classified into upstream part, midstream part and downstream part at the nearside of Seoul in the Han river, and the safety factor of the levee was analyzed by applying the design flood level of the levee. The safety ratio of the levee was analyzed by applying the design flood level considering the current flood level and the scenario of climate change RCP8.5. The degree of change resulting from climate change was identified for each factor that forms the levee flood vulnerability index. By using the levee flood vulnerability index value utilizing these factors comprehensively, it was finally possible to estimate the vulnerability of levee due to climate change.

  • Both multi-channel temperature monitoring and geophysical electric survey were performed together for an embankment to assess the leakage zone. Temperature variation according to space and time on the inner parts of engineering constructions (e.g.: dam and slope) can be basic information for diagnosing their safety problem. In general, as constructions become superannuated, structural deformation (e.g.: cracks and defects) could be generated by various factors. Seepage or leakage of water through the cracks or defects in old dams will directly cause temperature anomaly. This study shows that the position of seepage or leakage in dam body can be detected by multi-channel temperature monitoring using thermal line sensor. For that matter, diverse temperature monitoring experiments for a leakage physical model were performed in the laboratory. In field application of an old earth fill dam, temperature variations for water depth and for inner parts of boreholes located at downstream slope were measured. Temperature monitoring results for a long time at the bottom of downstream slope of the dam showed the possibility that temperature monitoring can provide the synthetic information about flowing path and quantity of seepage of leakage in dam body. Geophysical data by electrical method are also added to help interpret data.

  • For the purpose of maintenance and prevention of earth fill dams against damage from natural hazards, automatic monitoring through various measuring instruments and resistivity survey has been carried out. Reservoirs and embankments have the structural vulnerability on the agricultural usages since most of them were built more than thirty years ago. The main aim to use monitoring method is to verify the safety and integrity of the dam. Resistivity survey can detect potential weaknesses, such as defective zones, anomalous seepages or internal erosion processes. Permanent resistivity monitoring systems were installed at a reservoir, which daily measurements have been taken every 6 hour. Using monitoring data for one year, anomalous seepage and structural defects were clarified for dam safety. Annual water level fluctuations are around 10 m. During their operation, reservoir dams are subject to a never-ending hydraulic load from the reservoir, which over the years may cause changes in the properties of the inner parts of the dam construction. Detailed analysis of the monitoring results was performed and showed that resistivities at most locations have been very stable over the full monitoring period excluding the effects of water fluctuation and seasons. To investigate the detectability of weak zone using the DC resistivity monitoring, numerical modeling with a simplified model for the drainage at a reservoir dam was also performed. The results showed that the seepage zone near drainage in a reservoir dam could be detected by resistivity response change.

  • This paper described the analysis result on heaving of soft ground with DCM column type, based on the results of laboratory model tests on the soft ground with DCM column. The heave characteristics of the soft ground were evaluated according to the application of DCM column in soft ground. The results showed that the heaving of soft ground without DCM column occurred rapidly when the lateral deformation of soft ground increased significantly under the 4th load step condition. In addition, the heaving of soft ground in final load step caused tensile failure of the ground surface. The maximum heaving of the soft ground with the DCM column occurred in the final load step, and the heaving quantity decreased in the order of pile, wall, and grid type. Especially, the soft ground with DCM of grid type effectively resisted ground heaving, even if it was extremely failure in the bottom ground of embankment. The results of the maximum heaving according to the measurement point showed that the heaving of the soft ground with DCM of grid type was 3.1% and 1.6% compared to that of the pile and wall type at the location of LVDT-1, and the heaving of the LVDT-2 position was 1.0% and 2.1%, respectively.

  • Recently the large scale civil engineering projects are being implemented by reclaiming the sea or utilizing seashore and river embankment areas. The reclaimed land and utilized seashore are mostly soft ground that doesn't have sufficient bearing capacity. This soft ground consists of fine-grained soil such as clayey and silty soils or large void soil like peat or loose sand. It has high ground water table and it may cause the failure and crock of building foundation by uplift pressure and ground water leakage. In this study, the permittivity and the transmissivity were evaluated with the applied normal pressure in the laboratory. The laboratory model tests were conducted by utilizing geocomposite drainage system for draining the water out to release the uplift pressure. The soil used in the laboratory drainage test was dredged soil from the reclaimed land where uplift pressure problems can arise in soil condition. Geocomposite drainage system was installed at the bottom of apparatus and dredged soil was layered with compaction. Subsequently the water pressure was supplied from the top of specimen and the quantities of drainage and the pore water pressure were measured at each step water pressure. The results of laboratory measurements were compared with theoretical values. For the evaluation of propriety of laboratory drainage test, 2-D finite elements analysis that can analyze the distribution and the transferring of pore water pressure was conducted and compared with laboratory test results.
