  • This study (II) has appled the new assessment model of large-diameter pipe deterioration proposed by the study (I) to the metropolitan multi-regional water supply system (1st phase). In the total 30 pipelines, 24 and 27 pipelines were required for improvement as results from the existing evaluation methods 1995 and 2002, respectively. The assessment results were almost similar in the new developed model and the existing methods. It is founded that the new simple model developed in this study can produce reliable results, consistent with those from the existing methods requiring many factors for a pipe deterioration assessment. It is therefore expected that the new model would be helpful in practical applications of a pipe deterioration assessment since it can save both temporal and economic costs for experiments and analysis, as compared with existing assessment methods.

  • Background: Exposure assessment is an important part of risk assessment for consumer products. Exposure models are used when estimating consumer exposures by considering exposure routes, subjects, and circumstances. These models differ based on their tiers, types, and target populations. Consequently, exposure estimates may vary between models. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the results of different exposure models using identical exposure factors. Methods: Chemical exposure from consumer products was calculated using four consumer exposure assessment models: Targeted Risk Assessment 3.1, Consumer Exposure Model 2.1 (CEM), ConsExpo web 1.1.1, and the Korean Exposure Algorithm (primary and detailed) issued by the Ministry of Environment, No. 972 (MOE). The same exposure factors were used in each model to calculate inhalation and dermal exposures to acetaldehyde, d-limonene, and naphthalene in all-purpose cleaners, leather coating sprays, and sealants. Results: In the results, TRA provided the highest estimate. Generally, MOE (detailed), CEM and ConsExpo showed lower exposures. The inhalation exposure for leather coating spray showed the largest differences between models, with differences reaching up to 1.2×107 times. Since identical inputs were used for the calculations, it is likely that the models significantly influenced the estimated results. Conclusions: Despite using the same exposure factors to calculate dermal and inhalation exposures, the results varied substantially based on the model's exposure algorithm. Therefore, selecting an exposure model for assessing consumer products should be done with careful consideration.

  • The aim of this study is to develop elements for assessing safety management capability of construction clients. To this end, it is investigated theoretical concepts of the organizational safety management and successful construction management factors of construction clients. From which, the elements appropriate to assess the safety management capability of the construction clients are proposed. Questionnaire survey targeting construction safety management experts have been carried out to adjust the proposed model more eligible for field application. Finally, relative importance of each element is analyzed using analytic hierarchy process method. The developed model elements are expected to use effectively for assessment of the safety management capability of the clients.

  • Due to increase of interest in web accessibility and recognition of its necessity, a variety of accessibility indicators and automatic assessment tools have been developed, but previous literature indicated various problems about these indicators and tools. Thus, this research proposes and verifies the assessment model for accessibility of a frame content by considering web standards which develop the same web page for every client environment.

  • This study aims to develop the fuzzy risk assessment model of the debris flow to verify the accuracy of risk assessment in order to help related organizations reduce losses caused by landslides. In this study, actual cases of landslides that occurred are utilized as the database. The established models help us assess the occurrence of debris flows using computed indicators, and to verify the model errors. In addition, comparisons are made between the models to determine the best one to use in practical applications. The results prove that the risk assessment model systems are quite suitable for debris flow risk assessment. The reproduction consequences of highlight point discovery are shown in highlight guide coordinating toward discover steady and coordinating component focuses and effectively identified utilizing these two systems, by examining the variety in the distinguished highlights and the element coordinating.

  • The techniques to make assessment of the structural integrity of underground structures include Infrared thermagraphy, GPR using the reflection of the electromagnetic wave, ultrasonic test, seismic methods using the propagation of elastic wave, and etc These methods have pros and cons in the assessment of the structural integrity in the complex environment of the underground structure, so that a single method alone is not enough to evaluate parameters required for the assessment. In this study, a new seismic method was proposed to improve the existing methods and to provide an additional information like stiffness of concrete. The proposed method combines the advantages of the modified impact-echo test and the SASW method. To verify the validity of the proposed method, a large scale model of a tunnel concrete liner was built and the proposed method was applied to the center of the model and also to the corner of the model which has several distinct reflection boundaries.

  • The control system of human torso model and driving system of stethoscope for physical assessment trainer are developed. The detecting characteristics of circular pickup coil which is driven by square wave voltage signal with resonance frequency of LC circuits are investigated and it is confirmed that the pickup coil can detect the existence of chestpiece near the coil region. The control system of human torso model is composed of 8 channel pickup coils, Mp3 and Bluetooth module. The driving system of stethoscope is composed of chestpiece with contact switch and Bluetooth headset. The chestpiece detecting algorithm check the contact of chestpiece with human body model first and excite the pickup coil sequentially to find the location. The proposed system can be applied the physical assessment trainer.

  • Precast-cast insitu concrete bridge construction is widely practiced for small to medium span structures. These bridges consist of precast pre-stressed concrete beams of various cross-sections with a cast in-situ reinforced concrete slab. The connection between the beams and the slab is via shear links often included during the manufacturing process of the beams. This form of construction is attractive as it provides for standardisation, reduced formwork and construction time. The assessment of the integrity of shear connectors in existing bridges is a major challenge. A procedure for assessment of shear connectors based on vibration testing and finite element model updating is proposed. The technique is applied successfully to a scaled model bridge model and an existing bridge structure.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a system dynamics model for the assessment of the organizational and human factors in a nuclear power plant which contribute to nuclear safety. Previous studies can be classified into two major approaches. One is the engineering approach using tools such as ergonomics and Probability Safety Assessment (PSA). The other is the socio-psychology approach. Both have contributed to find organizational and human factors and to present guidelines to lessen human error in plants. However, since these approaches assume that the relationship among factors is independent they do not explain the interactions among the factors or variables in Nuclear Power Plants. To overcome these restrictions, a system dynamics model, which can show cause and effect relationships among factors and quantify the organizational and human factors, has been developed. Handling variables such as the degree of leadership, the number of employees, and workload in each department, users can simulate various situations in nuclear power plant organization. Through simulation, users can get insights to improve safety in plants and to find managerial tools in both organizational and human factors.

  • The perspective on this study assumes that the mathematical modeling activity provides students with the environment which promotes metacognitive thinking. The purposes of this paper are to investigate metacognitive thinking on the mathematical modeling with the result of case study. The study revealed that development of students' model was accompanied with the control and monitoring of modeling activities. Also students refined the model by self-assessment and peer-assessment in small group modeling activities and developed generalizable model.
