Periodic seismic performance evaluation of highway bridges using structural health monitoring system

  • In this study, the periodic seismic performance evaluation scheme is proposed using a structural health monitoring system in terms of seismic fragility. An instrumented highway bridge is used to demonstrate the evaluation procedure involving (1) measuring ambient vibration of a bridge under general vehicle loadings, (2) identifying modal parameters from the measured acceleration data by applying output-only modal identification method, (3) updating a preliminary finite element model (obtained from structural design drawings) with the identified modal parameters using real-coded genetic algorithm, (4) analyzing nonlinear response time histories of the structure under earthquake excitations, and finally (5) developing fragility curves represented by a log-normal distribution function using maximum likelihood estimation. It is found that the seismic fragility of a highway bridge can be updated using extracted modal parameters and can also be monitored further by utilizing the instrumented structural health monitoring system.

  • We propose a new machine learning algorithm which analyzes daily activity patterns of users from multi-modal wearable sensor data. The proposed model learns and extracts activity patterns using input from wearable devices in real-time. Inspired by cue integration of human's property, we constructed gated multi-modal neural networks which integrate wearable sensor input data selectively by using gate modules. For the experiments, sensory data were collected by using multiple wearable devices in restaurant situations. As an experimental result, we first show that the proposed model performs well in terms of prediction accuracy. Then, the possibility to construct a knowledge schema automatically by analyzing the activation patterns in the middle layer of our proposed model is explained.

  • This paper presents an implementation of model checking tool for LTS process specification, which checks deadlock, livelock and reachability for the state and action. The implemented formal checker using modal mu-calculus is able to verify whether properties expressed in modal logic are true on specifications. We prove experimentally that it is powerful to check, safety and liveness for the state and action on LTS. The tool is implemented by $C^{++}$ language and runs on IBM PC under Windows NT.

Modeling and damage detection for cracked I-shaped steel beams

  • This paper presents the results of a study to show how the development of a crack alters the structural behavior of I-shaped steel beams and how this can be used to evaluate nondestructive evaluation techniques. The approach is based on changes in the dynamic behavior. An approximate finite element model for a cracked beam with I-shaped cross-section is developed based on a simplified fracture model. The model is then used to review different damage cases. Damage detection techniques are studied to determine their ability to identify the existence of the crack and to identify its location. The techniques studied are the coordinate modal assurance criterion, the modal flexibility, and the state and the slope arrays.

  • Natural frequencies and mode shapes are two important modal data which specify the system. If the real system and FE model don't have the same local physical parameters, there will be a difference between modal data from real system and FE model. Because there is little difference in displacement mode shapes measured by an accelerometer, displacement modal update based on mode shapes including measurement errors may not be successful.   • An estimation of high-order damping in flexible multibody dynamic simulation is introduced in this paper. The suggested damping model based on the experimental modal analysis leads to more accurate correlation results comparing to the traditional linear damping model because it directly uses the modal parameters of each mode achieved from experiment even high frequency modes. The modal parameters until the 5th mode are extracted from the experimental modal testing of the flexible beam using a high speed camera. And using the measured damping ratio and natural frequency until the 5th mode, the generic damping model is constructed. Then, the ANCF (absolute Nodal Coordinate Formulation) simulation results are compared to experimental results until the 5th mode.

  • In this study, the natural frequencies and mode shape of an external mounting pod were verified using the modal analysis and modal testing technique for a pod mounted on an aircraft. The procedure associated with the FEM building of an external mounted pod to predict the dynamic behavior of aircraft structures is described. The simplified FEM reflecting the results of the modal testing of a pod is built through the optimization, applied to the structural dynamic model of an Aircraft, used to verified the stability of vibration and flutter of an aircraft.

  • A novel concept of feedback loop design for modal test and model updating is proposed. This method uses the closed-loop natural frequency information for parameter modification to overcome the problems associated with the conventional method employing the modal sensitivity matrix. To obtain new modal information from closed-loop system, controllers should be effective in changing modal data while guaranteeing the stability of closed-loop system. But it is very hard to guarantee the stability of the closed-loop system with non-collocated sensor and actuator set. In this research, we proposed a controller called mode-decoupling controller that can change a target mode as much as the designer wants guaranteeing the stability of closed-loop system. This controller can be computed Just using measured open-loop modeshape matrix. A simulation based on time domain input/output data is performed to check the feasibility of proposed control method.

  • In highway bridges robust damage detection exercises are mandatory to secure the safety of the structures from hostile environmental conditions such as fatigue earthquake, wind, and corrosion. This paper presents a damage detection practice in a full-scale highway bridge by utilizing modal response parameters of as-built and damaged states of the structure. first the test structure is described and modal testing procedures are outlined. Next, a damage detection model which yields information on the location of damage directly from changes in mode shapes is outlined. Finally, the damage detection model is implemented to predict the location of damage in the ten structure. From the results, it was found that the damage detection model accurately locates damage in the test structures for which modal parameters of only a single mode are available for pre-damage (as-built) and post-damage stages.

Modal Analysis for the Rotating Cantilever Beam with a Tip Mass Considering the Geometric Nonlinearity (기하학적 비선형성을 고려한 종단 질량을 갖는 회전하는 외팔보의 모달 분석)

  • In this paper, a new dynamic model for modal analysis of a rotating cantilever beam with a tip-mass is developed. The nonlinear strain such as von Karman type and the corresponding linearized stress are used to consider the geometric nonlinearity, and Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is applied in the present model. The nonlinear equations of motion and the associated boundary conditions which include the inertia of the tip-mass are derived through Hamilton's principle. In order to investigate modal characteristics of the present model, the linearized equations of motion in the neighborhood of the equilibrium position are obtained by using perturbation technique to the nonlinear equations. Since the effect of the tip-mass is considered to the boundary condition of the flexible beam, weak forms are used to discretize the linearized equations. Compared with equations related to stiffening effect due to centrifugal force of the present and the previous model, the present model predicts the dynamic characteristic more precisely than the another model. As a result, the difference of natural frequencies loci between two models become larger as the rotating speed increases. In addition, we observed that the mode veering phenomenon occurs at the certain rotating speed.
