  • The hermetic rotary compressor is one of the most important components of an air conditioning system since it has a great effect on both the performance and the noise and vibration of the system. Noise and vibration occurs due to gas pulsation during the compression process and to unbalanced dynamic force. In order to reduce noise and vibration, it is necessary to identify their sources and transmission path and effectively control them. Many approaches have been tried in order to identify the noise transmission path of a compressor. However, identification has proven to be difficult since the characteristics of compressor noise are complicated due to the interaction of the compressor parts and gas pulsation. In this study, the statistical energy analysis has been used to trace the energy flow in the compressor and to identify the transmission paths from the noise source to the exterior sound field.

  • A double cantilever sandwich-beam method has been applied to the evaluation of the frequency dependence of dynamic elastic modulus and material loss factor of EPDM rubbers. The flexural vibration of a double cantilever sandwich-beam specimen with an inserted rubber layer was studied using a finite element simulation in combination with the sine-sweep test. Effects of the rubber layer length on the dynamic characteristics were also investigated: reliable values were measured when the length of the inserted rubber layer was larger than and equal to 50% of the effective specimen length. The values were compared with those obtained by the dynamic mechanical analysis and the simple resonant test. Relationships of the dynamic characteristics of rubbers with frequency could be determined using the least square error method.

  • Length of an unconstrained viscoelastic damping layer on beams is determined to maximizeloss factor using a numerical search method. The fractional derivative model can describe damping characteristics of viscoelastic damping materials accurately, and is used to represent nonlinearity of complex modulus with frequencies and temperatures. Equivalent flexural rigidity of the unconstrained beam is obtained using Ross, Ungar, Kelvin[RUK] equation. The loss factors of partially covered unconstrained beam are calculated by a modal strain energy method. Optimal lengths of the unconstrained viscoelastic damping layer of beams are identified with ambient temperatures and thickness ratios of beam and damping layer by using a finite-difference-based steepest descent method.

  • Interior parts of a vehicle are getting important to reduce interior noise. Therefore, prior analysis of cabin noise related with interior parts are necessary at first design stage. Recently, Statistical Energy Analysis(SEA) has been suggested as a possible way for high frequency range noise analysis of interior parts. The validity of noise analysis with SEA to interior parts has been preyed by comparing with experimental result, and the developed method with SEA has been applied in finding optimized interior parts package.

  • Two types of bolted lap joints, one with a viscoelastic layer and the other without the viscoelastic layer were chosen to analyze the dynamic characteristics of the joints with the mechanical properties of the bolts in the joints are considered as computational variables. The finite element method was used along with the modal testing to verify the PEM model. The results in the bolted lap joints reveal that the higher the Young's modulus for the bolts we use the higher the natural frequencies we obtain fur the joints. However, the natural frequency differences in the first and second mode are not substantial but become noticeable in the higher modes. Lower natural frequencies were obtained for the bolted lap joints with the viscoelastic layer when compared with those of the bolted lap joints without the viscoelastic layer. And the differences in the natural frequencies for the two types of joints are relatively small in the first and second mode whereas in the higher mode the differences become significant. The loss factors were observed to be significant especially in the second mode for the bolted lap joints with the viscoelastic layer.

  • The frequency response functions and loss factors, $\eta$, of structurally hollowed, rectangular, metal cantilever beams have been measured in bending vibrations within low strain amplitudes. The beams were heat treated or fined with aluminum to vary the material conditions. The measured frequency response functions at the end of the cantilevered beam were processed to calculate the structural damping ratios. The results showed that the modal frequencies and damping ratios of heat treated beam are increased due to the increase of beam rigidity with the predictions of the classical beam theory. When the beams are fined with aluminum, however, the frequencies are decreased due to the increase of mass, while the damping ratios are increased. As the agreement between measurement and classical theory is good, the performance of a beam with heat treated or fined with dissimilar material can be duplicated, for industrial and most practical purposes, by the theory developed for an internally damped homogeneous beam.

  • The radiation of sound from a rectangular plate with a guided edge condition is investigated. By taking this particular boundary condition into account, simple analytical forms of the average radiation efficiency and radiation power based on the modal approach can be found, where the cross-modal terms can average out for all possible point excitation locations. Design variables of the plate such as thickness, aspect ratio, and damping that are closely related to the sound radiation are mainly discussed. The radiation power of the guided plate is found to be governed by the piston mode as well as the critical frequency. While both the radiation efficiency and the radiation power seem to be influenced by thickness and a large aspect ratio, damping loss factor seems less important to the radiation power. It is also shown that no clear corner and edge mode regions may be found for the guided case, unlike the pinned.
