  • The purpose of this study was to empirically analyze relations between color changes in the product specification and demand changes with price elasticity in the Chinese mobile phone market. In previous studies on price elasticity, the usual analysis units were product categories or SBU within a given product category. Unlike them, the this study set an analysis unit of price elasticity to focus on colors, which are investigated in the research fields of experiential marketing, aesthetic marketing, and cognitive psychology. Actual sales data according to the mobile phone price changes by the color were based on the sales volume of a sales agency at China's largest B2C site. The findings were as follows: first, price elasticity according to the six colors was higher than the absolute value of 1, which means that demands made flexible reactions to price changes. Secondly, there were differences in price elasticity according to the colors. Aroma white color made the smallest increase in sales volume at the same price discount, whereas diamond color made the biggest increase in sales in the same price discount scope. These findings indicate that more profit can be generated in mobile phone sales in China by setting different price discount or increase rates according to colors or producing different amounts of mobile phones according to colors. Distributors or sales agents can have a chance for higher profit by ordering and selling mobile phones in certain colors than others from mobile phone manufacturers. The academic findings indicates that there are differences in preference and price elasticity according to colors under the mobile phone category in the Chinese market, which means that the present study made an academic contribution by proposing a microscopic analysis unit for product price elasticity and expanding its concept.

  • Among high-tech products, the mobile phone has experienced a rapid rate of innovation and a shortening of its product life cycle. The shortened product life cycle poses major challenges to those involved in the creation of forecasting methods fundamental to strategic management and planning systems. This study examined whether the best model applies to the entire diffusion life span of a mobile phone. Mobile phone sales data from a specific mobile service provider in Korea from March of 2013 to August of 2014 were analyzed to compare the performance of two S-shaped diffusion models and two non-linear regression models, the Gompertz, logistic, Michaelis-Menten, and logarithmic models. The experimental results indicated that the logistic model outperforms the other three models over the fitted region of the diffusion. For forecasting, the logistic model outperformed the Gompertz model for the period prior to diffusion saturation, whereas the Gompertz model was superior after saturation approaches. This analysis may help those estimate the potential mobile phone market size and perform inventory and order management of mobile phones.

  • The development of mobile communication technology is transforming the market of mobile communication devices, which is used to be merely for simple communication, into the one which offers features of personal digital assistant (PDA), fax communication and Internet access. Unlike a mobile phone which comes out as a complete package and whose functions cannot be changed, a smart phone can be upgraded by its user, adding or removing apps as he pleases. OS's of smart phones are iOS-based Apple, Google Android, Window Mobile, and others. Due to its convenience and powerful features, many people use smart phones its high price. On the other hand, consumer complaints are rising on poor A/S for occasional malfunction. This study analyzes how A/S cases can be classified into groups according to quality factors. We evaluate factors such as consumer impression and consumer satisfaction. By dual quality evaluation using KANO method, we would like to show the different A/S strategy for smart phones, compared with mobile phones.

  • The purpose of this study is to demonstrate empirically whether replacement intervals of mobile phones sold in China online B2C are influenced by purchase points such as holidays. If there is a holiday effect, it is expected that the product replacement interval or interpurchase interval will be short compared to the usual one at holiday time. In order to verify this positively, at TMall, one of the largest B2C sites in China, we explored 5,132 replacement cycle intervals and the point of purchase at which one of the sales records of an agent dealing with all multinational mobile phones had minimum two purchase records. As a result, there was a buyer who had shorter replacement period than usual in holiday season. There was no statistically significant difference in the intervals of interchange between holidays. Based on the results, it was found that the mobile phone vendors were aware that purchasing was occurring due to the holiday.

  • Purpose - Most of the amendments to the law on the improvement of the distribution structure of mobile communication terminal equipment, the fully self-sufficient system of terminals, and the separated disclosure system on the terminals are aimed at securing transparency of the distribution structure by eliminating or reducing handset subsidies. This study investigates what items are important for the purchase of mobile phones in various and rapidly changing mobile phone markets from the consumer's point of view and tries to make a strategic suggestion for future mobile distribution strategies. Research design, data, and methodology - The procedure of this study takes place in four steps. In step 1, only the SF type respondents selected for this study were extracted through MBTI analysis. In step 2, they were divided into three hierarchies for the AHP analysis and each element was arranged. In step 3, the AHP analysis was converted to a Fuzzy-AHP number using the trigonometric centroid method. This was to eliminate the ambiguity of the response by converting into a fuzzy number even if data consistency was maintained with CI value below 0.1. In step 4, the number of converted 2-layer and 3-layer was combined to derive the priority when the final handset is selected. Results - First, the highest importance among the four items in the second tier was the terminal function item, followed by brand, price, and design item. Second, in the third tier, the highest importance was level of after-sales service, followed by device price, processing speed, ease of use, usefulness, and rate system. Third, the arithmetic average of the determinant of the fuzzy function showed that processing speed, ease of use and usefulness in the function item, level of after-sales service in the brand item, and device price in the price item were the five most important factors among 16 choice factors. Conclusions - First, there will be a change in the consumption patterns of consumers who have compared distributors and dealers to purchase handsets with more subsidies. Second, it is highly likely that people will purchase new handsets only when they need to change their devices because they can not receive subsidies by switching phone brands any more.
