  • In this paper, the frequency reconfigurable antenna is proposed and designed. The proposed antenna is designed using the vertically stacked dipole structures and have the operating band for Cellular, PCS/WCDMA/Wibro/WiFi and WiMAX. The operating frequency band is selected by three pair of PIN diodes using the voltage difference between each dipole antenna and feeding transmission lines. The proposed antenna meets the required operating bandwidth and the maximum gain for each frequency band are measured as 6.3 dBi, 5.4 dBi and 5.8 dBi, respectively. The proposed antenna in this paper can be applied for the future mobile small base station or repeater antenna because this antenna can provide the small size and high gain features.

  • The market performance of WiBro in Korea has not been as expected, and its rapid diffusion in the near future is unlikely owing to the existence of competing services. There has been little research on the factors affecting this low market diffusion. This study is based on an analytical framework in which a lack of service capability and the insufficiency of service-related activities have resulted in the current poor market performance. An expert survey was conducted on WiBro specialists and verified using the analytical hierarchy process method. The result of this analysis is as follows: underinvestment in network deployment and marketing, insufficient promotional policies, and a shortage of service capabilities are to be analyzed as the main causes of WiBro's low market diffusion.

  • Recently, wireless mesh network has been focused as a core technology for resolving the issues of shadow zone and distributed bypass route as it has broad service coverage as well as good scalability features. It, however, provides users with relatively lower QoS than infrastructure-based networks. In order for addressing this QoS issue and also enhancing the routing performance of mobile WiMax mesh network, this paper proposes a load sensing QoS routing (LSQR) scheme. In the proposed LSQR, each node figures out network congestion status and selects a bypass route accordingly. With this scheme, we can expect good load balancing effect by changing the routing paths from centralized links to distributed links under a heavy traffic condition. From the simulation results using NS-2, it has been verified that the LSQR shows lower packet loss rates and data transmission delays than the existing representative routing schemes.

  • Geo-location using a cellular network is a core technology for LBS together with GPS. With preamble symbols broadcasted in each frame, geo-location using WiBro network can be easily implemented. Because the WiBro network has a cellular structure, it is difficult for a mobile station to detect signals from multiple base stations. In order to get user position using trilateration, long integration techniques for sensitivity enhancement should be employed. This paper presents hybrid integration scheme for WiBro network. By analyzing coherent and non-coherent integration loss according to frequency residual and SNR respectively, optimal combination of the hybrid integration is proposed. Simulation results show that the hybrid integration method is profitable in WiBro network when the frequency residual is estimated and compensated accurately.

  • In this paper, estimation methods of cell searching and DoA (Direction of Arrival) for mobile relay stations with a uniform linear array are proposed. The proposed methods can improve the performance of cell searching and DoA estimation by removing the effect of STOs when there exist symbol timing offsets (STOs) between the signals received from adjacent base stations,. Also, the proposed methods can improve the performance of DoA estimation significantly when there exists Doppler frequency shift caused by movement of the mobile relay station. The performances and computational complexities of the proposed cell searching and DoA methods are evaluated by computer simulation under Mobile WiMAX environments.

  • In this paper, we studied a ZnO-based film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) device fabricated on top of a novel multi-layered Bragg reflector with chromium adhesion layers $(0.03{\mu}m-thick)$ inserted. The performance of FBAR device could be significantly improved using proper thermal treatments. At ${\sim}2.75$ GHz, we could achieve good return loss and quality factor (Q). This device fabrication technique will be useful for the future mobile WiMAX applications.

  • This paper presents the implementation and performance test of a Digital IF transceiver for a SDR-based mobile communication base station. The transceiver is reconfigurable to HSDPA and to three profiles, 7 MHz, 3.5 MHz, and 1.75 MHz, each incorporating the IEEE 802.16d WiMAX standard. The transceiver can be reconfigured to other standard profiles through software downloaded onto identical hardware platforms. Experimental results show that the transceiver can be reconfigured to other systems and the performance of the transceiver satisfies the recommended performance criteria of each standard.
