  • In recent times, as most people develop keen interest in health management, the importance of cultivating dietary habits to prevent various chronic diseases is emphasized. Subsequently, dietary management systems using a variety of mobile and web application interfaces have emerged. However, these systems are difficult to apply in real world and also do not provide personalized information reflective of the user's situation. Hence it is necessary to develop a personalized dietary management and recommendation method that considers user's body state information, food analysis and other essential statistics. In this paper, we analyze nutrition using self-organizing map (SOM) and prepare data about nutrition using clustering. We provide a substitute food recommendation method and also give feedback about the food that user wants to eat based on personalized criteria. The experiment results show that the distance between input food and recommended food of the proposed method is short compared to the recommended food results using general methods and proved that nutritional similar food is recommended.

  • Advanced wireless network and sensor technologies are capable of collecting information such as temperature, humidity, weight, and location about objects at real time in logistics area. Besides, users want to be notified of contextual information about interest of objects whenever they want it and wherever they want it. To satisfy these requirements, applications should collect and analyze contextual information at real time, and must support a service that can notify it to wanted users. Event-based service is one of the way to satisfy these requirement of users. In this paper, we design an event notification system focused on location- and RFID-based logistics area. To do this, we present XML-based event expression model, ECA-based profile definition model, and an algorithm that has high scalability by distinguishing event filtering in two steps. Based on these designs, our implemented system can apply to not only logistics area but also intelligent traffic control system based on RFID or GPS devices.

  • The mobility or highly interconnected and communicating devices and users has implications for the QoS in a ubiquitous computing environment. Therefore, it is important for location aware systems to detect location of mobile object correctly and Provide high quality services in ubiquitous environment. However, it is not easy that location aware systems offer highly reliable QoS to users because process strategies of location aware systems are limited by the capability according to the applied detection target objects. In this paper, we design an autonomic architecture which analyzes the location aware system condition and autonomously chooses the best appropriate process strategy. We also have simulated the Proposed architecture in order to verify its performance. The test results show us that the architecture using self-optimizing mechanism provides higher QoS to users in variable bandwidth.

  • It it essential to get the exact location information of products for a warehouse management. It is very hard, however, to know the location of products which change their location in warehouse frequently This causes the effective warehouse management to be almost impossible. In this paper, we suggest a new location management system for such a SKU(Stock Keeping Unit) with high mobility. The system is composed of RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification), a management terminal with wireless LAN, mobile devices (Cellular Phone & PDA), and a central management system. As a model of a SKU with high mobility, we selected a used-car stored in a large-scale warehouse. We designed and implanted used-car location management system. After analyzing the operations of each position in used-car warehouse where the system will run, we implemented each function. This research shows that an embedded system with wireless LAN is able to know the status of coming in and cut and location of a SKU with high mobility in warehouse very accurately in real time. Therefore, it makes the warehouse to be controlled systematically.

  • This study aims to develop a plastic aspheric lens for a 13-megapixel mobile phone camera by injection-compression molding. A mold for injection-compression molding experiments was fabricated with a movable upper plate and four springs. During cavity filling for an aspheric lens with a thickness ratio of 2, a weldline was formed under conventional injection molding, whereas no weldline was formed under injection-compression molding with a compression stroke of 0.3 mm. The flow patterns were in good agreement with the simulation results. The birefringence decreased as the compression stroke increased, and the birefringence produced by injection-compression molding was very low and more uniform compared with that produced by injection molding. In addition, the bulk birefringence of an assembly composed of four plastic lenses was significantly affected by the orientation of the lenses to be mounted.

  • Device-to-device (D2D) communication is an excellent technology to improve the system capacity by sharing the spectrum resources of cellular networks. Multicast service is considered as an effective transmission mode for the future mobile social contact services. Therefore, multicast based on D2D technology can exactly improve the spectrum resource efficiency. How to apply D2D technology to support multicast service is a new issue. In this paper, a resource allocation scheme based on cognitive radio (CR) for D2D underlay multicast communication (CR-DUM) is proposed to improve system performance. In the cognitive cellular system, the D2D users as secondary users employing multicast service form a group and reuse the cellular resources to accomplish a multicast transmission. The proposed scheme includes two steps. First, a channel allocation rule aiming to reduce the interference from cellular networks to receivers in D2D multicast group is proposed. Next, to maximize the total system throughput under the condition of interference and noise impairment, we formulate an optimal transmission power allocation jointly for the cellular and D2D multicast communications. Based on the channel allocation, optimal power solution is in a closed form and achieved by searching from a finite set and the interference between cellular and D2D multicast communication is coordinated. The simulation results show that the proposed method can not only ensure the quality of services (QoS), but also improve the system throughput.

  • ITU-R M.1842-1, as a well-known specification dedicated to maritime mobile applications, has standardized wireless transmission protocols according to the particular characteristics of a maritime communications scenario. A time division multiple access (TDMA) frame structure, along with modulation schemes to achieve a high data rate, has been described clearly in ITU-R M.1842-1. However, several specification items are still under "to be decided" status, which brings ambiguity to research works. In addition, the current version of ITU-R M.1842-1 is focused mainly on maritime transmissions in open-sea areas, where the cyclic prefix (CP) is set to zero and only 16-QAM is used in the multi-carrier (MC) system. System performance might be dramatically degraded in coastline areas due to the inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by selective fading. This is because there is a higher probability that the signal will be reflected by obstacles in coastline areas. In this paper, we introduce the transmission resource block (TRB) dedicated to ITU-R M.1842-1 for a ship ad-hoc network (SANET), where the pilot pattern of TRB is based on the terrestrial trunked radio (TETRA). After that, we evaluated SANET performance under the maritime channel model in a coastline area. In order to avoid noise amplification and to overcome the ISI caused by selective fading, several strategies are suggested and compared in the channel estimation and equalization procedures, where the link-level simulation results finally validate our proposals.

  • Ships built today are larger in scale and feature more complex structures. The ever-evolving systems used on board a ship require vast amounts of data processing. In the future, with the advent of smart ships, unmanned ships and other next-generation ships, the volumes of data to be processed will continue to increase. Yet, to date, ship data has been processed using wired networks. Placed at fixed locations, the nodes on wired networks often fail to process data from mobile devices. Despite many attempts made to use Wi-Fi on ships just as on land to create wireless networks, Wi-Fi has hardly been available due to the complex metal structures of ships. Therefore, Wi-Fi on ships has been patchy as the ship-wide total Wi-Fi coverage has not properly implemented. A new ship-wide wireless network environment is part of the technology conducive to the shipbuilding industry. The wireless network environment should not only serve the purpose of communication but also be able to manage and control multiple features in real-time: fault diagnostics, tracking, accident prevention and safety management. To better understand the characteristics of wireless frequencies for ships, this paper tests the widely used TETRA, UHF and Wi-Fi and sheds light on the features, advantages and disadvantages of each technology in ship settings. The proposed deployment of a Super Wi-Fi network leveraging the legacy UHF system of TMS generates a ship-wide wireless network environment. The experimental findings corroborate the feasibility of the proposed ship-wide Super Wi-Fi network environment.

  • This paper addresses the design and implementation of an Android application for real-time precise motion control. To provide stable real-time performance, we implemented the application in two parts: Android service in the form of a daemon process, which periodically transfers a set of position commands for all motors through a real-time fieldbus, and Android UI application, which generates and delivers the set of position commands to the Android service. To support such a real-time motion control application, we use multi-core partitioning, which partitions the processor cores into a real-time partition to be used by the real-time motion control service and a non-real-time partition to be used by the Android application, and set up a shared buffer between them for communication. Our experiments show that we can obtain a motion control period of 2 ms with 99% task activation jitters less than ${\pm}55{\mu}s$ for a configuration where each of the four threads controls two motors in a group.

  • We propose a low cost attendance checking system using NFC (Near Field Communication) and show a case study of an actual operation of the system in a higher education institute. The system offers a direct attendance check service when a student touches NFC tag on a classroom desk with his/her own smartphone. Our service was first developed and operated in 2012, and then additional functions like massive real time processing were reinforced. In the fall semester, 58 courses use the service and 96% of the class attendance was checked with mobile devices. The only hardware requirement of the system was NFC tag on the classroom desk, which reduced hardware cost dramatically. However, it also minimized attendance checking time into 1 minute regardless of enrolled student number.
