Purpose - The propose of this study is to examine the effect of human development index on mobile telephony diffusion. Design/methodology/approach - This study fits the modidensity of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries with an econometric Gompertz growth model. The diffusion factors, including the human development index (HDI), gross domestic product (nominal) per capita, fixed-line telephony subscription, and population data of each member country from 2005 to 2018 are considered for the empirical experiment. Furthermore, the mobidensity of randomly sampled countries with very high human development scores (the Republic of Korea, Switzerland and Norway) and high development scores (Brazil and Costa Rica) have been examined with the same process as SAARC members. Findings - We have found a positive but insignificant relationship between the HDI value and mobile telephony diffusion in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Pakistan; a positive and statistically significant relationship at a 99% confidence level in SriLanka; and a negative and insignificant relationship in the Maldives and Nepal. HDI has both positive and negative effects on mobile telephony diffusion, with the nature of effect depending on the profiles of each country. HDI is a diffusion determinant of mobile telephony only for the high human development country groups. Research implications or Originality - This study provides a reference for policymakers, telecommunication stakeholders, and future researchers to design the telecommunication policies and strategies.

영상통화는 3G 이동통신망에서 가장 대표적인 서비스이며, 많은 여러 분야에서 영상통화의 품질을 향상시키기 위한 노력이 있다. 국내에서도 SKT와 KTF에서 3G와 3.5G망으로 WCDMA 방식을 채택해 전국서비스를 시작하였고, 이미 백만 명 이상의 많은 사용자를 확보한 상태이다. 본 논문에서는 WCDMA 망에서의 영상통화방법에 대해 알아보고, 영상품질을 향상시키기 위해 회선망의 물리계층 정보를 이용하여 영상코덱에서 손실확산을 최소화 할 수 있는 슬라이스 그룹을 만드는 새로운 전송기법에 대해 제안하고 실험을 통해 성능을 평가해 보았다. 실험결과, 기존의 방법들보다 좀 더 회선 망과 영상코덱 사이의 동기화가 잘 이루어지고, 이를 통해 손실의 확산을 줄일 수 있는 결과를 보여준다.

현대의 소프트웨어공학 관련 연구 중에서, 산업계가 궁극적으로 추구하는 수준의 생산성을 제공할 수 있는 기술은 아마도 프로덕트라인 공학이 될 것이다. 지금까지의 소프트웨어공학 기술로는 소프트웨어 개발 분야에 프로덕트라인 기법을 실질적이고 실용적으로 적용하기에는 아직 충분히 성숙하지 못한 것이 사실이다. 본 논문에서는 저자가 산업체에서 접한 과거 3년 동안의 PDA 스마트폰 개발 경험을 바탕으로 실용적 수준의 프로덕트라인 기법을 Model-Driven Architecture(MDA) 접근 방법을 통해 제안한다. 이동 단말 시스템의 경우 단말기 제조사, 목적 사용자 층, 이동 단말 사업자 등에 따라 다양한 형태의 소프트웨어가 존재한다. 특히, 최근에는 단말기 사용자가 직접 느낄 수 있는 지원 기능 구성 및 인터페이스 형식은 매우 다양한 형태가 존재하며, 같은 제조사에 시리즈 제품으로 개발하더라도 이 부분에 대한 변이성이 매우 큰 특징이 있다. 하지만, 전형적인 폰 관련 기능 모듈 즉, 음성호 및 화상전화 기능, 메시지, 주소록, 데이터통신, 카메라 및 멀티미디어 기능, 웹 브라우징 과 같은 큰 기능 묶음에 대한 피처(Feature)들은 자체의 다양한 기능적 요구사항과 함께 피처 간 상호 연관성을 크고 다양한 형태로 구성될 수 있는 특성이 있다. 본 논문에서는 이동 단말기에서 구현해야 하는 다양한 형태의 사용자 소프트웨어의 요구사항에 대해 사용 시나리오 상에서 구분 가능하고 의미 있는 장면의 연속 관계로 정의하여 추후 설계, 구현, 시험 단계에서도 소프트웨어 아키텍쳐 역할을 할 수 있는 개발 기법을 제안한다. 따라서, 요구분석 단계에서도 사용자 인터페이스 관점에서 전반적인 소프트웨어 아키텍쳐에 대해 검증할 수 있게 될 뿐만 아니라 소프트웨어 개발 주기 전 과정에서 그 구조를 사용자 인터페이스 관점에서 유지, 관리 할 수 있는 핵심적인 방법을 제공한다.

스마트폰을 이용한 모바일 인터넷 전화 서비스의 사용이 급속도로 확산되고 있다. 기존의 전화망이나 이동 전화망을 통한 전화 서비스와는 달리 인터넷 전화는 서비스 품질이 보장될 수 없다는 문제점이 있고 특히 무선 환경을 통한 모바일 인터넷 전화 서비스의 경우 이 문제점은 더 심각해 질 수 있다. 따라서 모바일 인터넷 전화의 성공적인 정착과 활성화를 위해서는 보다 체계화된 철저한 품질 관리가 요구된다. 기존의 계측기를 이용한 측정 기반의 사후 품질 관리를 개선하기 위해서 본 논문에서는 서비스 이용자 단말에 설치되어 각종 품질 지표를 측정할 수 있는 소프트웨어를 개발하였다. 개발된 소프트웨어를 이용하면 모바일 음성 서비스의 품질을 상시적인 그리고 서비스 이용자의 능동적인 품질 측정이 가능하다는 장점이 있다.

3G 통신 기술의 상용화로 모바일 단말기 상에서 영상통화 서비스가 활발히 제공되고 있다. 하지만, 단말기 상에서 비디오 시스템은 안정성과 성능 면에서 사용자들의 요구를 충족시키지 못하고 있으며, 이 때문에 영상통화 서비스에 대한 사용자들의 불만이 증가하는 것이 현 실정이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 기존의 제한된 모바일 영상통화 환경에서 향상된 품질의 영상통화 서비스를 제공하기 위한 비디오 압축 방법을 제안한다. 제안한 방법에서는 매 프레임마다 중요 객체와 비중요 객체를 분리하며, 분리된 객체는 다른 비트율과 화질을 갖도록 각 객체에 적합한 변환 커널을 적용하여 부호화 절차를 달리한다. 중요 객체는 고화질을 가지도록 부호화하며, 비중요 객체에 대해서는 저화질을 가지도록 부호화함으로써 제한된 대역폭 내에서 중요 객체에 대한 화질을 보장하도록 한다. 실험 결과에서 동일 비트율에서 제안한 방법이 기존 방법보다 중요객체 영역에 대한 화질이 우수한 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

스마트폰의 등장으로 모바일 인터넷 전화 서비스의 보급이 활발하게 이루어지고 있는데 반하여 이의 품질 관리 체계에 대한 대비는 상대적으로 미흡한 상황이다. 향후 모바일 인터넷 전화 서비스가 성공적으로 정착되어 활성화되기 위해서는 철저한 품질 관리가 요구되는데 전통적인 계측기를 이용하는 방법으로는 실시간 모니터링이 불가능함으로 인한 여러 가지 한계점이 발생할 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 모바일 인터넷 전화의 예방적인 서비스 품질 관리 체계를 제안하고 이의 구현을 위한 소프트웨어를 개발하였다. 상용 소프트웨어와의 비교를 통한 개발된 소프트웨어의 검증을 위한 시험 절차가 진행되었고 시험 결과 개발된 소프트웨어의 측정 결과가 상당히 신뢰할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

The purpose of this research is to identify the critical factors influencing on the continuous use of video telephony service for mobile devices. An empirical analysis has been performed by using service quality, brand image, price, fun as influencing factors, and satisfaction and commitment as mediating factors. The partial least squares(PLS) methodology with 228 questionnaires has been conducted. The results indicated that brand image, price, and fun were mediated by satisfaction and commitment to have a statistically significant influence on continuous use of video telephony service. Service quality showed a significant effect on continuous use mediated by satisfaction while it did not show any influence through commitment. Based on the results, companies in the communication service industry should consider and focus on the improved brand image, appropriate fees, and individual preferences for fun for the successful marketing activities, and should also maintain amicable relations with their customers.

In the process of a mobile network evolution to the All-IP, it is inevitable to experience a transient period embracing both circuit and packet based data traffics. At the stage of those hybrid networks, it is important to build them in an efficient manner in terms of resource utilization which is closely related to the overall system operation cost. Especially, the multimedia telephony is one of the essential services in the advanced packet based mobile networks. In this paper an effective method of system operation is proposed for building up the multimedia telephony service while the legacy network co-exists. The proposed solution is based on the careful investigation of the usage pattern of the multimedia services in the evolving networks. This method is also expected to be a useful guideline for the network resource planning.

Korean telecommunications industry has a large scale market and boasts on high service quality and high technologies enough to provide the mobile video telephony service(the VTS) satisfactorily. For many years, Korean telecommunications companies have been investing enormous amount of money to advertise their VTS widely and to allow their customers to change their cell phones for the 3G(the third generation) devices indispensable for the VTS. However, despite their efforts, the VTS adoption rate in Korea is very low as of January, 2010 and it seems that customers seldom feel the necessity to use. From this viewpoint, it becomes necessary to identify antecedents influencing the intention to use for the VTS empirically. For this purpose, we have proposed several hypotheses from the perspective of the Value-based Adoption Model(VAM). We conducted a survey and found the several factors which influence the value perception of VTS.

With advent of 3G mobile communication services, video telephony becomes one of the major services. However, due to a narrow channel bandwidth, the current video telephony services have not yet reached a satisfied level. In this paper, we propose an ROI (Region-Of-Interest) based improvement of visual quality for video telephony services with the H.264|MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC: Advanced Video Coding) codec. To this end, we propose a face detection and tracking method to define ROI for the AVC codec based video telephony. Experiment results show that our proposed ROI based method allowed for improved visual quality in both objective and subjective perspectives.
