  • This paper presents a theoretic study and computer simulation of models and approaches for dynamical obstacle avoidance by mobile robots. The movement of obstacles in unknown environment is described by any one or a combination of three models. The control strategy of the mobile robots is formulated based on one of three approaches. A trajectory-guided control strategy for dynamical obstacle avoidance has been developed. The method greatly simplifies the control process of mobile robots, and is computationally attractive.

  • We propose a optimal fusion method for localization of multiple robots utilizing correlation between GPS on each robot in common workspace. Each mobile robot in group collects position data from each odometer and GPS receiver and shares the position data with other robots. Then each robot utilizes position data of other robot for obtaining more precise estimation of own position. Because GPS data errors in common workspace have a close correlation, they contribute to improve localization accuracy of all robots in group. In this paper, we simulate proposed optimal fusion method of odometer and GPS through virtual robots and position data.

  • This paper deals with the recognition of multiple mobile robots equipped with RFID tag. In the case that the number of robots recognized by each RFID reader is larger than that of allocated slots, the clashing recognition occurs. And, in the case that the total number of robots recognized by all RFID reader is larger than that of real robots, the repetitious recognition occurs. We employ the dynamic frame slot allocation by using the ALOHA algorithm to prevent the clashing recognition and estimate the number of robots by using the received signal strength indication to prevent the repetitious recognition. The numerical experiment shows the reliability and the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • For a practical mobile robot team such as carrying out a search and rescue mission in a disaster area, the localization have to be guaranteed even in an environment where the network infrastructure is destroyed or a global positioning system (GPS) is unavailable. The proposed architecture supports localizing robots seamlessly by finding their relative locations while moving from a global outdoor environment to a local indoor position. The proposed schemes use a cooperative positioning system (CPS) based on the two-way ranging (TWR) technique. In the proposed TWR-based CPS, each non-localized mobile robot act as tag, and finds its position using bilateral range measurements of all localized mobile robots. The localized mobile robots act as anchors, and support the localization of mobile robots in the GPS-shadow region such as an indoor environment. As a tag localizes its position with anchors, the position error of the anchor propagates to the tag, and the position error of the tag accumulates the position errors of the anchor. To minimize the effect of error propagation, this paper suggests the new scheme of full-mesh based CPS for improving the position accuracy. The proposed schemes assuring localization were validated through experiment results.

  • The Expanded Guide Circle (EGC) method has been originally proposed as the guidance navigation method for improving the efficiency of the remote operation using the sensory information. The previous algorithm is, however, concerned only for the omni-directional mobile robot, so it needs to suggest a suitable one for a mobile robot with non-holonomic constraints. The ego-kinematic transform is a method to map points of $R^2$ into the ego-kinematic space which implicitly represents non-holonomic constraints for admissible paths. Thus, robots with non-holonomic constraints in the ego-kinematic space can be considered as "free-flying object". In this paper, we propose an effective obstacle avoidance method for mobile robots with non-holonomic constraints by applying EGC method in the ego-kinematic space using the ego-kinematic transformation. This proposed method shows that it works better for non-holonomic mobile robots such as differential-drive robot than the original one. The simulation results show its effectiveness of performance.

  • An accurate outdoor localization method using line/arc features is suggested for mobile robots with LRFs (Laser Range Finders) and odometry. Localization is a key process for outdoor mobile robots which are used for autonomous navigation, exploration and so on. In this paper, an accurate pose correction algorithm is proposed for mobile robots using LRFs, which use three feature types: line, circle, and arc. Using this method we can reduce the number of singular cases that robots couldn't find their pose. Finally we have got simulation results to validate the proposed algorithm.

  • A sensor system has been developed to measure the posture(position and orientation) of mobile robots working in industrial environments. The proposed sensor system consists of a CCD camera, retro-reflective landmarks, a strobe unit and an image processing board. The proposed hardware system can be built in economic price compared to commercial vision systems. The system has the capability of measuring the posture of mobile robots within 60 msec when a 386 personal computer is used as the host computer. The experimental results demonstrated a remarkable performance of the proposed sensor system in the posture measurement of mobile robots - the average error in position is less than 3 mm and the average error in orientation is less than 1.5.

  • In situations where mobile robots are operated either by autonomous systems or human operators, such as smart factories, priority-based teleoperation is crucial for the multiple operators with different priority to take over the right of the robot control without conflict. This paper proposes a priority-based teleoperation system for multiple operators to control the robots. This paper also introduces an efficient joystick-based robot control command generation algorithm for differential-drive mobile robots. The proposed system is implemented with ROS (Robot Operating System) and embedded control boards, and is applied to Pioneer 3AT mobile robot platform. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed joystick control command algorithm and the priority-based control input selection.

  • It is often necessary to observe the working environment of a robot to control it efficiently in the remote location. The remote sensing data and control commands are transmitted via various media such as radio, microwave, and computer network. The World Wide Web can be used as the infrastructure for teleoperation of mobile robots. In this paper we propose an advanced technique of the remote control of mobile robots on the web. For the real-time control, the image separation algorithm is proposed to transmit the current positions of mobile robots instead of transmitting the full frame image. It is shown by experiments that the proposed algorithm is effective.

  • In this paper we propose a new approach to the autonomous wall-following of wheeled mobile robots using hybrid system reference motion synthesis and generation. The hybrid system approach is in-troduced to the motion control of nonholonomic mobile robots for the indoor navigation problems. In the dis-crete event system the discrete states are defined by the user-defined constraints and the reference mo-tion commands are specified in the abstracted motions. The hybrid control system applied for the non-holonomic mobile robots can combine the motion planning and autonomous navigation with obstacle avoid-ance for the indoor navigation problem. Simulation results show that hybrid system approach is an effective method for the autonomous navigation in indoor environments.
