  • As military service members are fully permitted to use mobile phones for sickness after work, it is time to minimize the direct collection of personal information from telecommunication companies when opening mobile phones to secure the safety of military service personnel's personal information. Prior to introducing the use of mobile phones by soldiers after work, the Ministry of National Defense established a security control system such as blocking the mobile phone shooting function to prevent security accidents and concerns about some adverse functions such as illegal cyber gambling, game addiction, and viewing pornography. come. Mobile telecommunications companies entrust personal information processing tasks, such as opening mobile phones, to telecommunications agencies and carry out management and supervision, such as checking the status of personal information protection measures. When a military service member opens a mobile phone, a personal information management agency is newly established using the right to portability of personal information, and a system for requesting the transmission of personal information from the military service member is proposed.

  • A study was conducted to investigate the availability of Fitts' Law to Hangul input systems on mobile phones. Three different Hangul input systems were experimented to measure the performance time to evaluate the physical interface of all. The measured performance time was found to be well fitted with the modified Fitts' Law by Hangul input systems on mobile phones. As a result, the physical interfaces for Hangul input systems could be evaluated quantitatively with the prediction of the performance time by Fitts' Law.

  • As the features of mobile phones are being enhanced and the performance is being greatly improved, the generic operating systems are being incrementally used in mobile phones. However, since the mobile phones have different requirements in both features and performance compared with desktop or server systems, the operating systems for generic systems could not be used without customization and modification. This case study paper describes the design and implementation of a Linux-based smartphone hardware and software. The enhancements and additional implementations in both kernel and middleware layers are explained. As an experiment, the power consumption of the implemented mobile phone under a number of user scenarios has been measured.

  • This study empirically evaluated performance and preference of Hangul entry methods of five mobile phones through questionnaire and experiments. The questionnaire study revealed that 67% of respondents have been using SMS(short message service) more than six times a day, and that Hangul entry method is the most inconvenient thing when inputting Hangul characters. An experiment was conducted for assessing five Hangul entry methods in view of performance of entry time and errors, and subjective measures of satisfaction and preference. The results showed that Hangul entry method significantly affect objective performances as well as subjective measures at α=0.05 or 0.01. This study, in which real mobile phones were used, presented contrary result in terms of Hangul entry time, compared to the existing studies based on the conceptual models of Fitts' law or Hick-Hyman law.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of sensibility and compatibility from function sounds of mobile phones. For this purpose, the present study extracted sensibility adjectives and carried out sensibility evaluation to identify the sensibility factors in the function sounds of mobile phones. And 65 sound sources out of six categories were investigated for 27 subjects. The result showed that two dominant sensibility factors were the duration and the melody pattern of the sound sources. The compatibilities of opening and closing sounds were evaluated lowly with short duration and quick tempo. Especially, the most of the subjects preferred more attractive and longer opening sounds than other function sounds. Another finding was that the short sounds with melodies were preferred for cancellations and alerts, unliked the commonly used sound sources in industry and other traditional electronic products.

  • This study aims to compare and contrast the Kansei modeling methods for building a luxuriousness model that people feel about appearance of mobile phones. For the evaluation based on Kansei engineering approaches, 15 participants were employed to evaluate 18 mobile phones using a questionnaire. The results of evaluation were analyzed to build luxuriousness models through quantification I method, neural network, and decision tree method, respectively. The performance of Kansei modeling methods was compared and contrasted in terms of accuracy and predictability. The result of comparison of modeling methods indicated that model accuracy and predictability was closely related to the number of variables and data size. It was also revealed that quantification I method was the best in terms of model accuracy while decision tree method was the best modeling method with small variance in terms of predictability. However, it was empirically found that quantification I method showed extremely unstable predictability with small number of data. Consequently, it is expected that the research findings of this study might be utilized as a guideline for selecting proper Kansei modeling method.

  • This study examines how different uses of social network sites (SNS) and mobile phones (MP) to communicate with friends and business associates are related to the acquisition of job-related information, job mobility, and entrepreneurial intentions, using social capital as its main theoretical lens. To this end, a nationally representative, random digit dialing (RDD) survey was conducted in Singapore. Path analyses show that SNS interactions with friends are positively related to both bonding and bridging social capital. The former is linked with greater job mobility, the latter with entrepreneurship, and both are associated with more job-related information. SNS interactions with business contacts are directly positively related to job-related information and entrepreneurship. For mobile phones, interactions with friends are positively related to social capital, job information and entrepreneurship. Professional networking is associated with more bridging social capital, job information and job mobility. Bonding capital is found to be linked with greater job mobility, while bridging capital has a positive relationship with both entrepreneurship and job mobility.

  • Recently, there are many home network applications using the convergence between mobile platforms and home network system. As smart phones which are called small PC in the hand becoming popular, the development of home network application beyond the one of cellular phones is required. Android mobile platform of Google includes OS, middleware and primary applications. Also, in addition to smart phones, it can be mounted on various devices such as set-top box and household appliances. In this paper, home network services on smart phones of Android platform are designed and implemented. The services provide real-time monitoring information (temperature, humidity, real-time video) of rooms and appliance control in a house.

  • Since mobile phones are used as common communication devices, their applications are increasingly important to human's life. Using smart-phones camera to collect daily life environment's information is one of targets for many applications such as text recognition, object recognition or context awareness. Studies have been conducted to provide important information through the recognition of texts, which are artificially or naturally included in images and movies acquired from mobile phones. In this study, a character segmentation method that improves character-recognition accuracy in images obtained from mobile phone cameras is proposed. The proposed method first classifies texts in a given image to printed letters and handwritten letters since segmentation approaches for them are different. For printed letters, rough segmentation process is conducted, then the segmented regions are integrated, deleted, and re-segmented. Segmentation for the handwritten letters is performed after skews are corrected and the characters are classified by integrating them. The experimental result shows our method achieves a successful performance for both printed and handwritten letters as 95.9% and 84.7%, respectively.

  • Investigations of retrospective dosimetry have shown that components of mobile phones are suitable as emergency dosimeters in case of radiological incidents. For physical dosimetry, components can be read out using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), thermoluminescence (TL) and phototransferred thermoluminescence (PTTL) methods to determine the absorbed dose. This paper deals with a feasibility study of display glass from modern mobile phones that are measured by thermally assisted (Ta) optically stimulated luminescence. Violet (VSL, 405 nm) and infrared (IRSL, 850 nm) LEDs were used for optical stimulation and two protocols (Ta-VSL and Ta-IRSL) were tested. The aim was to systematically investigate the luminescence properties, compare the results to blue stimulated Ta-BSL protocol (458 nm) and to develop a robust measurement protocol for the usage as an emergency dosimeter after an incident with ionizing radiation. First, the native signals were measured to calculate the zero dose signal. Next, the reproducibility and dose response of the luminescence signals were analyzed. Finally, the signal stability was tested after the storage of irradiated samples at room temperature. In general, the developed Ta-IRSL and Ta-VSL protocols indicate usability, however, further research is needed to test the potential of a new protocol for physical retrospective dosimetry.
