  • This study reports the potential of using commercial copy papers as substrates for simple sensitive glucose detection. Typical paper-based devices use filter papers as porous substrates that can contain reagents; however, this is the first study to report the use of copy papers for the purpose of enhancing enzymatic colorimetric detection. Glucose detection using glucose oxidase, horseradish peroxidase and potassium iodide was performed on a copy paper, cellulose-based filter paper, and polyethylene film. The results indicated that the copy paper exhibited a stronger coloration than the other substrates. Reagents required for detection were dried on the copy paper, and a 3D-printed holder was designed to provide an environment for consistent imaging, making it a convenient cost-effective option for point-of-care testing using a mobile phone camera. The simple paper-based glucose sensor exhibited a linear range of 0.1-20 mM, limit of quantification of 0.477 mM, and limit of detection of 0.143 mM.

  • In recent years, social networks come into the spotlight as the important ways to find people or share information. Especially, existing social network services based on the Internet, such as Facebook.com and Cyworld.com, are now extended into the mobile environment. A mobile phone easily collects the personal information since it is carried by the user at all times, and various types of data can be gathered together with the advance of sensor technologies. These features differentiate the mobile social network services from the previous Internet-based services. In this paper, we estimate the user's mobile social contexts like closeness and relationship between the user and surrounding people using Bayesian networks. The mobile social contexts can be employed as important information for providing mobile social network services, and experimental results on real world data have verified their possibilities.

  • Nowadays, recognizing human activities is an important subject; it is exploited widely and applied to many fields in real-life, especially in health care and context aware application. Research achievements are mainly focused on activities of daily living which are useful for suggesting advises to health care applications. Falling event is one of the biggest risks to the health and well-being of the elderly especially in independent living because falling accidents may be caused from heart attack. Recognizing this activity still remains in difficult research area. Many systems equipped wearable sensors have been proposed but they are not useful if users forget to wear the clothes or lack ability to adapt themselves to mobile systems without specific wearable sensors. In this paper, we develop a novel method based on analyzing the change of acceleration, orientation when the fall occurs and measure their similarity to featured fall patterns. In this study, we recruit five volunteers in our experiment including various fall categories. The results are effective for recognizing fall activity. Our system is implemented on G1 smart phone which are already plugged accelerometer and orientation sensors. The popular phone is used to get data from accelerometer and results showthe feasibility of our method and significant contribution to fall detection.

  • In recent years, numerous mega-size and complex civil infrastructures have been constructed worldwide. For the more precise construction and maintenance process management of these civil infrastructures, the application of a variety of smart sensor-based structural health monitoring (SHM) systems is required. The efficient management of both sensors and collected databases is also very important. Recently, several kinds of database access technologies using Quick Response (QR) code and Augmented Reality (AR) applications have been developed. These technologies provide software tools incorporated with mobile devices, such as smart phone, tablet PC and smart pad systems, so that databases can be accessed very quickly and easily. In this paper, an AR-based structural health monitoring technique is suggested for sensor management and the efficient access of databases collected from sensor networks that are distributed at target structures. The global positioning system (GPS) in mobile devices simultaneously recognizes the user location and sensor location, and calculates the distance between the two locations. In addition, the processed health monitoring results are sent from a main server to the user's mobile device, via the RSS (really simple syndication) feed format. It can be confirmed that the AR-based structural health monitoring technique is very useful for the real-time construction process management of numerous mega-size and complex civil infrastructures.

  • With the introduction of smart phones, the augmented reality became popular and is increasingly drawing attention. The augmented reality in the mobile devices is becoming an individual area to study. Many applications of the augmented reality have been studied, but there are just a few studies on its combination with artificial intelligence in games. In this study, an artificial intelligence algorithm was proposed, which dynamically converts the state of the 3D agent in the augmented reality environment using the 3-Axis acceleration sensor in the smart phone. To control the state of the agent to which the artificial intelligence is applied, users used to directly enter the data or use markers to detect them. The critical values, which were determined via test, were given to the acceleration sensor to ensure accurate state conversion. In this paper, makerless tracking technology was used to implement the augmented reality, and the state of the agent was dynamically converted using the 3-Axis acceleration seonsor.

  • Auto-exposure control automatically calculates and adjusts the exposure for consecutive input image. Recently, this is usually controlled by the sensor gain, however, unsuitable control causes oscillation of luminance for sonsecutive input images, called as flickering. Also, in mobile phone cameras, only simple information, such as the average luminance value, can be utilized due to coarse performance. Therefore, this paper presents a new real-time AE control method using a Look Up Table(LUT) based on Scene-Luminance curves to avoid the generation of flickering. Prior to the AE control, a LUT is constructed, which illustrates the characteristic of outputs for input patches corresponding to sensor gains. The AE control is first performed by estimating a current scene as a patch using the proposed LUT. A new sensor gain is then estimated using also LUT with previously estimated patch. The entire estimation process is performed using linear interpolation to achieve real-time execution. Based on experimental results, the proposed AE control is demonstrated with real-time, flicker-free.
