  • In order to supply emotion service depending on user's emotional change in a mobile environment, various researches have been carried. This paper discusses a protocol for wireless charging and an embedded platform of the mobile emotional sensing device which supports that. Wireless charging process relieves user's vexatious task to charge the emotional sensing device. To support wireless charging, there are one basestation and several mobile devices. Basestation coordinates and controls the devices over wireless communication, as well as supplies energy. For 1:N communication we defines the network whose superframe is classified into four categories: a network join superframe, a charging request superframe, a charging superframe and an inactive superframe. Physical layer provides how to supply energy to the devices and communicate physically. Mobile device is equipped with energy charged circuits, which correspond with the defined energy supplying method, as well as bidirectional communication circuits. Mobile device monitors and analyzes its own battery status, and is able to send a request packet to basestation. Therefore, it can be charged before its battery is exhausted without user's perception.

  • We develop an embedded system to measure various sensor data, control multiple motors, and communicate with mobile devices for system managements. Choosing TI AM3359 microprocessor featuring high processing performance, low power consumption, and various I/O device support, we design and build the embedded system hardware so that it supports multiple global positioning system (GPS) and gyro sensor modules to measure precise position; multiple pulse width modulation (PWM) outputs to control multiple direct current (DC) motors; a Bluetooth module to communicate with mobile devices. Then, we port the boot loader and device drivers to the built circuit board and construct the firmware development environment for the application programming. The performance of the designed and implemented embedded system is demonstrated by real motor control test using GPS and gyro sensor data and control parameters configured by a mobile device.

  • Biomedical mobile devices for ubiquitous healthcare consist of biomedical sensors and communication terminal. They have two types of configuration. One is the sensor-network type device using wired or wireless communication with intelligent sensors to acquire biomedical data. The other is the sensor embedded type device, where the data can be acquired directly by itself. There are many examples of sensor network type, such as, fall detection sensor, blood glucose sensor, and ECG sensors networked with commercial PDA phone and commercial phone terminal for ubiquitous healthcare. On the other hand, sensor embedded type mounts blood glucose sensor, accelerometer, and etc. on commercial phone. However, to enable true ubiquitous healthcare, motion sensing is essential, because users go around anywhere and their signals should be measured and monitored, when they are affected by the motion. Therefore, in this paper, two biomedical mobile devices with motion monitoring function were addressed. One is sensor-network type with motion monitoring function, which uses Zigbee communication to measure the ECG, PPG and acceleration. The other is sensor-embedded type with motion monitoring function, which also can measure the data and uses the built-in cellular phone network modem for remote connection. These devices are expected to be useful for ubiquitous healthcare in coming aged society in Korea.

  • A 3-Dimensional engine in a mobile embedded device is divided into a C-based OpenGL/ES and a Java-based JSR184 which interprets and executes a byte code in a real-time. In these two standards, the JSR184 supporting Java objects uses more processor resources than an OpenGL/ES and thus has a constraint when it is used in an embedded device with a limited computing power. On the other hand, 3-Dimensional contents employed in existing personal computer are created by utilizing advantages of Java and secured numerous users in European market, due to the good quality in contents and extensive service in a commercial network, GSM. Because of the reason, a mobile embedded device used in a GSM network needs a JSR184 which can provide an existing Java-based 3-Dimensional contents without extra conversion processes, but the current version of Java-based 3-Dimensional engine has drawbacks in application to commercial products because it requires more computing power than the mobile embedded device. This paper proposes a binding technique with the advantages of Java objects to improve a processing speed of 3-Dimensional contents in limited resources of a mobile embedded device. The technique supports a JSR184 standard interface in the upper layer to utilize 3-Dimensional contents using Java, employs a different code-conversion language, KNI(Kilo Native Interface), in the middle layer to interface between OpenGL/ES and JSR184, and embodies an OpenGL/ES standard in the lower layer. The validity of the binding technique is demonstrated through a simulator and a FPGA embedding an ARM.

  • In recent, development of wireless internet technology gradually has increased multimedia application in mobile device. Specially, application of grand capacity multimedia contents has increased in mobile environment gradually. MPEG-7 can search multimedia data using various type. But in restricted grand capacity of multimedia, MPEG-7 is used to be limited in desktop computer system mostly. Therefore, management of grand capacity multimedia data has become very important researching topic in mobile environment, and so embedded DBMS based on MPEG-7 for multimedia data management in client-server environment is needed. The system supports restricted hardware resource for multimedia application in mobile device. In this paper, we propose a method for MPEG-7 data clustering that included MPEG-7 data property. On the base of the clustering result, we also develop the embedded multimedia database management system based on MPEG-7 scheme(EMDS:MPEG-7 Scheme Based Embedded Multimedia Database Management System) in mobile device such as PDA.

  • These days, as a side effect of the growth of the mobile devices, malwares for the mobile devices also tend to increase and become more dangerous. Because embedded Linux is one of the advanced OSes on mobile devices, a solution to preventing malwares from infecting and destroying embedded Linux will be needed. We present a scheme using signature verification for embedded Linux that prevents executallle-Infecting malwares. The proposed scheme works under collaboration between mobile devices and a server. Malware detection is delegated to the server. In a mobile device, only integrity of all executables and dynamic libraries is checked at kernel level every time by kernel modules using LSM hooks just prior to loading of executables and dynamic libraries. All procedures in the mobile devices are performed only at kernel level. In experiments with a mobile embedded device, we confirmed that the scheme is able to prevent all executable-Infecting malwares while minimizing damage caused by execution of malwares or infected files, power consumption and performance overheads caused by malware check routines.

  • We propose video management system based on MPEG-7 for mobile device(MVMS). Most of existing MPEG-7 applications manage MPEG-7 document based on file system in the desktop environment. To contrast them, because the MVMS manages only necessary information using embedded database system for MPEG-7 documents in mobile devices, it can use efficiently lack of the resource in mobile device environment. MVMS supports key image extraction and MPEG-7 document edition function. Moreover, this is possible search and management of multi document because of MVMS manage MPEG-7 data through embedded DB.

  • The existing remote control system have some inherent disadvantage of direct control in the limit range. In some special cases, for example, a power apparatus, an unmanned factory, a nuclear factory, a security management system, the tele-operation is needed to control remote robot without limit space. This field is based on the Internet communication. Because the Internet is constructed all over the world. And it is possible that we control remote mobile robot in the long distance. In this paper, we developed a remote control system. This system is divided into two primary parts. These are local site and remote site. There are the moving robot and web server in the remote site and there is the robot control device in local site. The moving robot is moved by two stepper motors and the robot control device consists of SA-1100 micro controller and embedded Linux. And this controller is an embedded system. Public personal computer which is connected the Internet is used for the web server. The web server provides the mobile robot control interface program to the remote controller and captures the image for feedback information. In the whole system, a robot control device is connected with moving robot and web server through the Internet. So the operator can control the moving robot in the distance through the Internet.

  • Recently, on-device artificial intelligence (AI) solutions using mobile devices and embedded edge devices have emerged in various fields, such as computer vision, to address network traffic burdens, low-energy operations, and security problems. Although vision transformer deep learning models have outperformed conventional convolutional neural network (CNN) models in computer vision, they require more computations and parameters than CNN models. Thus, they are not directly applicable to embedded edge devices with limited hardware resources. Many researchers have proposed various model compression methods or lightweight architectures for vision transformers; however, there are only a few studies evaluating the effects of model compression techniques of vision transformers on performance. Regarding this problem, this paper presents a performance evaluation of vision transformers on embedded platforms. We investigated the behaviors of three vision transformers: DeiT, LeViT, and MobileViT. Each model performance was evaluated by accuracy and inference time on edge devices using the ImageNet dataset. We assessed the effects of the quantization method applied to the models on latency enhancement and accuracy degradation by profiling the proportion of response time occupied by major operations. In addition, we evaluated the performance of each model on GPU and EdgeTPU-based edge devices. In our experimental results, LeViT showed the best performance in CPU-based edge devices, and DeiT-small showed the highest performance improvement in GPU-based edge devices. In addition, only MobileViT models showed performance improvement on EdgeTPU. Summarizing the analysis results through profiling, the degree of performance improvement of each vision transformer model was highly dependent on the proportion of parts that could be optimized in the target edge device. In summary, to apply vision transformers to on-device AI solutions, either proper operation composition and optimizations specific to target edge devices must be considered.
