Energy Harvesting from Bio-Organic Substance Using Microbial Fuel Cell and Power Conditioning System (미생물 연료 전지와 전력 조절 시스템을 이용한 생체 유기 물질로부터의 전력 생산)

  • This study presents a bio-chemical energy harvesting system which can generate electric power from bioorganic substance contained in vermicompost. It produced electricity by inoculating microbial fuel cell(MFC) with earthworm-composted food waste. The generated electricity was converted into usable voltage level for mobile electronics through power conditioning circuits. The implemented prototype showed $200{\mu}W$ of maximum output electric power, which successfully supplied a beacon device which continuously transmitted data to nearby smartphone without a battery. The proposed system can help develop portable or bio-mimetic energy supply for sustainable use with further improvement.

BL-CAST:Beacon-Less Broadcast Protocol for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

  • With the extension of wireless technology, vehicular ad hoc networks provide important services for the dissemination of general data and emergency warnings. However, since, the vehicle topology frequently changes from a dense to a sparse network depending on the speed of the moving vehicles and the time of day, vehicular ad hoc networks require a protocol that can facilitate the efficient and reliable dissemination of emergency messages in a highly mobile environment under dense or intermittent vehicular connectivity. Therefore, this paper proposes a new vehicular broadcast protocol, called BL-CAST, that can operate effectively in both dense and sparse network scenarios. As a low overhead multi-hop broadcast protocol, BL-CAST does not rely on the periodic exchange of beacons for updating location information. Instead, the location information of a vehicle is included in a broadcast message to identify the last rebroadcasting vehicle in an intermittently connected network. Simulation results show that BL-CAST outperforms the DV-CAST protocol in terms of the end-to-end delay, message delivery ratio and network overhead.

  • 스마트폰과 같은 모바일 기기의 발달과 함께 사용자의 위치에 기반한 다양한 서비스가 출현하고 있다. 그중 사용자의 위치를 기준으로하는 길안내 서비스가 가장 대표적이다. GPS에 기반한 실외 중심의 길안내는 다양한 비콘과 WiFi 등의 기술과 함께 실내에서도 길안내 서비스가 가능하도록 해주고 있다. 하지만, 상기의 사용자 위치에 대한 길안내 서비스는 거리에 대한 인식 단계가 세밀하지 못하기에 해당거리별 상세 서비스가 어려운 것이 현실이다. 이에 본 논문에서는 기존 BLE 비콘의 Immediate, Near, Far의 3단계 거리인식을 6단계까지 확장하여 보다 상세한 안내가 가능한 실내 길안내 서비스를 제안한다. 또한 편의적 기능을 위해 목적지 입력 및 길안내가 음성에 기반하여 구동될 수 있도록 구현하였다.

  • ICT기술은 소프트웨어와 하드웨어의 모든 분야에서 비약적으로 발전을 거듭하고 있다. 이에 따라, 기업에서 전통적으로 사용되어 오는 경영정보시스템들도 다양한 형태로 개선되거나 융합되어지고 있다. 특히, 재택근무, 이동근무, 원격 협업 등의 ICT기술 활용하여 시간과 장소에 얽매이지 않고 업무를 수행하는 스마트워크는 기업의 근무행태에 대한 패러다임을 바꿀 것으로 기대를 받고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 스마트워크의 일환으로 BLE(Bluetooth Low Energy Beacon)을 이용한 모바일 형태의 그룹웨어 시스템을 제안한다.

Experimental Research on the Characteristics of Indoor Positioning Systems and Mobile Robot Navigation (실내용 위치센서의 특성과 이동로봇의 주행제어에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • For indoor mobile robots, the performance of autonomous navigation is affected by a variety of factors. In this paper, we focus on the characteristics of indoor absolute positioning systems. Two commercially available sensor systems are experimentally tested under various conditions. Mobile robot navigation experiments were carried out, and the results show that resultant performance of navigation is highly dependent upon the characteristics of positioning systems. The limitations and characteristics of positioning systems are analyzed from both quantitative and qualitative point of view. On the basis of the analysis, the relationship between the positioning system characteristics and the controller design are presented.

  • In this paper, we propose the CRM service model for analyzing and managing location based data collected by Wi-Fi and BLE. As mobile devices became personalized, enterprises became interested in individual location, and location based mobile marketing started to stand on spotlight. Location based proximity marketing is developing along with contactless data transmission technology, and payment system that uses NFC, Beacon that utilizes BLE, as well as advertisement via Wi-Fi are being serviced. We suggest the model that mobile devices can be detected and identified by MAC address with the need of being connected to Wi-FI or Bluetooth interface. MAC addresses are not associated with any specific user account or mobile phone number. The idea is to be able to measure the amount of people which are present in a certain point at a specific time, allowing the study of the evolution of data analysis and offers effective information for decision-makings.

  • In this paper, using the received signal strength of radio beacon such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, CDMA and GPS signal from the satellite, we propose the system of positioning which considered indoor and outdoor based on the Place Lab. Conventional Place Lab utilize the various positioning parameters to estimate the indoor location. However, this conventional system has limitations with respect to the range and efficiency of usage. Therefore, we defined the converged model of multisensor data and re-organized the Place Lab to overcome the limitation of a conventional system. Proposed system uses the radio beacon signal and GPS signal together to estimate the location. Furthermore, it provides the seamless PNS service with many mobile devices because this system realized by the OSGi bundle. This proposed system has evaluated the performance with SAMSUNG T*OMNIA SCH-M490 smart phone and the result shows the system is able to support the PNS service.

  • In this paper, we proposed new sensor network architecture with autonomous robots based on beacon mode and implemented real time monitoring system in real test-bed environment. The proposed scheme offers beacon based real-time scheduling for reliable association process with parent nodes and dynamically assigns network address by using NAA (Next Address Assignment) mechanism. For the large scale multi-sensor processing, our real-time monitoring system accomplished the intelligent database processing, which can generate not only the alert messages to the civilians but also process various sensing data such as fire, air, temperature and etc. Moreover, we also developed mobile robot which can support network mobility. Though the performance evaluation by using real test-bed system, we illustrate that our proposed system demonstrates promising performance for emergence monitoring systems.

  • 802.11p WAVE is the next-generation wireless communication that can make Ad-hoc network communication possible for Vehicle-to-Vehicle. GBSR protocol, one of the 802.11p WAVE protocols, mainly focuses on improvements in networks that have a tendency to disconnect. However, it does not consider the transmission time and velocity of a packet thus, there is a disadvantage of there being a delay in the transmission velocity, in urgent situations like car accidents, emergency patients transportation and crimes. In this paper, we proposed A-GBSR protocol for transmission of a packet to mobile node which has a high speed through the improved beacon message and Adaptive Neighbor list Management that are considering of the GBSR protocol transmission velocity.

Multi-directional DRSS Technique for Indoor Vehicle Navigation (실내 차량 내비게이션을 위한 다방향 DRSS 기술)

  • While indoor vehicle navigation is an essential component in large-scale parking garages of major cities, technical limitations and challenging propagation environments considerably degrade the accuracy of existing localization techniques. This paper proposes a proximity detection scheme using low-cost beacons where a handheld mobile device within a moving vehicle autonomously detects its approximate position and moving direction by only observing Received Signal Strength (RSS) values of beacon signals. The proposed approach essentially exploits the differential RSS technique of multi-directional beams to reduce the impact of the environment, vehicle, and mobile device. A low-cost multi-directional beacon prototype is developed using Bluetooth technology. The localization performance is evaluated using 96 beacons in an underground parking garage within an area of 394.8m×304.3m. Experimental results show that the 90th percentile of the average proximity detection error is 0.8m. Furthermore, our proposed scheme provides robust proximity detection performance with various vehicles and mobile devices.
