  • In mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET), the network topology and neighboring nodes change frequently, since MANET is composed of nodes that have mobility without a fixed network infrastructure. The AODV routing protocol is advantageous for MANET, but AODV has a delay in the transmission of data packets because AODV can not transmit data during route recovery. This paper proposes solving the above problem of AODV by using a bypass generation mechanism for data transmission during route recovery. For further improvement, additional mechanisms that coordinate the reception threshold of a hello packet are proposed in order to improve the accuracy of the information obtained from the neighboring nodes when the bypass is generated due to a link failure and the immediacy of the route recovery. Simulation results show that the proposed technique improves the performance in terms of the delay in transmission compared to traditional AODV.

  • Short-range wireless communication and networking technologies are becoming increasingly important in enabling useful mobile applications. for example, ZigBee technology is expected to provide low cost and low power connectivity for equipment that needs battery life as long as several months to several years. In addition, ZigBee can be implemented in mesh networks larger than is possible with Bluetooth. The main features of this ZigBee standard are network flexibility, low cost, very low power consumption, and low data rate in an adhoc self-organizing network among fixed, portable and moving devices. Home network/Home automation is one of the key market areas for Zigbee, with an example of a simple network This paper investigates the effect of short range wireless channel on the performance of Zigbee system and DSSS-BPSK signal transmission in AWGN, interference and Rician fading environments. And we investigate performance degradation due to interference and fading effects in short range wireless channel. In particular, the impacts of the fading and interference level on the bit error probability is shown in BER performance figures.

  • To verify the condition of patients moving in the medical center like hospital needs to be consider the various wireless communication network protocols and network components. Wireless communication protocols such as the 802.11a, 802.11g, and direct sequence has their specific characteristics, and the various components such as the number of mobile nodes or the distance of transmission range could affects the performance of the network. Especially, the network topologies are considered the characteristic of the brain wave(EEG) since the condition of patient is detected from it. Therefore, in this paper, various wireless communication networks are designed and simulated with Opnet simulator, then evaluated the performance to verify the wireless network that transmits the patient's EEG data efficiently. Overall, the 802.11g had the best performance for the wireless network environment that transmits the EEG data. However, there were minor difference on the performance result depends on the components of the topologies.

  • As the number of mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets explodes, the need for new services or applications is also rapidly increasing. Smart class application is one of the emerging applications, in which most of contents are distributed to all members of a class simultaneously. It is highly required to select relay nodes to cover shadow area of radio as well as extend coverage, but existing algorithms in a smart class environment suffer from high control packet overhead and delay for exchanging topology information among all pairs of nodes to select relay nodes. In addition, the relay selection procedure should be repeated in order to adapt to the dynamic topology changes caused by link status changes or device's movement. This paper proposes the learning based relay selection algorithm to overcome aforementioned problems. The key idea is that every node keeps track of its relay quality in a fully distributed manner, where RQI (Relay Quality Indicator) is newly defined to measure both the ability of receiving packets from content source and the ability of successfully relaying them to successors. The RQI of each node is updated whenever it receives or relays broadcast packet, and the node having the higher RQI is selected as a relay node in a distributed and run-time manner. Thus, the proposed algorithm not only removes the overhead for obtaining prior knowledge to select relay nodes, but also provides the adaptability to the dynamic topology changes. The network simulation and experimental results prove that the proposed algorithm provides efficient and reliable content distribution to all members in a smart class as well adaptability against network dynamics.

  • The PBNM on MANET is being researched to ensure the reliability and efficiency between mobile nodes. Therefore, it is essential to determine the cluster effectively which will perceive the movements of nodes and distribute the policies. In PBNM mechanism, to determine the node cluster for PDP and manage PEP nodes, Active PDP Discovery Protocol is proposed as a mechanism which is more efficient than preexistent techniques. While k-hop cluster selects the PEP nodes which PDP node manages, Active PDP Discovery actively selects the PDP node among the moving PEP node. This method prevents orphan nodes that are not connected to PDP and reduces continual broadcasting messages. This paper implements Active PDP Discovery which determines cluster in the real networks and analyzes its capability, expanding COPS-PR to detect the movement of nodes and adding MNL to PDP node.

  • TDMA MAC protocol in MANET requires precise network synchronization between nodes though network topology changes continuously due to node mobility and the effect of propagation environment. In this paper we propose in-band cross-layer network synchronization architecture for TDMA-based MANETs. In the proposed architecture TDMA MAC protocol and proactive routing protocol cooperate closely to rapidly detect network partition and merge caused by node mobility and to precisely maintain network synchronization. We also implement the proposed synchronization architecture in OPNET simulator and evaluate the performance of it in various simulation scenarios. Simulation results show that our architecture stably maintains network time synchronization in both network partition and merge situations.

  • TCP is needed as a transport protocol to provide reliable end-to-end message delivery for MANETs in order to achieve a smooth integration with the fixed Internet. Particularly, TCP has its variants, namely TCP-Reno and TCP-Vegas. However, there has been no research work on extensive performance comparison of TCP-Reno and TCP-Vegas over AODV and OLSR. This paper is the first trial to perform the research by using ns-2 simulator. Through the extensive simulations, we found that which to select among routing protocols is more important than which to select among TCP variants, because the performance difference between TCP-Reno and TCP-Vegas over uy selected routing protocol is not so much outstanding. Particularly, TCP-Vegas relies on an accurate BaseRTT estimation in order to decide the sending rate of a TCP Sender. However, it cannot be directly applied to MANET because a route change makes the Base an used over a Previous Path obsolete. Therefore, we propose a technique for improving the performance of TCP-Vegas by considering the route change, and show the performance improvement through simulation study.

  • Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) experience frequent link disconnections due to non-uniform node distribution and mobility. Thus, end-to-end path establishment-based routing protocols cause frequent transmission failures in MANETs, resulting in heavy control messages for path reestablishment. While location-based MANET routing protocols, such as Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing (GPSR), use location information to forward messages in a hop-by-hop routing fashion without an end-to-end path establishment procedure, such protocols encounter communication void problems when message forwarding to the next hop fails due to the absence of a relay node. Therefore, to solve this problem, this paper proposes a Delay Tolerant-GPSR (DT-GPSR) protocol, which combines Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) technology with the GPSR protocol. The performance of DT-GPSR is compared with the performances of the original GPSR and PRoPHET routing protocols through simulation using NS-2. The simulation results confirm that DT-GPSR outperforms GPSR and PRoPHET in terms of the message delivery ratio and message delivery delay.

  • MANET, which does not have any infrastructure other than wireless nodes, has the advantage of being able to construct a fast network. However, the movement of nodes and wireless media are also the causes of security vulnerabilities of MANET. In particular, the damage caused by the attacking nodes existing on the network is considerably greater than that of other networks. Therefore, it is necessary to detection technique for attacking nodes and techniques to reduce damage caused by attacks. In this paper, we proposed a hierarchical structure technique to increase the efficiency of intrusion detection and collaboration-based intrusion detection technique applying a P2P mesh network configuration technique to reduce damage caused by attacks. There was excluded the network participation of the attacking node in advance through the reliability evaluation of the nodes in the cluster. In addition, when an attack by an attacking node is detected, this paper was applied a method of minimizing the damage of the attacking node by transmitting quickly the attack node information to the global network through the P2P mesh network between cluster heads. The ns-2 simulator was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed technique, and the excellent performance of the proposed technique was confirmed through comparative experiments.
