  • In order to investigate the mold reaction characteristics of Mn steel and Cr steel castings individually, the mold reaction products were examined by scanning electron microscopy, electron prove microanalyzer and X-ray diffractometer. From this experiment, the results were summarized as follows: 1) The mold reaction depth increased with increase of Mn content, while it decreased with increase of Cr content. 2) Mold reaction depth decreased with Mn content at $1200^{\circ}C$. 3) Mn, among the reaction products, forms a low fusion silicate, Mn $O.SiO_2$ while Cr forms a stable oxide, $CrO_3$ which hindering the reaction between FeO and $SiO_2$ thus the formation of $FeO.SiO_2$ was depressed.

  • In the industry, Zn galvanizing on the steel using the principle of sacrificial anode is used. The steel have some problem, specially corrosion problem. To solve corrosion problem, Zn-Mn alloy plating has been studied as one of the measures to increase the corrosion resistance rather than pure zinc plating. It is possible to be applied to automotive parts requiring high corrosion resistance even though the plating cost is high. In this study, Zn-Mn alloys were electrodeposited from an acidic chloride bath. The influence of the electrolytic conditions on the composition of the alloy plating in the chloride bath was investigated. As the current density of the cathode increases, Zn content of electrodeposit decrease and Mn content of electrodeposit increase. As the temperature of the electrolyte increases, Zn content of electrodeposit decrease and Mn content of electrodeposit increase. The results are explained by the cathode overvoltage curve of Mn and Zn.

  • Effect of substitution of Mn for Ni on transformation behavior, shape memory characteristics and superelasticity of Ti45Ni-5Cu alloy has been investigated by means of electrical resistivity measurements, X-ray diffraction, thermal cycling tests under constant load and tensile tests. The one-stage B2-B19' transformation occurred when Mn content was 0.5 at%, above which the two-stage B2-B19-B19' transformation occurred. A temperature range where the B19 martensite exists was expanded with increasing Mn content because decreasing rate of Ms (60 K / % Mn) was larger than that of Ms' (40 K / % Mn). Ti-(45-x)Ni-5Cu-xMn alloys were deformed in plastic manner with a fracture strain of 60 % ~ 32 % depending on Mn content. Clear superelasticity was found in fully annealed Ti-(45-x)Ni-5Cu-xMn alloys with Mn content more than 1.0 at%, which was ascribe to a solid solution hardening by substitution of Mn for Ni.

  • The effect of silicon and manganese, in the ranges of 0.3% to 1.0wt% Si and 0.7 to 2.6wt%Mn, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of flux cored arc welded deposits have been investigated for the purpose of improving mechanical properties. Microstructure of weld metals was mainly influenced by manganese content, and manganese increased the volum fraction of acicular ferrite and refined the microstructure. Also, tensile properties were governed by manganese content, ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were increased by approximately 82MPa and 58MPa per 1% Mn addition to the deposit. Toughness was improved by increasing Mn content and lowering Si content. Optimal impact properties were obtained at above 1.8wt% Mn and below 0.5wt% Si. Acicular ferrite was predominant factor in improving mechanical properties. Formation of acicular ferrite was promoted by manganese and no direct relationship between AF(acicular ferrite) proportion and oxygen in weld metal was found.

  • The effects of $V_2O_5$ addition as an additive on the densification, the microstructure and the magnetic properties of Mn-Zn ferrites were studied. The maximum density was observed at 0.1 wt% $V_2O_5$ content and it was recognized that a small content of $V_2O_5$ prohibited the discontinuous grain growth. The initial permeability showed maximum at 0.1 wt% $V_2O_5$ content and the power loss minimum at 0.03 wt% $V_2O_5$ content. It was found that a small content of $V_2O_5$ went into solid solution in the Mn-Zn ferrites, but above that extent $V_2O_5$ formed a second phase to be segregated at the grain boundaries.

  • Alumina added with Mn3O4 up to 7.5 cat% of Mn was prepared by conventional ceramic processing, and the sintering behavior and the optical properties of which were studied as functions of Mn content. Densification and grain growth of alumina were enhanced by Mn addition up to 0.75 cat% but was leveled off at higher concentrations. XRD revealed that $Al_2MnO_4$(galaxite) was formed as a second phase in the specimens with more than 0.75 cat% of Mn. Thus it is believed that either the solid solution effect of Mn or the Zener effect of $Al_2MnO_4$ becomes predominant in the sintering of Mn-added $Al_2O_3$ according to the additive concentration. UV-VIS reflectivity(SCI) spectra of Mn-added $Al_2O_3$ consisted of smooth bottoms in 300~550 nm wavelength range and plateaus at wavelengths longer than 650 nm. The reflectivity spectrum continuously moved downward, and the specimen color became darker and thicker with increasing Mn content. The CIELAB color change with respect to standard white was also dependent on the amount of Mn added: ${\Delta}L^*$(D65) negatively increased and ${\Delta}E_{ab}^*$(D65) positively increased with increasing Mn content, probably due to Mn substitution to Al and/or the mixing effect of black $Al_2MnO_4$ as a second phase.

  • We have reported that an Fe-17wt%Mn alloy exhibits the highest damping capacity in the Fe-Mn binary system. In the present work, the effects of copper content on the damping capacity, atmospheric corrosion and mechanical properties were studied. The damping capacities were measured at room temperature for the air cooled Fe-17wt%Mn alloy having copper content from 0.1wt% to 1.1wt%. The damping capacity of the Fe-17wt %Mn alloy was decreased with increasing copper content. However, the addition of Copper was found to improve mechanical properties and atmospheric corrosion resistance. These mechanical properties were attributed to the formation of stress-induced martensite during tensile test.

  • Effect of Co content on the microstructure and damping capacity of Fe-23%Mn-X%Co alloy was studied. The volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite of the alloy was increased with increasing Co content. The hardness was increased with lowering cooling temperature and increasing Co content in Fe-23%Mn-X%Co alloy, which is ascribed to the increase in ${\varepsilon}$ martensite content. The damping capacity of Fe-23%Mn-X%Co alloy was linearly increased with increasing the strain amplitude, and was constant regardless of Co content at the same volume fractions of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite when the low strain amplitudes ($1{\sim}3{\times}10^{-4}$) were applied, while the damping capacity with large strain amplitudes ($4{\sim}6{\times}10^{-4}$) became higher with increasing Co content at all valume fractions of ${\varepsilon}$.

  • This pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of systematic variation appling of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn on forage performance of orchardgrass and white clover. The treatments of systematic variation were 0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25, and $100/0\%$ in the Fe/Cu(trial-1), Mn/Zn(trial-2), and Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn(trial-3), respectively. The treatments of Fe/Mn/Cu/Zn(trial-4) were $70\%$ in main-element and $10\% in other 3 sub-elements, respectively. 1. Compared with orchadgrass, white clover showed relatively consistent differences in the content of micronutrients as influenced by treatments of the systematic variation. The contents of Mn and Cu in the forages were significantly influenced by the application rates of Mn and Cu, respectively. The contents of Fe and Zn in the forages, however, were not significantly different among these treatments. 2. Compared with orchardgrass in the Fe/cu trial, white clover had not only the low content of Cu but also the Cu content and yield of white clover were greatly decreased by the low rate of application of Cu. In the Mn/Zn trial, the $0/100\%$ resulted in the severe decrease of Mn-content in both forages. The low content of Mn in white clover tended to be negatively correlated to the Mn-chlorosis, inferior growth and flowering, and low yield. 3. In the Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn trial, the application with $0/100\%$ and $0/100\%$ resulted in the relatively great decrease of Cu and Mn contents, respectively. These traits in white clover tended to be negatively correlated to the inferior growth and flowering, and low yield 4. In the Fe/Mn/Cu/Zn trial, the content of every main-elements in the forages were increased especially in Mn. In addition, the contents of sub-elements were likely to be somewhat negatively influenced by the treatment of main-element respectively.
