Catalytic Combustion of Carbon Particulate over LaMnO3 Perovskite-Type Oxides (LaMnO3형 페롭스카이트 산화물에서 입자상물질의 촉매연소반응)

  • We have studied the catalytic combustion of soot particulates over perovskite-type oxides prepared by malic acid method, The catalysts were modified to enhance the activity by substitution of metal into A or B site of perovskite oxide. In addition, the reaction conditions such as temperature and $O_2$ concentration were investigated. The partial substitution of alkali metals into A site in the $LaMnO_3$ catalyst, enhanced the catalytic activity in the combustion of carbon particulate and the activity was shown in the order: Cs > K > Na. For the $La_{1-x}Cs_{x}MnO_{3}$ catalysts, the catalytic activity showed the maximum value with x=0.3 but no more increase on the catalytic activity was shown with x > 0.3. For the $La_{0.8}Cs_{0.2}MnO_{3}$ catalyst, the substitution of Fe or Ni increased the ignition temperature. The ignition temperature decreased with an increase of $O_2$ concentration, however, no more increase in the catalytic activity was shown with $O_2$ concentration > 0.2. The introduction of NO into reactants showed no effect on the catalytic activity.

  • Manganese (Mn) oxides in soils and sediments differ in structure and composition. The influence of that diversity on the chromium (Cr) oxidation is the subject of this report. Oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) by coarse clay size Mn oxides (synthetic pyrolusite and natural lithiophorite, todorokite, and bimessite) was studied. Chromium oxidation by Mn oxides was initially fast and followed by a slow reaction. More Cr was oxidized by the Mn oxides at lower pH and higher initial Cr(III) concentration in solution. Birnessite had the highest chromium oxidation capacity per unit external surface area (COCUESA) and lithiophorite had the lowest COCUESA. The kinetics of Cr oxidation and COCUESA of Mn oixdes were apparently controlled by reactivity of surface Mn, mineralogy, and solution properties (pH and Cr(III) concentration).

Studies on the Heavy Metal Content of Ginkgo Leaves Growing in All Around Seoul (서울지역 은행엽중 중금속 함량에 관한 연구)

  • Studies on the heavy metal content of ginkgo leaves growing in all around Seoul. This study was carried out to investigate the concentration of heavy metals and soluble sulfur in ginkgo leaves. These leaves are found growing in park, residential, commercial and industrial areas all around Seoul. These analyzed the quantity of Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Hg and soluble surfur in separate samples of washed and unwashed leaves. The results were as follows: 1. This order of heavey metal concentration was found in Seoul area,: Fe>Mn>Zn>Ni>Pb>Cu>Co>Cd>Hg. 2. Pb concentration was higher in the commercial area than in the other areas, and it concentration in washed leaves was higher 96~100% and unwashed leaves 85~170%. 3. In the residential area Ni concentration was significantly higer where about seven times more Ni as found on the top part of the leaves. 4. Water soluble surfur was higest in the inudstrial area, but the percentage on top of the leaves was only 0.04~0.05% simillar with other area. 5. Fe, Zn and Ni were almost positively correlated to each component but negatively correlated between Mn and souble sulfer. All of content except Mn and Ni were significance between each area in washed and unwashed leaves.

Study of a hybrid process combining ozonation and ceramic membrane for drinking water treatment (I) : manganese removal (정수처리를 위한 전오존-세라믹 막여과 조합공정에 관한 연구(I) : 망간 제거 중심)

  • In this research, the $3.6m^3/day$ scale pilot plant consisting preozonation, coagulation, flocculation, and ceramic membrane processes was operated for long term period to evaluate the validity of ceramic membrane filtration process for treating lake water containing high concentration manganese. The higher concentration of dissolved manganese($Mn^{2+}$) was effectively oxidized to the bigger insoluble colloidal manganese ($MnO^2$) by 1~2 mg/L ozone. The colloidal manganese reacted with coagulant (poly aluminium chloride, PAC) and then formed the big floc. Ceramic membrane rejected effectively manganese floc during membrane filtration. Dissolved organic carbon(DOC) removal was dependent upon $Mn^{2+}$ concentration. While average $Mn^{2+}$ concentration was 0.43 and 0.85 mg/L in raw water, DOC removal rate in preozonation was 26.5 and 13.5%, respectively. The decrease rate of membrane permeability was faster without preozonation than with preozonation while membrane fouling decreased with NOM oxidation by ozone. In conclusion, raw water containing high concentration of manganese can be effectively treated in preozonation-coagulation-ceramic membrane filtration system.

Photoluminescent Properties of $\textrm{Zn}_2\textrm{SiO}_4$:Mn Green Phosphors Prepared by the Solution Reaction Method (액상반응법으로 제조한 $\textrm{Zn}_2\textrm{SiO}_4$:Mn 녹색 형광체의 발광특성)

  • $\textrm{Zn}_{2-x}\textrm{Mn}_{x}\textrm{SiO}_{4}$ green phosphors have been prepared by the solution reaction method and the photoluminescence and crystalline properties were studied as a function of both the firing temperature ($900^{\circ}C$~$1200^{\circ}C$) and the concentration of Mn activator (x=0.01~0.20). Under 147 nm and 254nm and excitation sources, the emission intensity of the phosphors was increased about 4 times increasing firing temperatures from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. From the XRD analysis, $\textrm{Zn}_{2}\textrm{SiO}_{4}$:Mn phosphors fired above $1100^{\circ}C$ showed willemite crystal structure. Under 147nm excitation, the maximum emission intensity was obtained at the Mn concentration of x=0.02 for $\textrm{Zn}_{2-x}\textrm{Mn}_{x}\textrm{SiO}_{4}$ phosphors fired at $1200^{\circ}C$ and the concentration quenching was occurred at the Mn concentration above x=0.10. The phosphor particles showed almost spherical shapes with the average size of around 2~3$\mu\textrm{m}$ by the SEM morphology.

Effects of Manganese Exposure on the Testis Function and Serum Prolactin Concentration in Rat (망간 노출이 흰쥐의 정소기능과 혈청 프로락틴 농도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aimed to examine the testis toxicities of metal compound, manganese (Mn), which may be generated as mist or fume in the industrial sites. As well as serum prolactin (PRL) concentration was analyzed because Mn accumulation in basal ganglia up-regulates serum PRL and hyperprolactinemia consecutively induces the testis toxicity. Male F344 rats were divided into the 4 groups (2 controls and 2 Mn treated groups, n=10) on the basis of the test condition (inhalation, Mn $1.5mg/m^3$ or not) and treatment period (for 4-weeks and 13-weeks). The treatment time was 6 hr. a day, 5 days a week for the whole body. Basic tests including changes in body weight, feed rate were observed. Blood and testis Mn concentration, and testis toxicity test such as the number and deformity test of sperm were also observed. Serum PRL level was analyzed by ELISA to certify the relationship between the Mn induced increase of the serum PRL level and sperm production. Blood and testis Mn concentrations were significantly and dose-dependently increased. Sperm count was decreased in Mn-treatment groups than control in a treatment time dependent manner. Morphological analysis of cauda epidydimal sperm showed that the frequencies of morphologically abnormal sperms such as bent tail and small head were increased in the both Mn-treatment groups than control. A significant increase in serum PRL levels was found in response to Mn treatment but it was not hyperprolactinemia range. These results suggest that treatment of Mn up-regulates the serum PRL concentration and induces the testis toxicity. The No Aversed Effect Level (NOAEL) of inhaled Mn on the male rat testis may be under the $1.5mg/m^3$.

In-Situ Spectroelectrochemical Studies of Manganese(II) Oxidation

  • In-situ spectroelectrochemical studies have been carried out on the oxidation of Mn(II) at platinum, gold, lead dioxide, and bismuth doped lead dioxide electrodes. The Mn(III), $MnO_2$, and/or ${MnO_4}^-$ species are produced depending on experimental conditions employed during electrolysis. Mn(III) is shown to be produced from a very early stage during the anodic potential scan and undergo disproportionation-conproportionation reactions depending on the relative concentration of each species near the electrode surface. An oxidation mechanism consistent with these observations is proposed.

NOx removal of Mn-Cu-TiO2 catalyst for the calcination and oxygen concentration conditions (소성 및 산소농도 조건에 대한 Mn-Cu-TiO2 촉매의 탈질 특성)

  • DeNOx catalysts composed of Mn, Cu and $TiO_2$ were prepared and tested for $NH_3$-SCR. The performance of each catalyst was studied for the NOx removal efficiency while changing the calcination temperature, reaction time, and oxygen concentration. The hydrogen conversion efficiency of a calcined catalyst was measured at the $H_2$-TPR system. The change in the specific surface area of catalyst according to the calcination temperature was analyzed. As a result, the proper calcination temperature was approximately $300^{\circ}C$. If the calcination temperature is increased to $500^{\circ}C$, the NOx removal efficiency of Mn and Cu constituents is largely decreased at the low temperature range. Oxygen in flue gas is an important parameter in the SCR reaction and optimal oxygen concentration is approximately 8 vol.%.

Luminescence Properties of Zn2SiO4:Mn, M(M=Cr, Ti) Green Phosphors Prepared by Sol-gel Method (졸-겔법으로 제조한 Zn2SiO4:Mn, M(M=Cr, Ti) 녹색 형광체의 발광특성)

  • In order to improve the photoluminescent properties and crystallinity, Zn$_2$SiO$_4$:Mn, M(M=Cr, Ti) phosphors were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The willemite single phase was obtained at 110$0^{\circ}C$, which is lower temperature than that of the conventional solid-state reaction (130$0^{\circ}C$). The characteristics of fired samples were obtained by a 147 nm excitation source under VUV (Vacuum Ultraviolet). To investigation the effect of co-dopant, the content of Mn and the ratio of $H_2O$ to TEOS was fixed as 2 ㏖% and 36. 1, respectively. The highest emission intensity was obtained when the concentration of Cr and Ti was 0.1 ㏖% relative to Zn$_2$SiO$_4$:Mn. While the emission intensity decrease continuously the decay time improved as increased the Cr concentration. In the case of Ti added samples, however, the emission intensity increase up to 2 ㏖% concentration.

Oxidation of 2,6-Dimethylnaphthalene by Co-Mn-Br Based Homogeneous Catalyst (Co-Mn-Br계 균일촉매를 이용한 2,6-Dimethylnaphthalene의 산화반응)

  • The catalytic performance of Co-Mn-Br system was performed in the 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene(DMN) oxidation at relatively mild reaction conditions such as $160^{\circ}C$ and $6kg/cm^2$. Experiments were conducted using a $2{\ell}$ batch reactor with varying the concentrations of catalysts. The reaction route of DMN oxidation was considered by measuring the concentration of intermediate species. As the intermediate species, 2-formyl-6-naphthoic acid, 2-methyl-6-naphthoic acid and 2-hydroxymethyl-6-methylnaphthalene are found. It was found that the yield of 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid(NDA) is largely dependent on the Co and Br concentrations. In addition, it was observed that color-b was closely related with Mn concentration in this experimental range. The burning loss of solvent could be reduced by controlling the concentration of Mn and Br. Addition of small amount of Ce and Cu compounds led to increase the NDA yields and decrease the burning amount of solvent.
