  • The nutritional worth of Phalaris minor seeds was assessed in comparison to conventional cereal grains like maize and wheat. P. minor seeds had higher total ash and cell wall constituents as compared to wheat and maize grains. The CP content of P. minor was comparable to wheat grains but higher than maize grains. The in vitro studies revealed that the net gas production and availability of ME from P. minor was comparable to that of maize but the digestibility of nutrients was significantly (p<0.05) lower than that of conventional cereal grains. The digestion kinetic parameters for DM and CP revealed that P. minor had the highest (p<0.05) soluble fraction (a) followed by wheat and maize. Reverse trend was observed for insoluble but potentially degradable fraction (b). The effective and true DM and CP degradability was significantly (p<0.05) higher in wheat grains followed by that in P. minor and maize grains. The digestibility of OM and NDF was not affected by replacing cereal grains in concentrate mixture with P. minor seeds up to 75 per cent level. But the availability of ME from concentrate mixtures was comparable to control only up to 50% level of replacement. Replacement of cereal grains with P. minor did not affect the rapidly soluble fraction and insoluble but potentially degradable fraction of concentrate mixture containing P. minor up to 75 per cent, but it was depressed significantly at 100% replacement level. The effective and true degradability of DM of concentrate mixtures containing P. minor from 50 to 100 per cent was comparable to that of conventional concentrate mixture (CCM). The wheat based concentrate mixtures showed higher net gas production (208 vs. 201 ml/g DM/24 h), digestibility of nutrients and ME availability (9.64 vs. 9.54 MJ/kg DM) as compared to maize based concentrate mixture. The wheat based concentrate mixture had significantly (p<0.05) higher rumen undegradable fraction and effective degradability. The data conclusively revealed that conventional cereal grains could be replaced with P.minor seeds up to 75 per cent without affecting the availability of nutrients.

  • Infrared emissions from spherical dust, clouds are calculated using quasi-diffusion method. We have employed graphite-silicate mixture with power-law size distribution for the dust model. The grains are assumed to be heated and cooled by radiative processes only. The primary heating source is diffuse interstellar radiation field. hut the cases with an embedded source are also considered. Since graphite grains have higher temperature than silicate grains, the observed IR emission is mainly due to graphite grains, unless the fraction of graphite grains is negligibly small. The color temperature of Bok globules obtained from IRAS 60 and $100{\mu}m$ data are found to be consistent with the dust cloud with graphite-silicate mixture exposed to average interstellar radiation field. The color temperature is sensitive to the external radiation field, but rather insensitive to the size distribution of the grains. We found that the density distribution can be recovered outside the beam size using the inversion technique that assumes negligible optical depth. However, the information within the beam size is lost for if beam convolved intensity distributions are used in deriving density profile.

  • This short communication reports on the experiment which demonstrates that superhard nanostructured films with hardness of about 40 GPa and greater can be composed not only of two or more nanocrystalline and/or amorphous phases of different materials, as it is in the case of nanocomposite coatings, but also that can be formed by a mixture of small (<10 nm) nanocrystalline grains of the same material with different crystallographic orientation and/or lattice structures. This finding opens new possibilities to develop advanced nanostructured materials with enhanced physical and functional properties.

  • Si and ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder mixtures added with 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ were reacted under 5 MPa nitrogen pressure. The reaction products contained ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ particles with elongated shapes. Length and width of the elongated grains were the maximum when the starting powder mixture of 50 wt% Si - 47 wt% ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ and 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ was used. Aspect ratio of the elongated grains were between 4.4 and 5. When the starting powder mixture contained 70 wt% Si, large particles with irregular shapes appeared. Meanwhile, the reaction did not proceed when the starting powder mixture contained 30 wt% Si and less. The SHS product was easy to crush and the elongated particles obtained from the starting powder mixtures of 40 wt% Si - 57 wt% ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ - 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ and 50 wt% Si - 47 wt% ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ - 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ were good candidates for the seeds.

  • Hydraulically filled ground is formed by the settling of soil grains from the mixture of soil grains and water. It was generally known that the settling speed of the soil grains in governed by Stokes low. In the case of clayed dredged material, the shape of soil grains is not round, the surface of the soil grains is relatively large compared to the weight of soil grains and inter-grain ionic force is relatively large compared to the wight of soil grains. By this reason the settling and consolidation behavior of hydraulically filled quite different from that of Stokes law. This study investigated the settling and consolidation behavior of hydraulically filled materials of Yeochon industrial complex by large scale laboratory settling & consolidation container. The test results showed tat actual settling speed of soil grains in quite large compared to that of Stokes law. It was turned out that this phenomenon was due to the aggregation of soil grains. Also, it was truned out that the void ration and water content after the completion of settling process was 8.7 and 322% respectively. The consolidtion settlement of clayey hydraulic fill material was predicated better by "incremental small strain" consolidation concept than classical Terzaghj's consolidation concept (infinitesimal strain).

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of antioxidant activities in some traditional and a few super food mixed rice. Amongst nine chosen samples, traditional five grains were analyzed and results revealed highest content of crude-protein ($8.05{\pm}1.11%$) and lowest crude-fat content ($1.74{\pm}0.29%$); however, the calories was found to be relatively low ($358.05{\pm}0.34kcal$) in the samples. Total polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins were extracted from nine samples with 80% methanol and biochemical activity was measured. The content of total polyphenols, flavonoids and total tannin was $206.5{\sim}452.0{\mu}g/mL$, $0.126{\sim}0.340{\mu}g/mL$, and $548.1{\sim}774.8{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The traditional five grains showed the highest values except for DPPH radical scavenging activity. DPPH radical scavenging activity was 5 to 40.3% higher in eight samples than the traditional five grains sample. From these results, it is conjectured that a mixture of five grains, might exhibit equal or considerably higher effect as healthy diet when compared to super food. The results from this study would serve as basic data for the use of traditional mixed grains rice diet for good health.

  • TiN films were deposited onto high speed steel(SKH9) and silicon wafer by plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition(PACVD) using a TiCl4/N2/H2/Ar gas mixture. The effects of deposition temperature, R.F. power, and H2 concentration on the deposition of TiN were studied. The residual chlorine content and the microhardness of TiN films were also investigated. It was found that TiN films grew with a columnar structure of a strong (200) preferred orientation regardless of the substrate type and the deposition variables. The TiN films consisted of columnar-grains of about 50 to 100 nm in diameter. The columnar grains themselves contained much finer fibrous grains. As deposition temperature increased, the residual chlorine content decreased sharply. R. F. powder enhanced the deposition rate largely. Increasing of H2 concentration had little effect on the residual chlorine.

  • Baekhaju is commonly called Bangmoonju. However comparing Baekhaju while Baekhaju used distiller's grains, Bangmoonju did not use them. Baekhaju used only nonglutinous rice, however, Bangmoonju used glutinous rice or a mixture of glutinous rice and nonglutinous rice. Baekhaju in Chinese, which was misrecored on Baekhaju in Korean from 15th century. However, Baekhaju should be distingnish from Baekhwaju, which is made buy addition of many flowers in various wine. Baekhaju used distiller's grains in the first step of its manufacture procedure. For the fermentation of Baekhaju, one of the three bases, which are rice gruel, rice cake or 구멍떡 was added to distiller's grains. Flours and nuruk are also added. In the second step, steamed water-soaked rice and nuruk was added up to the Baekhaju-base which was got from the first step.

  • The effect of dissolved Ca ion from plaster mold during slip casting on the microstructure and fracture toughness of high-purity sintered alumina were investigated. When the alumina slip containing 1000 ppm MgO was casted on a calcined alumina mold, the sintered compact had a homogeneous microstructure with equiaxed grains. However, when the same slip was casted on a plaster mold, the sintered compact consisted of the mixture of equiaxed and elongated grains. This inhomogeneous microstructure was also observed in the sintered alumina doped with 100o ppm MgO and 100 ppm CaO whose compact was prepared on the calcined alumina mold indicating that the inhomogeneity was caused by CaO. It was found that the specimen containing both MgO and CaO had higher fracture toughness than that containing MgO only. The enhanced fracture toughness by CaO is probably due to the crack deflection along the boundaries of the elongated grains.

  • W-Ti-C-N based multiphase hard materials have been prepared from WC/TiN powder mixture. By sintering at and above 190$0^{\circ}C$, the two phases of powder mixture has transformed into intermixed W, W2C and Ti(C, N) phases. For the temperature range between 180$0^{\circ}C$ and 210$0^{\circ}C$, the sintered or hot pressed samples show maximum density and hardness. The seems that metallic W grains enhance the fracture toughness of materials. The wear resistance of the material is found to increase with increasing hardness.
