  • Experimental measurements are reported and compared with the results of a two-dimensional fluid simulation for the investigation of the discharge characteristics regarding the change of the mixture ratio of Ne-Xe-He noble gases. The increase of Xe contents results in the increases of luminance and luminous efficiency while it also results in the increase of the breakdown voltage and the discharge time lag. The addition of He gas increases the brightness and the luminance efficiency. When Xe partial pressure is low, the luminance efficiency increases with the amount of He at the same total pressure. When Xe partial pressure is high, however, the luminance efficiency has a maximum value when the partial pressure of He is about 10% of the total pressure for a standard AC PDP cell with Xe fraction of $10{\sim}30%$.

  • A numerical parametric study is conducted to simulate shock-induced combustion with a variation in freestream conditions. The analysis is limited to inviscid flow and includes chmical nonequilibrium. A steady combustion front is established if the freestream Mach number is above the Chapman-Jouguet speed of the mixture. On the other, an unsteady reaction fi:ont is established if the freestream Mach number is below or at the Chapman-Jouguet speed of the mixture. The three cases have been simulated for Machs 4.18, 5.11, and 6.46 with a projectile diameter of 15 mm. Machs 4.18 and 5.11 shows an unsteady reaction front, whereas Mach 6.46 represents a steady reaction front. Thus Chapman-Jouguet speed is one of deciding factor for the instabilities to trigger. The instabilities of the chemical front with a variation of projectiles diameters will be investigated.

  • Large-scale fuel tanks emit massive amount of hardly-combustible VOC mixtures which are light hydrocarbon species in dilution with nitrogen and carbon dioxide. We have developed a lab-scale burner to combust those VOC mixtures by use of a turbulent partially-premixed flame as a pilot flame. For a higher HC treatment ratio, the mixture gases were reformed by a rotating arc plasma device. The results showed that the nitrogen mole fraction and the injecting speed of the VOC mixture influence on the performance of the burner. It was also found that the size of the pilot flame and the power supplied to the plasma device determine the overall HC treatment ratio and the concentrations of CO and NOx in the exhaust gas.

  • The characteristics of hydrogen-oxygen mixture gas generation stack was experimentally studied in terms of efficiency. For this purpose, the mixture gas generation stack was fabricated by connecting 7 cells in series following the Tero Ranta report. In order to avoid the instrument inaccuracy, all measuring equipments were re-tested and calibrated by Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS) certified laboratories. Since the amount of produced gas is most crucial in determining the efficiency, two gas collecting methods such as bottle trap method and wet gas meter method were adopted. From the experimental results, it was found that both KOH fume and steam evaporated along with hydrogen-oxygen mixture gas, and these by-product gases could cause the misestimation of the stack efficiency. The current, voltage, and energy efficiencies of the hydrogen-oxygen mixture gas generation stack was evaluated based upon the stack efficiency calculation method summarized in this work.

  • Combustion Characteristics and quenching criteria of micro combustor in various condition was exploited experimentally. Two different gases were used, and various geometric matrixes were considered to figure out quenching characteristic of micro combustor. The micro combustor studied in this study was constant volume, and has cylindrical shape. Geometric parameter of combustor was defined to be combustor height and diameter. The effect of height was exploited parametrically as 1 mm, 2mm and 3mm and the effect of diameter was parameterized to be 7.5mm and 15mm. Three different combustibles. (1) Stoichiometric mixture of methane and are, (2) Stoichiometric mixture of hydrogen and air and (3) Mixture of hydrogen and air with fuel stoichiometry of two were used. Pressure transition during combustion process was recovered. The ratio of maximum pressure to initial pressure responded favorably with the change of height of combustor and the initial pressure, the maximum pressure was also increased. The flame propagation was observed only when a specific condition was satisfied. From the experiment the condition that guarantees stable propagation of flame was tabulated. The tabulated results includes criteria of quenching according to combustor height, combustor diameter, species of fuel and initial pressure.

  • In the present study, the focus is on the analysis of carbothermal reduction of oxide powder prepared from waste WC/Co hardmetal by solid carbon under a stream of argon for the recycling of the WC/Co hard-metal. The oxide powder was prepared by the combination of the oxidation and crushing processes using the waste $WC-8 wt.\%Co$ hardmetal as the raw material. This oxide powder was mixed with carbon black, and then this mixture was carbothermally reduced under a flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase structure and gases discharge of the mixture during carbothermal reduction was analysed using XRD and gas analyzer. The oxide powder prepared from waste $WC-8wt.\%Co$ hardmetal has a mixture of $WO_{3} and CoWO_{4}$. This oxide powder reduced at about $850^{\circ}C$, formed tungsten carbides at about $950^{\circ}C$, and then fully transformed to a mixed state of tungsten carbide (WC) and cobalt at about $1100^{\circ}C$ by solid carbon under a stream of argon. The WC/Co composite powder synthesized at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours from oxide powder of waste $WC-8wt.\%Co$ hardmetal has an average particle size of $0.3 {\mu}m$.

  • The combustion characteristics of methane/hydrogen pre-mixed flame have been investigated with swirl stabilized flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor with constant heat load of 5.81 kW. Hydrogen/methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through a burner nozzle with different degrees of swirl angle. The effects of hydrogen addition and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using particle image velocimetry (PIV), micro-thermocouples, various optical interference filters and gas analyzers to provide information about flow velocity, temperature distributions, and species concentrations of the reaction field. The results show that higher swirl intensity creates more recirculation flow, which reduces the temperature of the reaction zone and, consequently, reduces the thermal NO production. The distributions of flame radicals (OH, CH, C2) are dependent more on the swirl intensity than the percentage of hydrogen added to methane fuel. The NO concentration at the upper part of the reaction zone is increased with an increase in hydrogen content in the fuel mixture because higher combustibility of hydrogen assists to promote faster chemical reaction, enabling more expansion of the gases at the upper part of the reaction zone, which reduces the recirculation flow. The CO concentration in the reaction zone is reduced with an increase in hydrogen content because the amount of C content is relatively decreased.

  • Adsorption equilibria of the gases $H_2$, $CH_4$, and $C_2H_4$ and their binary mixtures on activated carbon (Calgon co.) have been measured by static volumetric method in the pressure range of 0 to 18 atm at temperatures of 293.15, 303.15, and 313.15 K. From the parameters obtained from single component adsorption isotherm, multi-component adsorption equilibria could be predicted and compared with experimental data. The binary experimental data were applied to four models : extended Langmuir, extended Langmuir-Freundlich, Ideal Adsorbed Solution theory (IAST), and Vacancy Solution Model (VSM). The models were found to describe the experimental data with a reasonable accuracy. Extended L-F model predicts equilibria of mixture better than any other model.

  • In this research polyimide, Matrimid 5218, hollow fiber membrane was used to recover sulfur hexafluoride($SF_6$) which is one of the six greenhouse gases from $N_2/SF_6$ mixture gas. Fibers were spun from using dry-wet phase inversion method. The module was manufactured by fabricating fibers after surface coating with silicone elastomer. The scanning electron microscopy(SEM) studies showed that the produced fibers typically had an asymmetric structure; a dense top layer supported by a sponge-like substructure. The developed module had a permeance of 0.78-1.36 GPU for $N_2$ with $N_2/SF_6$ selectivity of 2.44-5.08 at various pressure and temperature. For recovery of $SF_6$, a membrane module and 10 vol.% $SF_6$ from $N_2/SF_6$ mixture gas was used. The effects of various operating condition such as pressure, temperature, and retentate side flow rate were tested. When pressure and temperature were increased and retentate flow rate was decreased, the $SF_6$ purity in recovered gas was increased up to 37.5 vol.% with decreasing recovery ratio. When retentate flow rate was increased pressure and temperature was decreased, the $SF_6$ recovery ratio in retentate side was increased up to 89% with decreasing the $SF_6$ purity in retentate side.
