  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted considerable attention as possible routes to device miniaturization due to their excellent mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties. These properties show great potential for devices such as field emission displays, CNT based transistors, and bio-sensors. The metals such as nickel, cobalt, gold, iron, platinum, and palladium are used as the catalysts for the CNT growth. In this study, diamond-like carbon (DLC) was used for CNT growth as a nonmetallic catalyst layer. DLC films were deposited by a radio frequency (RF) plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) method with a mixture of methane and hydrogen gases. CNTs were synthesized by a hot filament plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (HF-PECVD) method with ammonia (NH3) as a pretreatment gas and acetylene (C2H2) as a carbon source gas. The grown CNTs and the pretreated DLC filmswere observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) measurement, and the structure of the grown CNTs was analyzed by high resolution transmission scanning electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Also, using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) measurement, we confirmed that only the carbon component remained on the substrate.

Surface modification of $TiO_2$ by atmospheric pressure plasma

  • To improve surface wettability, each sample was treated by atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system. Argon and oxygen gases were used for treatment gas to modify the $TiO_2$ surface by APP with RF power range from 50 to 200 W. Water contact angle was decreased from $20^{\circ}$ to $10^{\circ}$ with argon only. However, water contact angle was decreased from $20^{\circ}$ to < $1^{\circ}$ with mixture of argon and oxygen. Water contact angle with $O_2$ plasma was lower than water contact angle with Ar plasma at the same RF power. It seems to be increasing the polar force of $TiO_2$ surface. Also, analysis result of X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) shows the increase of intensity of O1s shoulder peak, resulting in increasing of surface wettability by APP. Moreover, each water contact angle increased according to increase past time. However, contact angle increase with plasma treatment was lower than without plasma treatment.   • A stainless steel autoclave reactor, which is the property of Pacific Northwest Laboratories(PNL) and located in PNL, was acted for pyrolysis and gasification of sawdust, ricestraw, and ricehusk. The initial reaction temperature of this reactor was 300$^{\circ}C$, and up to 500$^{\circ}C$ to complete pyrolysis and gasification reaction. The maximum exerted pressure on this reactor was 800 psig. In order to examine the effect of catalyst on reaction temperature, $K_2CO_3$, and nickel/alkali carbonate catalyst mixture were also used. The experimental results obtained with this reactor indicated that good yields of methane-rich gas(exceeding 40% methane) can be produced. The product gas mixtures were also identified to be CO. $CO_2$, $C_2H_4$, and $CH_3CHO$ etc. by Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometer.

Effect of ON/OFF Cycles of Ar Gas on Structural and Optical Properties of ZnO Nanostructure Grown by Vapor Phase Transport

  • ZnO nanostructures were synthesized by a vapor phase transport process in a single-zone furnace within a horizontal quartz tube with an inner diameter of 38 mm and a length of 485 mm. The ZnO nanostructures were grown on Au-catalyzed Si(100) substrates by using a mixture of zinc oxide and graphite powders. The growth of ZnO nanostructures was conducted at $800^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. High-purity Ar and $O_2$ gases were pushed through the quartz tube during the process at a flow rate of 100 and 10 sccm, respectively. The sequence of ON/OFF cycles of the Ar gas flow was repeated, while the $O_2$ flow is kept constant during the growth time. The Ar gas flow was ON for 1 min/cycle and that was OFF for 2 min/cycle. The structure and optical properties of the ZnO nanostructures were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent photoluminescence. The preferred orientation of the ZnO nanostructures was along c-axis with hexagonal wurtzite structure.

Synthesis of Nickel and Copper Nanopowders by Plasma Arc Evaporation

  • In this study, the synthesis of nickel nanoparticles and copper nanospheres for the potential applications of MLCC electrode materials has been studied by plasma arc evaporation method. The change in the broad distribution of the size of nickel and copper nanopowders is successfully controlled by manifesting proper mixture of gas ambiance for plasma generation in the size range of 20 to 200 nm in diameter. The factors affecting the mean diameter of the nanopowder was studied by changing the composition of reactive gases, indicating that nitrogen enhances the formation of larger particles compared to hydrogen gas. The morphologies and particle sizes of the metal nanoparticles were observed by SEM, and ultrathin oxide layers on the powder surface generated during passivation step have been confirmed using TEM. The metallic FCC structure of the nanoparticles was confirmed using powder X-ray diffraction method.

전도성 고분자가 첨가된 생체 모방형 분자 각인 고분자 테르펜 센서 (Biomimetic MIP Terpene Sensors Adding Conductive Polymers)

  • Biomimetic terpene sensors which have high sensitivity and stability have been fabricated using moleculary imprinted polymer (MIP) technology. Since it is impossible to make a resistive type sensor due to the high resistance of MIP, we improved the sensor by adding conductive polymers. We investigated the sensitivity of resistive type sensors with nano particles depending on the amount of conductive polymers. The MIP membrane contained the methacrylic acid as functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross linker, which formed specific cavities originated by the target terpene molecules. The mixture of MIP and the conductive polymer was coated on the patterns of interdigit electrodes on the alumina substrate. The fabricated sensors showed their highest specific sensitivities exposed to 500 ppm target gases : limonene 0.055 at 40% of amount of conductive polymers and geraniol $5.84{\times}10^{-4}$ at 20% of amount of conductive polymers. In conclusion, we found that the terpene sensors are affected by the target molecules, functional monomers and the conductive polymers.

A HYDROGEN FUELLED V-8 ENGINE FOR CITY-BUS APPLICATION

  • Hydrogen is seen as one of the important energy vectors of the next century. Hydrogen as a renewable energy source, provides the potential for a sustainable development particularly in the transportation sector. Hydrogen driven vehicles reduce both local as well as global emissions. The laboratory of transporttechnology (University of Gent) converted a GM/Crusader V-8 engine for hydrogen use. Once the engine is optimised, it will be built in a low-floor midsize hydrogen city bus for public demonstration. For a complete control of the combustion process and to increase the resistance to backfire (explosion of the air-fuel mixture in the inlet manifold), a sequential timed multipoint injection of hydrogen and an electronic management system is chosen. The results as a function of the engine parameters (ignition timing. injection timing and duration, injection pressure) we given. Special focus is given to topics related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel: ignition characteristics (importance of electrode distance), quality of the lubricating oil (crankcase gases with high contents of hydrogen), oxygen sensors (very lean operating conditions), noise reduction (configuration and length of inlet pipes). The advantages and disadvantages of a power regulation only by the air to fuel ratio (as for diesel engines) against a throttle regulation (normal gasoline or gas regulation) are examined. Finally the goals of the development of the engine are reached: power output of 90 kW, torque of 300 Nm, extremely low emission levels and backfire-safe operation.

플라즈마 침질탄화처리된 순철의 화합물층 특성 (The Characteristics of Compound Layers Formed during Plasma Nitrocarburising in Pure Iron)

  • Ferritic plasma nitrocarburising was performed on pure iron using a modified DC plasma unit. This investigation was carried out with various gas compositions which consisted of nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon monoxide gases, and various gas pressures for 3 hours at $570^{\circ}C$. After treatment, the different cooling rates(slow cooling and fast cooling) were used to investigate its effect on the structure of the compound layer. The ${\varepsilon}$ phase occupied the outer part of the compound layer and ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase existed between the ${\varepsilon}$ phase and the diffusion zone. The gas composition of the atmosphere influenced the constitution of the compound layer produced, i.e. high nitrogen contents were essential for the production of ${\varepsilon}$ phase compound layer. It was found that with increasing carbon content in the gas mixture the compound layer thickness increased up to 10%. In the gas pressure around 3 mbar, the compound layer characteristics were slightly effected by gas pressure. However, in the low gas pressure and high gas pressure, the compound layer characteristics were significantly changed. The constitution of the compound layer was altered by varying the cooling rate. A large amount of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase was transformed from the ${\varepsilon}$ phase during slow cooling.

  • Due to its carbon-neutral nature, biogas generated from anaerobic digestion or fermentation of biodegradable wastes is one of the important renewable energy sources to reduce global warming. It is mainly composed of methane and various inert gases such as $CO_2$ and $N_2$, and the actual composition of biogas significantly varies depending on the origin of anaerobic digestion process. Therefore, in order to effectively utilize this fuel as an energy source for electricity, it is important to develop power generation engines which can successfully apply biogas with significant composition variations. In this study, efforts have been made to develop a diesel-biogas duel fuel engine as a way to achieve such a stable power generation. The effects of diesel fuel injection quantity and pressure on stable combustion and engine performance were investigated, and an impact of diesel fuel atomization was discussed. The engine test results show that there exists a 2 stage combustion which consists of diesel pilot fuel burning and premixed biogas/air mixture burning in dual fuel engine operation and optimum diesel injection parameters were suggested for biogases with various compositions and heating values.

  • 금속과 판유리를 이용한 도파관 탄산가스 레이저를 제작하고 출력특성을 조사하였다. 도파관의 길이는 50cm, 내부 단면적은 $6\times 6\ttextrm{mm}^{2}$이며 13.56MHz의 고주파로 횡여기시키는 방식이다. 가스 밀폐형으로 동작될 때 입력전력과 가스압력 변화에 의한 레이저 출력의 측정 결과 가스 분압비 $He:CO_{2}:N_{2}:Xe= 6:1:2:1$, 전체 가스압력 50Torr, 고주파 입럭전력이 180W인 조건에서 최대출력 9.5W로 발진하고 있다.
