  • An optimum route to fabricate a hybrid-structured W powder composed of nano and micro size powders was investigated. The mixture of nano and micro W powders was prepared by a ball milling and hydrogen reduction process for $WO_3$ and W powders. Microstructural observation for the ball-milled powder mixtures revealed that the nano-sized $WO_3$ particles were homogeneously distributed on the surface of large W powders. The reduction behavior of $WO_3$ powder was analyzed by a temperature programmed reduction method with different heating rates in Ar-10% $H_2$ atmosphere. The activation energies for the reduction of $WO_3$, estimated by the slope of the Kissinger plot from the amount of reaction peak shift with heating rates, were measured as 117.4 kJ/mol and 94.6 kJ/mol depending on reduction steps from $WO_3$ to $WO_2$ and from $WO_2$ to W, respectively. SEM and XRD analysis for the hydrogen-reduced powder mixture showed that the nano-sized W particles were well distributed on the surface of the micro-sized W powders.

  • PLA, PGA and PLGA films were treated with chloric acid mixture solution [70% perchloric acid (HClO$_4$)/potassium chlorate (KClO$_3$) aq. saturated solution, 3 : 2] to increase surface wettability and thus cell compatibility. The surface-treated PLA, PGA, and PLGA films were characterized by the measurement of water contact angle, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Surface wettability of chloric acid-treated PLA, PGA, and PLGA film surfaces was gradually increased with increase of treatment time. Unlike EtOH pre-treatment, chloric acid-treated polymer films maintain hydrophilic surface after drying. In cell adhesion test, fibroblasts were cultured on the chloric acid-treated film surfaces for 1 and 2 days. As the surface wettability increased, the cell adhesion on the surface were increased. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the surface wettability of polymer plays an important role for cell adhesion and proliferation behavior.

  • In computer games, the level design and balance of characters are the key features for developing interesting games. Level designers make decision to change the parameters and opponent behaviors in order to avoid the player getting extremely frustrated with the improper level. Generally, opponent behavior is defined by static script, this causes the games to have static difficulty level and static environment. Therefore, it is difficult to keep track of the user playing interest, because a player can easily adapt to changeless repetition. In this paper, we propose a dynamic scripting method that able to maintain the level designers' intention where user enjoys the game by adjusting the opponent behavior while playing the game. The player's countermeasure pattern for dynamic level design is modeled using a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM). The proposed method is applied to a shooting game, and the experimental results maintain the degree of interest intended by the level designer.

  • The optimum route to fabricate nano-sized Fe-50 wt% Co and hydrogen-reduction behavior of calcined Fe-/Conitrate was investigated. The powder mixture of metal oxides was prepared by solution mixing and calcination of Fe-/Co-nitrate. A DTA-TG and microstructural analysis revealed that the nitrates mixture by the calcination at $300^{\circ}C$ for 2 h was changed to Fe-oxide/$Co_3O_4$ composite powders with an average particle size of 100 nm. The reduction behavior of the calcined powders was analyzed by DTA-TG in a hydrogen atmosphere. The composite powders of Fe-oxide and Co3O4 changed to a Fe-Co phase with an average particle size of 40 nm in the temperature range of $260-420^{\circ}C$. In the TG analysis, a two-step reduction process relating to the presence of Fe3O4 and a CoO phase as the intermediate phase was observed. The hydrogen-reduction kinetics of the Fe-oxide/Co3O4 composite powders was evaluated by the amount of peak shift with heating rates in TG. The activation energies for the reduction, estimated by the slope of the Kissinger plot, were 96 kJ/mol in the peak temperature range of $231-297^{\circ}C$ and 83 kJ/mol of $290-390^{\circ}C$, respectively. The reported activation energy of 70.4-94.4 kJ/mol for the reduction of Fe- and Co-oxides is in reasonable agreement with the measured value in this study.

  • Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a microbial storage polymer with biodegradable properties. In order to improve the cell compatibility of PHBV surfaces, the physicochemical treatments have been demonstrated. In this study, physical method was corona discharge treatment and chemical method was chloric acid mixture solution treatment. The physicochemically treated PHBV film surfaces were characterized by the measurement of water contact angle, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The water contact angle of the physicochemically treated PHBV surfaces decreased from 75 to 30~40 degree, increased hydrophilicity. due to the introduction of oxygen-based functional group onto the PHBV backbone chain. The mouse NIH/3T3 fibroblasts cultured onto the physicochemically treated PHBV film surfaces with different wettability. The effect of the PHBV surface with different wettability was determined by SEM as counts of cell number and [$^3$H]thymidine incorporation as measures of cell proliferation. As the surface wettability increased, the number of the cell adhered and proliferated on the surface was increased. The result seems closely related with the serum protein adsorption on the physicochemically treated PHBV surface. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the surface wettabilily of biodegradable polymer as the PHBV plays an important role for cell adhesion and proliferation behavior for biomedical application.

  • This study explores the performance of pile foundations in highly expansive soil, incorporating magnesium oxide-based refractory materials. A controlled model chamber, housing a fixed pile, was utilized to induce ground expansion through fused magnesia (FM). The investigation focused on measuring the vertical displacement of FM-sand mixtures and the axial load on the pile in relation to depth and time. The study varied the amount of FM content (FMc) at 30%, 50%, and 70%. The upward movement exhibited an augmentation with increasing FMc, tapering off with depth as accumulation progressed toward the mixture surface. Compression and tensile forces were both evident along the pile for FMc at 30% and 50%, while only a tensile force was observed at an FMc of 70%. These results offer valuable insights for the analysis of pile behavior within FM-sand mixtures.

  • This study investigated the effects of revolution speed and ball size in planetary milling on the microstructure and dehydrogenation behavior of TiH2 powder. The particle size analysis showed that the large particles present in the raw powder were effectively refined as the revolution speed increased, and when milled at 500 rpm, the median particle size was 1.47 ㎛. Milling with a mixture of balls of two or three sizes was more effective in refining the raw powder than milling with balls of a single size. A mixture of 3 mm and 5 mm diameter balls was the optimal condition for particle refinement, and the measured median particle size was 0.71 ㎛. The dependence of particle size on revolution speed and ball size was explained by changes in input energy and the number of contact points of the balls. In the milled powder, the endothermic peak measured using differential thermal analysis was observed at a relatively low temperature. This finding was interpreted as the activation of a dehydrogenation reaction, mainly due to the increase in the specific surface area and the concentration of lattice defects.

  • In case of a high-speed D.I. diesel engine. the injected fuel spray is unavoidable that the impinging on the wall of piston cavity and in this case the geometry of piston cavity has a great influence on the atomization structure and air flow fields. In the field of combustion and in many other spray applications, there are clear evidence of correlation between spray structure and emission of pollutants. Ordinary, the combustion chamber of driving engine have unsteady turbulent flow be attendant on such as the change of temperature, velocity and pressure. So the analysis of spray behavior is difficult. In this study, a single spray was impinged on each cavity wall at indicated angle in a quiescent atmosphere at room temperature and pressure, as being the simplest case, and 3 types of piston cavity such as Dish, Toroidal and Re-entrant type was tested for analyzing the influence of cavity geometry. And hot wire probe was used for analyze non-steady flow characteristics of impinging spray, and to investigate the behavior of spray, the aspects of concentration c(t), standard deviation $\sigma(t)$ and variation factor (v.f.) was measured with the lapse of time.

  • This paper presents a series of conventional undrained triaxial compression tests conducted to determine the effect of both tire crumbs and cement addition on Narli sand specimens. The tire crumb contents and cement contents were 3%, 7%, 15%; and 1%, 3%, 5% by dry weight of the sand specimens respectively. Specimens were prepared at about 35% relative density, cured during overnight (about 17 hours) for artificially bonding under a 100 kPa effective stress (confining pressure of 500 kPa with a back pressure of 400 kPa), and then sheared. Deviatoric stress-axial strain, pore water pressure-axial strain behavior, and Young's modulus of the specimens at various mixture ratios of tire crumb/cement/sand were measured. Test results indicated that the addition of tire crumb to sand decreases Young's modulus, deviatoric stress and brittleness, and increase pore water pressure generation. The addition of cement to sand with tire crumbs increases deviatoric stress, Young's modulus, and changes its ductile behavior to a more brittle one. The results suggest that specimen formation in the way used here could reduce the tire disposal problem in not only economically, and environmentally, but also more effectively beneficial way for some geotechnical applications.

  • The influence of fuel spray characteristics on engine performance has been known as one of the major concerns to Improve fuel economy and to reduce exhaust emissions. In general, the UBHC(Unburned Hydrocarbon) emission could be reduced by decreasing the droplet size of the fuel sprays. In PFI (Port Fuel Injection) gasoline engines, the mixture of air and fuel would not be uniform under a certain condition, because the breakup and production of spray droplets are made in a short distance between the fuel injector and intake valve sheat. In this study, were investigated the transient spray characteristics and dynamic behavior of droplets from 2holes-2sprays and 4holes-2sprays type injectors used in PFI gasoline engine. Mean droplet size and optical concentration were measured by LDPA (Laser Diffraction Particle size Analyzer). The variation of droplet mean diameter and optical concentration were measured for understanding the behavior of unsteady spray.
