  • Diesel engines with compression-ignition type have superior thermal efficiency, durability and reliability compared to gasoline engine. To control emitted gas from the engines, it can be applied to alternative fuel without any modification to the engine. Therefore, in this study, as a basic study for applying emulsified fuel to the actual diesel engine, analysis of spray behavior characteristics of emulsified fuel was carried out simultaneously by experimental and numerical method. The emulsified fuel consist of diesel, hydrogen peroxide, and surfactant. The surfactant for manufacturing emulsified fuel is comprised of span 80 and tween 80 mixed as 9:1 and fixed with 3% of the total volume of the emulsified fuel. In addition, six kinds of emulsified fuel(EF0, EF2, EF12, EF22, EF32, and EF42) were manufactured according to the mixing ratio of hydrogen peroxide. The droplet and spray experiments were performed to observe the behavior characteristics of the emulsified fuel. The numerical analysis was carried out using ANSYS CFX to confirm the microscopic behavior characteristics. Consequently, rapid mixture formation can be expected due to evaporation of hydrogen peroxide in emulsified fuel, and it is confirmed that Reitz&Diwakar breakup model is most suitable as breakup model to be applied to the numerical analysis.

  • Cloud-point data to $160^{\circ}C$ and 1,000 bar are presented with poly(ethylene-co-15.3 mole% octene) copolymers ($PEO_{15}$) in pure 1-octene and mixtures of ethylene - 1-octene. The cloud-point curves for $PEO_{15}$ - ethylene - 1-octene mixture dramatically increase in pressure to as high as 1,000 bar with an increasing ethylene concentration. At ethylene concentrations less than 18 wt%, the ternary mixture has bubble- and cloud-point curves. As the ethylene concentration of the ternary mixture increases, the bubble-point curve and the single-phase region reduce. The reduction in the single phase region with increasing ethylene concentrations is the result of reduced dispersion interactions between $PEO_{15}$ and the mixed solvent. The single-phase region decreases with increasing temperatures when ethylene concentrations are lower than 36 wt%, whereas the single-phase region increases with temperatures at ethylene concentrations greater than 50 wt%. At ethylene concentrations greater than 50 wt% the effect of the polar interactions of the mixed solvent, which is unfavorable to dissolve PEO, is greater than the effect of the density of the mixed solvent. Therefore, the cloud-point pressures increase with a decreasing temperature. However, at ethylene concentrations less than 50 wt%, the cloud-point pressures decrease with temperature, because the effect of the polar interactions is less than the density effect.

  • Thrips are usually not exposed to insecticide spray due to hiding at holes, gaps, or crevices of host plants with their relatively small body sizes. This study devised a strategy to use a contact pheromone to suppress the seclusive behavior of the thrips, A contact pheromone identified as 7-methyltricosane (7TM) in the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, was added to the diet to test the preference of the thrips. Although 7TM did not change the larval behavior, it significantly induced the avoiding behavior in male adults. In contrast, the contact pheromone was preferred by the female adults. Similar behavioral changes were also observed in another flower thrips, Frankliniella intonsa. Based on the behavioral changes induced by the contact pheromone, a mixture of 7TM and insecticide was applied to thrips infesting hot peppers in field conditions. Compared to spinetoram treatment, its mixture treatment with 7TM enhanced the control efficacy against thrips. Interestingly, 7TM treatment alone also gave slight reduction in F. intonsa density, suggesting a behavioral disruption of thrips by the contact pheromone. This study suggests a novel technology to control insect pests using contact pheromone by suppressing the seclusive behavior to avoid exposure to insecticide spray.

  • The annealing behavior of a 5083 Al alloy deformed at cryogenic temperature was investigated, focusing on the evolution of microstructures and mechanical properties. Especially, the effects of annealing temperature, $150~300^{\circ}C$, and time, 3∼60min., on microstructures and mechanical properties of the sheets received 85% reduction at cryogenic temperature were investigated. The optimization of the annealing conditions resulted in a mixture of equiaxed grains and elongated subgrains, exhibiting a good combination of uniform elongation and high strength.

  • TBM concrete segment requires a higher level of material properties compared to general concrete structures due to difficulties in maintenance and uncertainty in ground conditions. In this regard, recently, as one of the methods to achieve enhancement effect on concrete strength, many researchers have been focusing on adding CNTs to concrete mixture. However, even CNTs do not compensate the weakness that concrete exhibits brittle behavior after cracking. Separately, over the past few decades, a number of studies have been conducted on fiber reinforced concrete which exhibits ductile behavior due to fibers bridging cracks. However, only limited studies have been conducted to employ the advantages of the both materials together. In this study, an experimental program has been conducted to investigate the effect of CNTs on the workability and the compressive behavior of PVA-ECC which exhibits ductile tensile behavior with well-distributed cracks even without a conventional rebar. In addition to the compression test, SEM analysis has been also conducted for detailed investigation in the microstructure. The variable was the CNTs mix ratio, which were set to 0.00, 0.25, and 0.50 wt.% to the binding materials. It was observed though the test results that as the CNTs mix ratio increased, the workability considerably decreased with the reduced slump and slump flow. From the compression test results, it was also investigated that the compressive behavior was improved since the compressive strength, the strain corresponding to the compressive strength, and the modulus of elasticity increased with an increase of CNTs mix ratio. The contents of this paper will be useful for relevant research areas such as fiber reinforced concrete with CNTs which might be applied for high performance TMB concrete segments.

  • The sorption behavior of Cs(I), Sr(II), and U(VI) on representative single minerals(oxide and clay) and rocks were comparatively studied by using batch type sorption experiment. The effects of pH, ionic strength and the sorption mechanism were also discussed. It was found that mineral structure played as a main factor governing the sorption characteristics of Cs(I), Sr(II). The sorption of Cs(I) and Sr(II) on minerals showed ionic strength-dependency, which is a indirect sign of weak binding between metal cation and mineral surfaces. However, the sorption behavior of U(VI) was quite different compared with that of Cs(I), and Sr(II). Fe-oxide minerals showed strong tendency for U(VI) sorption, dominating the sorption in the composite/mixture systems. The surface characteristics which arise from mineral structure, and the affinity of metal ions to the sorption sites of minerals are the key to understand the role of minerals in the radionuclide sorption.
