The soil samples used in this study were prepared with the residual granite soils passed through the #4 sieve and obtained from Pocheon in Gyeonggi-Ki do. Specifically, five types of samples were prepared. Sample A which is a natural state soil was classified as SM according to the uses. Samples of B, C, D, and E were prepared by mixing Sample A with bentonite and were classified as SC according to the uses. The plasticity indexes of samples B, C, D, and E were 15, 25, 30, and 40, respectively. The specimens, whose dimensions are 100mm by 127.5mm, were prepared by A method of ASTM D 698 with the Proctor mold. In experiments, the loading with the 1%/min was applied. Four different disk diameters, 13mm, 26mm, 38mm, and 52mm were used in the Improved Unconfined Penetration (IUP) tests. To compare the tensile strengths, the split tensile tests were also conducted on the same specimens used for the IUP tests. To find out the effects of moisture contents, plasticity Index of specimens on the tensile strength, six different water contents were used for making a specimen.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of fiber on engineering properties of Fiber-Reinforced Soil. Engineering properties of soil reinforced with discrete randomly oriented inclusion depend on soil density, particle size, grading, fiber length, tensile strength and stiffness of fiber, mixing ration of fiber, confining stress, etc.. in this paper, the influence of fiber shape, fiber length, fiber diameter, fiber content, cement content and curing duration on engineering characteristics(compaction, shear & permeability) were evaluated for typical soils produced from construction works through uniaxial compression tests and triaxial compression tests. From the experimental results, it was also investigated if there is an optimal range of fiber lengths and fiber contents for the tested soils and tested mono-filament fibers.

Hydraulic conductivity of soil-cement was measured as a function of some selected construction variables that are often encountered in practice. They are initial (or compaction) water content, delayed compaction after mixing, and repeated freezing and thawing. Sandy and clayey soils were used. The hardening agent used was a cement based soil stabilizer consisting of 80% of ordinary Portland cement and 20% of a combination of supplementary materials. Hydraulic conductivity of soil-cement with varying initial water content was, in trend, similar to that of compacted clay. Hydraulic conductivity of soil-cement decreased with increasing initial water content and reached its minimum when compacted wet of optimum water content. Pore size distributions of soil cement at different initial water contents were analyzed using mercury intrusion porosimetry. The analysis showed that dryer condition led to the formation of larger pores with lesser total pore volume; smaller pores with larger total pore volume at wetter condition. Hydraulic conductivity of soil-cement increased by orders in magnitude when specimen underwent delayed compaction of longer than 4 hours after mixing and repeated freezing and thawing.
Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) have been recently investigated as an alternative material for Geosynthetics to improve soil properties. One of the factors influencing the fiber orientation and mechanical properties of CFRP is the effect of soil overburden pressure. This study investigates the tensile behavior of cast-in-place CFRP. During the curing time of specimens, a wide range of normal stress is applied on specimens sandwiched between the soils. Two different soil types are used to determine the effect of soil grain size on the mechanical properties of CFRP. Specimens are also prepared with different specifications such as curing time and mixing soil in to the epoxy. In this study, tensile tests are conducted to investigate the effect of such parameters on tensile behavior of CFRP. The experimental results indicate that by increasing the normal stress and soil grain size, the ultimate tensile strength and the corresponding strain of CFRP decrease; however, reduction in elastic modulus is not noticeable. It should be noted that, increasing the curing period of epoxy resin and mixing soil in to the epoxy have no significant effect on the tensile properties of CFRP.

We performed the geotechnical experiments of the hydraulic conductivity and compressive strength test with the stabilized soil in the laboratory, proved that it is useful to use the stabilized soil as an alternative for natural clay soil. Also, for mixing adding materials in the stabilized soil, it was determined that 1) the optimal mixing ratio of cement : bentonite : stabilizing agent was 90:60:1 of mass ratio(kg) for 1㎥ with soil, 2) it was also possible to use low quality bentonite(B\circled2) classified by swelling grade because of little difference from results of the hydraulic conductivity and compressive strength test with high quality bentonite(B\circled1). According to the results of the fixation ability of heavy metals(Pb$^{2+}$, Cu$^{2+}$, Cd$^{2+}$, Zn$^{2+}$) with soil and additives, authors can conclude that the higher pH condition had the more removal efficiency of heavy metals. B\circled1 and cement had especially high removal efficiency of heavy metals in a whole pH because of high alkalinity.alinity.

The civil engineering properties for the coal fly ash produced from a power plant mixed with sintered powders made from the fly ash-clay slip system were measured and its applicability for the foundation soils was investigated. The F-slip whose dispersion state is 'not good' and C-slip which is re-flocculated by adding a flocculant to a well-dispersed slip were fabricated and then sintered. The sintered body made from C-slip had more uniform microstructure than that of F-slip, therefore, the bulk density and compressive strength were improved. The civil engineering properties such as compression index, compressive strength, permeability coefficient of fly ash were improved by mixing $0.84{\sim}2\;mm$ powders obtained by crushing a sintered body made from C-slip. Therefore, the applicability of mixed powders composing of fly ash and sintered body made from C-slip was confirmed to foundation soils due to its improved civil engineering properties.
The mechanical characteristics of Light-Weighted Foam Soil(LWFS) are investigated in this research. LWFS is composed of the dredged soil from offshore, cement and foam to reduce the unit-weight and increase compressive strength. For this purpose, the unconfined compression tests and triaxial compression tests are carried out on the prepared specimens of LWFS with various conditions such as initial water contents, cement contents, curing conditions and confining stresses. The test results of LWFS indicated that the stress-strain relationship and the compressive strength are strongly influenced by the cement contents rather than the intial water contents of the dredged soils. On the other hand, the stress-strain relationship from triaxial compression test has shown strain-softening behavior regardless of curing conditions. The stress-strain behavior for the various confining stress exhibited remarkable change at the boundary where the confining stress approached to the unconfined compression strength of LWFS. In order to obtain the ground improvement of the compressive strength above 200kPa, the required LWFS mixing ratio is found to be 100%~160% of the initial water contents of dredged soil and 6.6% of cement contents.
This study investigated both water content and penetration resistance of small cone of various clay soils that were made of Kaolinite and Bentonite with different mixing ratios and compared the results with those of the existing dynamic (Casagrande test) and static (fall cone test) tests directly. The comparison showed that the water content at the inflection point on a curve of water content and penetration resistance was very similar to the liquid limit from a fall cone test. The penetration resistance of small cone at the inflection point was 0.2 kPa, and it was ascertained that the water content at the inflection point represents a liquid limit of clay soils. From the study results, it was found that the penetration resistance of 0.2 kPa with the small cone can be an indicator of the liquid limit of clay soils in practice. Finally a test procedure to measure the liquid limit of clay soil based on a penetration resistance of small cone was proposed.

Much oyster shell is breeding by character and conduct of oyster-industry for a long time among them. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the recycling possibility of waste oyster shells, which induce environmental pollutions by piling up out at the open or the temporary reclamation. The purpose of this study is to develope eco-friendly binder using waste oyster shells, and to reinforce soils fur soft soil improvement. In this paper, a series of laboratory tests including compressive pot tests were performed to evaluate characteristics of soils treated by developed waste oyster shells with different water content of soils. Based on test results, eco-friendly Supporter manufactured from waste oyster shells were estimated as good resource materials for soft soil improvements. We got the conclusion by a series of experiment, It is verified that change of pH of soil is improved by mixing with oyster shells. The homogenization method for deducing apparent of oyster shells, which can consider micro-structure of mixed soil, is introduced. The improvement treatment leaded to enlarge fluctuation of soil moisture content. The effect of calcium concentration was good though improvement treatment of physical property. In addition, the crop yield in amelioration plots increased. It means that the increase of crop yield was caused by improvement of soil physical properties rather than improvement of calcium concentration.

The objective of this study is to propose a reliable mixing design procedure of concrete using artificial lightweight aggregate produced from expanded bottom ash and dredged soil. Based on test results obtained from 25 mixes, empirical equations to determine water-to-cement ratio, unit cement content, and replacement level of lightweight fine aggregates were formulated with regard to the targeted performance (compressive strength, dry density, initial slump, and air content) of lightweight aggregate concrete. From the proposed equations and absolute volume mixing concept, unit weight of each ingredient was calculated. The proposed mix design procedure limits the fine aggregate-to-total aggregate ratio by considering the replacement level of lightweight fine aggregates, different to previous approach for expanded fly ash and clay-based lightweight aggregate concrete. Thus, it is expected that the proposed procedure is effectively applied for determining the first trial mixing proportions for the designed requirements of concrete.
