  • A CFD study was conducted to evaluate the nuclear fuel assembly coolant mixing that is promoted by the flow-mixing vanes on the grid spacer. Four mixing vanes (split vane, swirl vane, twisted vane, hybrid vane) were chosen in this study. A single subchannel of one grid span is modeled using the flow symmetry. The three mixing vanes other than swirl vane generate a large crossflow between the subchannels and a skewed elliptic swirling flow in the subchannel near the grid spacer. The swirl vane induces a circular swirling flow in the subchannel and a negligible crossflow. The split vane and the twisted vane were predicted to result in relatively larger pressure drop across the grid spacer. Since the average turbulent kinetic energy in the subchannel rapidly decreases to a fully developed level downstream of the spacer, turbulent mixing caused by the mixing vanes appears to be not as effective as swirling flow mixing in the subchannel. In summary, the CFD analysis represented the overall characteristics of coolant mixing well in a nuclear fuel assembly with the flow mixing vanes on the grid spacer. The CFD study is therefore quite useful for the development of an advanced flow-mixing vane.

  • A non-intrusive Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence(PLIF) technique was applied to study the turbulent mixing process in a Rushton turbine reactor. Instantaneous and ensemble averaged concentration fields are obtained by measuring the fluorescence intensity of Rhodamine B tracer excited by a thin Nd:Yag laser sheet illuminating the whole center plane of the stirred tank. The gray level images captured by a 14-bit cooled CCD camera can be transformed to the local concentration values using a calibration matrix. The dye injection point was selected at the tank wall with three quarter height (3/4H) from the tank bottom to observe the mixing characteristics in upper bulk flow region. There exist distinct two time scales: the rapid decay of mean concentration in each region after the dye infusion reflects the large scale mixing while the followed slow decay reveals the small scale mixing. The temporal change of concentration probability functions conjectures the two sequential processes in the batch type mixing. An inactive column of water existed above the impeller disk, in which the fluid rotates with the shaft but is isolated from the mean bulk flow.

  • The characteristics of turbulent flow and mixing in a small can type combustor are investigated by means of Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Attention is paid for a combustor having a baffle plate with oxidant injection and fuel injection holes and study is made for three cases of different baffle plate configurations. From the result, it is confirmed that mixing is promoted by interaction between the jets during their developing process and large vortical flows generated in the vicinity of the combustor wall or fuel jet front. This particular flow feature is effective to accelerate the slow mixing between fuel and oxidant suffering from low Reynolds number condition in such a small combustor. In particular, the vortical flow region ahead of fuel jet plays an important role for rapid mixing. Discussion is made for the time and space averaged turbulent flow and scalar quantities which show peculiar characteristics corresponding to different vortical flow structures for each baffle plate shapes.

  • The experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of partial premixing, varying the equivalence ratio, mixing degree, swirl intensity, mixing length on the characteristics of flame structure and NOx emission. Experiments were conducted in a dump combustor at 1 bar using methane as fuel. Inlet air temperature was 570K. OH chemiluminescence images were acquired with an ICCD camera. As a result of the experimental investigation of characteristics of flame and NOx emission in partial premixed combustor, we can conclude the results as below. With the increase of swirl number, The flame length decreases and the flame width increases and it helps flame stabilization. It means that lean flammability limit is extended. With the increase of mixing of fuel-air length ratio, Flame goes to be stabilized and NOx emission and $OH^{\ast}$ intensity decrease. Through the comparison of preceding results, It is possible that the exhausted NOx emission from a gas turbine combustor will be able to predict through the $OH^{\ast}$ intensity.

  • With the recent development in construction industry, industrial by-products fly ash(FA) and blast furnace slag(BS) have been used in large quantities as an alternative to cement, as a solution for environmental problems and resource exhaustion. This study analyzed the basic characteristics according to the changes in replacement ratio and mixing ratio of FA and BS in high strength SCMs concrete, from which in turn it sought to find the optimal mixing ratio for high strength concrete The results showed that in unhardened concrete the more the replacement ratio and FA mixing ratio increases the slump flow will increase while amount of air decreases, and setting time is delayed. In hardened concrete the more the replacement ratio and FA mixing ratio increases the more the overall compression strength decreases, but until 28 days of material age the larger of the BS ratio displayed the best compression strength.

  • In present study, the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of the subchannels are investigated as measuring single-phase heat transfer coefficients and the cross sectional velocity field using LDV in the downstream of support grid in $6{\times}6$ rod bundles. Support grid with mixing vanes make enhancing heat transfer in rod bundles by generating turbulent flow. But this turbulent flow only is reserved in a short distance. Support grid with LSVF mixing vanes keep the turbulent flow a long distance. The experiments are performed at the nominal Reynolds number 30,000 and 50,000. The heat transfer coefficients are measured using heated and unheated copper sensor. In this study, the comparison of local heat transfer coefficients for LSVF mixing vane and split mixing vane is represented.

  • The combustion performances and characteristics of the subscale liquid rocket combustion chamber are discussed in this paper. Subscale combustion chamber is composed of mixing head, ablative cooling cylinder, and water cooling nozzle. The mixing head has eighteen coaxial swirl injectors and one center coaxial swirl injector for ignition. The mixing heads employing the injectors of low different recess length are considered in this paper. The results of the firing test, comparison of performance, and characteristics of static and dynamic pressures of the four different mixing heads are described. The characteristics of combustion at design and of design points are also discussed.

  • The main objective of this study was investigation of combustion instability characteristics in a lean partially premixed gas turbine dump combustor. Dynamic pressure transducers were located on combustor and inlet section to observe combustion pressure oscillation and difference at each measurement places. Also flame shape and $CH^*$ chemiluminescence were measured using a high speed ICCD camera. The combustor length was varied in order to have different acoustic characteristics from 800 to 1090 mm. The first section of this paper shows the stability map in model gas turbine combustor. And the effects of combustor length, mixture velocity in the mixing section and equivalence ratio were studied by the pressure perturbation and heat release oscillation. Also, the instability frequency and mode analysis were studied in last two sections. We observed two dominant instability frequencies in this study. Lower frequencies were obtained at lower equivalence ratio region and it was associated with a fundamental longitudinal mode of combustor length. Higher frequencies were observed in higher equivalence ratio conditions. It was related to secondary longitudinal mode of combustor and mixing section. In this instability characteristics, pressure oscillation of mixing section part was larger than pressure oscillation of combustor. As a result, combustion instability was strongly affected by acoustic characteristics of combustor and mixing section geometry.

  • Tungsten Inert Gas(TIG) welding is today one of the most popular arc welding process because of its high quality welds and low equipment costs. Even if welding productivity increases with welding speed and current, this strategy is limited by the appearance of defects such as undercut and humping bead due to the depressed molten metal. The purpose of this study investigates the effect of He mixing ratio on the characteristics with high current and speed in TIG welding. The conclusions obtained permit to explain the arc start characteristics quantitatively and the maximum welding speed on stable bead formation with He mixing ratio for high current and speed TIG welding observed in experiments. Also through the relation of the maximum arc pressure and surface depression depth at high current and speed TIG welding, it made clear the mechanism of unstable bead formation.
