  • This paper depicts the computational results for the axisymmetric subsonic/sonic ejector systems with a second throat. The numerical simulations are based on a fully implicit finite volume scheme of the compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in a domain that extends from the stagnation chamber to the ejector diffuser exit. In order to obtain practical design factors for the subsonic/sonic ejector systems which are applicable to industrial vacuum pumps, the ejector throat area, the mixing section configuration, and the ejector throat length are changed in computations. For the subsonic/sonic ejector systems operating in the range of low operation pressure ratios, the effects of the design factors on the vacuum performance of the secondary chamber are discussed.

  • The concept of lean-premixed combustion in gas turbine combustor operation has become a standard in recent years as an effective means to meet stringent environmental standards on NOx emissions. Various types of air-fuel premixer, which affect greatly NOx emission and stability of lean-premixed low NOx combustor, were investigated experimentally to reduce the NOx emission. One type of the premixers is selected by experiments and applied it to 70kW class lean-premixed gas turbine combustor. The exit temperature and emissions of CO and NOx were measured with equivalence ratios at ambient pressure. From the results, the emissions of CO and NOx were influenced by the type of air-fuel premixer. As the mixing length of air and fuel is longer, the NOx and CO emission were decreased in the primary reaction zone. Compared with of conventional combustor, the lean-premixed low NOx combustor has low NOx emission characteristics.

  • A micromixer plays an important role in Bio-MEMS or μ-TAS. Mixing is generally generated by turbulence and interdiffusion of two fluids. Because of low Reynolds number values (Re << 2000) within microchannels, it is difficult to generate turbulence, and consequently mixing mainly depends on interdiffusion. So, channel distance is often prohibitively long to mix two different fluids properly. To reduce this mixing length, we proposed a new mixer for micromixing in which two fluids were effectively mixed by an ultrasonic wave generated by PMN-PT. The ultrasonic wave was radiated into a chamber In the cross-sectional direction into the boundary surface formed by two fluids. The two fluids were positioned one on top of the other. The mixing state was measured by observing the color of samples due to the reaction of NaOH and phenolphthalein.

  • Experimental study on combustion characteristics of double swirl coaxial injectors has been conducted for the assessment of critical injector design parameters. A reusable, unielement thrust chamber has been fabricated with a water-cooled copper nozzle. Two principal design parameters. a swirl angle and a recess length, have been investigated through hot firing tests for the understanding of their effects on high pressure combustion. Clearly, both parameters considerably affect the combustion efficiency, dynamics and hydraulic characteristics of an injector. Internal mixing of propellants in a recess region increases combustion efficiency along with the increase of a pressure drop required for flowing the same amount of mass flow rates. It is concluded that pressure buildup due to flame can be released by the increase of LOx flow axial momentum or the reduction of a recess length. Dynamic pressure measurements of the thrust chamber show varied dynamic behaviors depending on injector configurations.

  • This study presents relations between the time lag and interaction index of the impinging-jet injectors using time lag model in a model chamber. To analyze the response of the flame, 5% amplitude of oxidizer velocity is artificially perturbed at a resonance frequency. At the mixing point of fuel and oxidizer, which determines the characteristic length, the relationship between velocity perturbation and heat release rate is quantified by combustion parameters of interaction index and time lag. As the improved method to apply the time-lag, the method using the average velocity obtained from numerical results is suggested.

The tendency that the time delay decreases with axial jet velocity has been observed.

  • The optimal design and combustion analysis of the gas generator for Liquid Rocket Engine (LRE) were performed. A fuel-rich gas generator in open cycle turbopump system was designed for 101on1 in thrust with RP-1/LOx combination. The optimal design was done for maximizing specific impulse of main combustion chamber with constraints of combustion temperature and power matching in turbopump system. Results of optimal design show the dimension of length, diameter, and contraction ratio of gas generator. The configuration of the gas generator and the condition for performance which can maximize the objective function were determined and found to meet the design constraints. Also, the combustion analysis was conducted to evaluate the performance of designed chamber and injector of gas generator. And the effect of the turbulence ring was investigated on the mixing enhancement in the chamber.

  • Oxides of nitrogen play important roles in atmospheric chemistry. Soil has been recognized as a major natural source of NO, and its emission depends on soil parameters such as soil nitrogen availability, soil moisture and temperature. It is necessary to understand effects of these controlling parameters on soil NO emission. In order to understand soil moisture effects on NO emission, variations of NO concentration and existence of its equilibrium concentration were observed from ammonium fertilized Japanese upland soil prepared for different soil moisture conditions. The closed chamber technique was employed for this study. The significant increases in NO with soil moisture were found. Maximum was occurred at sample ID4 (55% of water-filled pore space (WFPS)), but it decreased as soil moisture increased. No significant NO concentration was emitted from soil sample without fertilizer, but there was significant NO in fertilized soil samples. The magnitudes of NO from soil increased with time and reached at steady state within ten minutes approximately. These results suggest that nitrogen input from fertilizer takes charge in the first step of sharp increase in NO emission, and then soil moisture becomes important factor to control NO emission from the soils. NO concentrations from soil were compared to those one-day after the experiment. Results from the comparison analysis suggest that the soil NO flux might have been stimulated by soil disturbances like mixing, and this is much more effective in dry soils rather than in wet soils. It was found that much less NO came out from soils after a day; suggesting that most of NO was released from the soils within a day after fertilizer application during our experiment. The length of NO releasing time span may depend on the amounts of fertilizer applied, soil moisture condition, and other soil physical parameters.
