This work presents an investigation of aerodynamic characteristics of fuel spray injected from a high pressure hollow cone swirl injector into a constant volume chamber. Laser tomography visualization was used to interrogate the fuel and air mixing characteristics and the effect of chamber pressure and temperature increase was analyzed, Preliminary results on spray development showed that mixing effect tends to increase with the increase of injection pressure and chamber gas pressure yielding a decrease of spray penetration and an attenuation of well-defined vortex structure. Topological analysis of the spray structure has been performed to initiate the understanding of mixing and vaporization process. For the present experimental conditions fuel injection pressure and chamber gas pressure appear as the dominant factors which govern the transient mixing characteristics. Moreover spray atmixation characteristics are improved by increasing chamber gas temperature.

In this study, shape optimization of micro-static mixer with a cantilever beam was accomplished for mixing the mixing efficiency by using successive response surface approximations. Variables were chosen as the length of cantilever beam and the angle between horizontal and the cantilever beam. Sequential approximate optimization method was used to deal with both highly nonlinear and non-smooth characteristics of flow field in a micro-static mixer. Shape optimization problem of a micro-static mixer can be divided into a series of simple subproblems. Approximation to solve the subproblems was performed by response surface approximation, which does not require the sensitivity analysis. To verify the reliability of approximated objective function and the accuracy of it, ANOVA analysis and variables selection method were implemented, respectively. It was verified that successive response surface approximation worked very well and the mixing efficiency was improved very much comparing with the initial shape of a micro-static mixer.
SCRamjet is the key technology for hypersonic flight over mach number 6. It is characterized by very short residence time in combustor because its internal flow is supersonic. In this short time, the whole process of combustion must be done. Especially numerical study of combustor is important because air-fuel mixing rate influences the performance of combustor. Various methods of air-fuel mixing enhancement are proposed. Among these, cavity injection method is selected to study in this paper. The numerical study is conducted with the variation of the cavity length at the fixed height of unit and jet injection on the downstream of cavity.

A study for permeability and erosion characteristics of short fiber reinforced soils was performed. As mixing ratio increases from 0 to 1.0% permeability of short fiber reinforced soils increased but, maximum increment ratio($k_{1.0%}/k_{0%}$) was 8.47. As a result of permeability test with 19, 38 and 60mm fiber reinforced soils, there were no difference in fiber length. Void ratio increased with increment of mixing ratio and decrease of compaction energy and as a result of plotting permeability and void ratio, log k increased linearly by void ratio. As a result of erosion test, soil erosion was decreased sharply by increase of fiber mixing ratio up to 1.0%. Despite increase of soil erosion by slope angle, the increment ratio was decreased by mixing ratio.
This study focuses on the near-field vortical structure and dynamics of coaxial jets. The characteristics of laminar flow and mixing in coaxial jets are investigated using a unsteady flow simulation. In order to analyze the geometic effects on the vortical structure, several cases of different configurations are selected for various values of the velocity ratio of inner jet to outer jet. From the result, it is confirmed that mixing is promoted by the development of vortical structure and the interaction between inner jet and outer jet. This feature is strongly related to the vortex frequency in the shear-layers. The vortex frequency depends on the velocity ratio and the lip thickness of inner nozzle, but the outer pipe length has no effect on the frequency variation.

Micromixer plays an important role in Bio-MEMS or ${\mu}-TAS$. Mixing is generally generated by turbulence and interdiffusion of two fluids. Because of low Reynolds number(Re << 2000) in ${\mu}-channel$, it is difficult to generate turbulence, so mixing mainly depends on interdiffusion. Thus long channel distance is required to mix two different fluids. To reduce the channel length required for mixing, we propose the a new active ${\mu}-mixer$ that two fluids are effectively mixed in ${\mu}-channel$ by the ultrasonic wave which is generated by PZT. The ultrasonic wave is radiated into a chamber in the cross-section directional direction to interface with the two fluids. The two fluids are positioned one on top of the other. Mixing state is measured by the changing of color due to the reaction of NaOH and phenolphtalein.

Recently, excavations in highly congest urban area have been increased. For the excavations conducted in extremely narrow spaces, we have been developing a novel soil reinforcement system of temporary retaining walls by using deep cement mixing method. The developing method installs largerdiameter ($\Phi$=300~500mm) and shorter reinforcement blocks than previous reinforcement system for mobilizing friction with soils, therefore it has advantages of not only shortening the length of reinforcement system but also reducing the amount of reinforcement. In this study, we performed a numerical analysis of the new reinforcement system by using a commercial finite element program, and evaluated the behavior of the reinforced retaining wall system under various conditions of the length, the diameter, the spacing, and the angle of the reinforcement system.

This paper introduces empirical correlations to obtain the gas/liquid flow rates and the spray drop size of low viscosity liquid injected by Y-jet twin-fluid atomizers. The gas flow rate is well correlated with the gas injection pressure and the mixing point pressure, based on the compressible flow theory. Similarly, the liquid flow rate is determined by the liquid injection pressure and the mixing point pressure, and a simple correlation for the liquid discharge coefficient at the liquid port was deduced from the experimental results. The mixing point pressure, which is one of the essential parameters, was expressed in terms of the gas/liquid flow rate ratio and the mixing port length. Disintegration and atomization mechanisms both within the mixing port and outside the atomizer were carefully re-examined, and a "basic" correlation form representing the mean diameter of drops was proposed. The "basic" correlation was expressed in terms of the mean gas density within the mixing port, gas/liquid mass flow rate ratio and the Weber number. Though the correlation is somewhat complicated, it represents the experimental data within an accuracy of ${\pm}15%$.EX>${\pm}15%$.

The flow in a microchannel is usually characterized as a low Reynolds number (Re) so that good mixing is quite difficult to be achieved. In this regard, we developed a novel chaotic micromixer, named Serpentine Laminating Micromixer (SLM) in the present study, Part 1. In the SLM, the higher level of chaotic mixing can be achieved by combining two general chaotic mixing mechanisms: splitting/recombination and chaotic advection. The splitting and recombination (in other term, lamination) mechanism is obtained by the successive arrangement of 'F'-shape mixing units in two layers. The chaotic advection is induced by the overall three-dimensional serpentine path of the microchannel. Chaotic mixing performance of the SLM was fully characterized numerically. To compare the mixing performance, a T-type micromixer which has the same width, height and length of the SLM was also designed. The three-dimensional numerical mixing simulations show the superiority of the SLM over the T-type micromixer. From the cross-sectional simulation results of mixing patterns, the chaotic advection effect from the serpentine channel path design acts favorably to realize the ideal lamination of fluid flow as Re increases. Chaotic mixing mechanism, proposed in this study, could be easily integrated in Micro-Total-Analysis-System, Lab-on-a-Chip and so on.
