  • A model-to-model comparison is attempted between Princeton Ocean Model (POM) and Miami Isopycnic Coordinate Ocean Model (MICOM) as a first step to extend our knowledge of models' performances in studying the East Sea circulation. The two models have fundamentally different numerical schemes and boundary conditions imposed on these models are not exactly the same each other. This study indicates that MICOM has a critical weak point in that it does not reproduce the shallow surface currents properly while it handles the thermohaline processes and associated movements of intermediate and deep waters efficiently. It is suggested that the mixed layer scheme needs to be modified so that it can match with inflow boundary conditions in order to reproduce the surface currents properly in MICOM. POM reproduces the surface current pattern better than MICOM, although the surface currents in POM appear to undergo the unrealistic seasonal variation and have exaggeratedly large vertical scale. These defects seem to arise during the process of adapting POM to the East Sea, and removing these defects is left as a future task.

  • A numerical study based on the three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes solver is carried out to analyze the flowfield through a single stage transonic compressor. Explicit four-step Runge-Kutta scheme with spatially variable time step and implicit residual smoothing is used. The governing equations are discretized with exploit finite difference method. Mixed-out average method is used at the interface between rotor and stator. And, an artificial dissipation model is used to assure the stability of solution. The results with k-$\omega$ turbulence model were compared to the results with Baldwin-Lomax model, and physical phenomena of transonic compressor are presented. The two turbulence models give the results that show reasonably good agreements with experimental data.

  • To determine the flow stress of semi-solid materials, a new combined method has been studied by experimental and analytic technique in the current approach. Using backward extrusion experiment and its numerical analysis, the characterization scheme of semi-solid materials according to the change of initial solid volume fraction has been proposed. Because that solid volume fraction is sensitive to temperature change, it is required to precisely control the temperature setting. Model materials can guarantee the establishment of material characterization technique from the noise due to temperature change. Thus, clay mixed with bonded abrasives was used for experiment and the change of initial solid fraction was copied out through the variation of mixing ratio. Upper bound method was adapted to increase in efficiency of the calculation in numerical analysis and new kinematically admissible velocity field was employed to improve the accuracy of numerical solution. It is thought that the material characterization scheme proposed in this study can be applied to not only semi-solid materials, but also other materials that is difficult to obtain the simple stress state.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an efficient and accurate quadratic finite element model based on Streamline Upwind/Petrov Galerkin (SU/PG) scheme for analyzing and predicting two dimensional flow features in complex natural rivers. For a development of model, quadratic tin, quadrilateral and mixed elements as well as linear tin, quadrilateral and mixed elements were used in the model. Also, this model was developed through reinforcement of Gauss Quadrature which was necessary to integral of governing equation. Several tests for bottom-rising channel and U-type channel were performed for the purpose of validation and verification of the developed model. Such results showed that solutions of second order elements are better accurate and improved than those of linear elements. Results obtained by the developed model and RMA-2 model are compared, and the results for the developed model were better accurate than those of RMA-2 model. In the future if the developed model is applied in natural rivers, it can provide better accurate results than those of existing model.

  • In this study, we analyze consumer preferences based on the agricultural box scheme attributes, and make a suggestion for business revival. We estimate the marginal willingness to pay (MWTP) for box scheme attributes using a choice experiment. Attributes include the bundle method, the delivery method, and price. To select an efficient model for statistical analysis, we evaluate the conditional logit model, heteroscedastic extreme value model(HEV model), multinomial probit model, and mixed logit model under different assumptions. The results of these four models show that the bundle method, the delivery method, and price are statistically significant in explaining the probability of participation in a box scheme. The results of likelihood ratio tests show that the heteroscedastic extreme value model is the most appropriate for our survey data. The results also indicate that MWTP for a change from fixed type to selection type is KRW 7,096.6. MWTP for a change from parcel service to direct delivery and cold-chain delivery are KRW 3,497.5 and KRW 7,532.7, respectively. The results of this study may contribute to the government's local food policies.

  • We present a new approach to the analysis of mobile cellular communication systems under the environment of mixed platforms adopting a guard channel scheme. We assume general cell residence time distributions according to platform-types. Our system model is based on a heterogeneous M/G/c loss system with customer-dependent guard channels, where heterogeneous customers with different service time distributions have different numbers of their own guard channels. We develop the general formula of steady state probabilities for the heterogeneous M/G/c loss system with customer-dependent guard channels. The mean channel occupancy times of new and handoff calls are rigorously derived under a general setting. Finally, our numerical results show that the blocking probability and the forced termination probability are sensitive to the cell residence time distributions.

  • This paper presents an autopilot design method for STT missiles using the intelligent control technique and multiple controllers. The mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ control technique is applied for each controller design and the control gains are implemented by using the genetic searching algorithm. To facilitate automatic switching of multiple controllers under different operating conditions, an error based switching scheme is also combined with the multiple controllers at a higher level, which constitutes a hierarchical intelligent control system. It is shown via computer simulation that the proposed autopilot outperforms the conventional one.

  • At present, there are few studies on signal control of pedestrian traffic flow and non-motor traffic flow at intersections. Research on the optimization scheme of mixed traffic flow signal control can coordinate and control the overall traffic flow of pedestrians, non-motor vehicles and motor vehicles, which is of great significance to improve the congestion at intersections. For the traffic optimization of intersections, this paper starts from two aspects: channelization optimization and phase design, and reduces the number of conflict points at intersections from spatial and temporal right-of-way allocation respectively. Taking the classical signal timing method as the theoretical basis, and aiming at ensuring the safety and time benefit of traffic travelers, a channelization optimization and signal control scheme of the intersection is proposed. The channelization and phase design methods of intersections with motor vehicles, non-motor vehicles and pedestrians as objects are discussed, and measures to improve the channelization optimization of intersections are proposed. A multi-objective optimization model of intersection signal control was established, and the model was solved based on NSGA-II algorithm.

  • To ascertain the characteristics of pool sloshing behavior that might be encountered during a core disruptive accident of sodium-cooled fast reactors, in our earlier work several series of experiments were conducted under various scenarios including the condition with mono-sized solid particles. It is found that under the particle-bed condition, three typical flow regimes (namely the bubble-impulsion dominant regime, the transitional regime and the bed-inertia dominant regime) could be identified and a flow-regime model (base model) has been even successfully established to estimate the regime transition. In this study, aimed to further understand this behavior at more realistic particle-bed conditions, a series of simulated experiments is newly carried out using mixed-size particles. Through analyses, it is verified that for present scenario, by applying the area mean diameter, our previously-developed base model can provide the most appropriate predictive results among the various effective diameters. To predict the regime transition with a form of extension scheme, a correction factor which is based on the volume-mean diameter and the degree of convergence in particle-size distribution is suggested and validated. The conducted analyses in this work also indicate that under certain conditions, the potential separation between different particle components might exist during the sloshing process.

  • The unsteady 2D convection and diffusion equation is solved numerically for the real-time simulation of suspended load propagation. The streamlined upwind scheme efficiently reduces numerical oscillations due to the high Peclet number in the convection dominant flow. By using the mixed boundary condition to express the external source terms or externally induced suspended load as a function of time in the algorithm, the model is capable of handling not only continuous load cases but also non-continuous suspended load influx. The suspended load transport modelwas verified using a case study for which an analytical exact solution is available and was applied to the real-time simulation of a suspended load influx case on the Mississippi River. The model algorithm can provide a framework upon which water quality as well as contaminant transport models can be built.
