A certain width of attached gingiva is required to maintain gingival health The purpose of this study was to examine the dimensional changes in the width of attached gingiva and the depth of gingival sulcus among the deciduous, mixed and permanent dentitions and establish baseline information on the width of attached gingiva in Korean children. Eighty-eight children aged 4 to 14, who visited the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Samsung Medical Center, were selected and divided into 3 groups according to the periods of dentition: deciduous, mixed and permanent dentitions. The width of keratinized gingiva and the depth of gingival sulcus were measured in each group with a periodontal probe and the width of attached gingiva was determined. The width of attached gingiva in maxillary and mandibular first molars increased significantly with age after eruption in the permanent dentition (p<0.05). The sulcus depth significantly increased in newly erupted permanent teeth with narrower width of attached gingiva (p<0.05) in all of the experimented teeth with the exception of the mandibular central incisor during the transition period. The results suggest that the mean width of attached gingiva does not increase steadily from the deciduous to the permanent dentition.

Mutans streptococci have been reported to be implicated in dental caries. Of these streptococcal species, Streptcoccus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus are most commonly found in human dental caries. Prevalence of these bacterial species in dental caries is found to be varied in different races and countries. Therefore, importance of these bacteria in dental caries remains to be determined The present study was performed to find out correlation S. mutans and S. sobrinus with dental caries in 125 Korean children with mixed dentition between 6 to 11 years of age. They were classified as group A(6-8 years) and group B(9-11 years) by age. For the study, stimulated saliva samples were collected from each subject. The vials containing saliva specimens were serially diluted (1:10) in saline and plated in duplicate on tryptone-yeast extract-cysteine with sucrose and bacitracin (TYCSB) for S. mutans and S. sobrinus. After genomic DNA was extracted from the samples, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification was performed for identification using universal primers and specific primers to S. mutans and S. sobrinus. Data of microbial variables were compared to caries status of the subjects. According to this study, the result were as follows : 1. S. mutans versus S. sobrinus were moderate positive linear correlated in both group A(r=0.70) and group B(r=0.50). 2. Between S. mutans and dental caries there were weak positive linear correlation in both group A(r= 0.25) and group B(r=0.34). 3. S. sobrinus versus dental caries were not correlated in group A but slightly correlated in group B(r=0.21). 4. Between S. mutans and age, there were not correlation in both group. 5. S. sobrinus versus age were weak correlated in group A(r=0.32) but not correlated in group B.

Estimating the size of unerupted teeth is an essential aspect of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning in the mixed dentition. Several methods were introduced and used for the prediction. The most common methods among these would be Moyers probability chart and Tanaka and Johnston equations. These are currently used widely, but they were developed for Caucasians. Because there are clear racial differences in teeth size, the objectives of this study were to produce correlation coefficients between the combined mesiodistal widths of the permanent mandibular incisors and those of the canines and premolars for each quadrant, and prediction tables with regression equations, specifically for Korean. 178 young adults (70 women, 108 men, mean age 21.63 years) were selected from the College of Dentistry, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea. The mesiodistal crown diameters of the permanent teeth were measured with calipers. Significant sexual dimorphism was found in tooth sizes. The correlation coefficients between the total mesiodistal width of the mandibular permanent incisors and those of the maxillary and mandibular canines and premolars were found to be between 0.52 and 0.64. The standard error of the estimatation was better (0.60) for women and the ${\gamma}^2$ values ranged from 0.27 to 0.41 for both sexes Prediction tables were prepared for Korean. This study showed larger canine and premolar diameters than Tanaka and Johnston's and Moyers' studies which might be due to the racial differences. Further investigations with a larger sample size will be needed for more representative data on the Korean population.
Many references report that abnormal diastema except temporary diastema existing in mixed dentition period is caused by maxilary heavy labial frenum, malocclusion, progressive periodontal disease, and loss of posterior teeth. We can diagnose patient as diastema caused by periodontal disease, especially, in case of accompanying progressively destructed anterior maxillary alveolar bone defect, and interseptal bone defect. We report Multiple disciplinary approach for diastema associated with periodontal disease. Periodontal treatment(Guided Tissue -Regeneration, alveoloplasty, bone graft), or thodontic treatment (space closure, redistribution), and the final proshodontic restoration for retention were used.

In the mixed dentition, many children have mild crowding of anterior dentition on the mandibular arch and mesial tilting of mandibular molar. Lip bumper have been used to gain arch length for the alignment of mild to moderate crowded dental arches. As such, they may provide an alternative to extraction therapy. The claimed therapeutic effect of the lip bumper is bodily forward incisor movement, flaring of the lower incisors, and distal tipping of the molar. The dental changes can be attributed to removal of lip pressure on the lower anterior dentition and the distal forces exerted at the molar abutment. The purpose of this study is to show more easily method of treatment for mild anterior crowding of mandible.
Dentigerous cyst (DC) is an odontogenic cyst associated with the crown of an impacted, embedded, unerupted, or developing tooth. It is the second most common type of odontogenic cysts, accounting for 14% to 24% of all jaw cysts. Although these cysts occur more frequently during the second and third decades of life, they can also be found in children and adolescents in the mixed dentition stage. Treatment of the odontogenic cyst involves enucleation or marsupialization/decompression methods. The latter approach is preferred for larger cysts, and it is especially helpful in adolescent patients in conserving the unerupted permanent successors. The aim of treatment for DC is the complete elimination of pathology and maintenance of dentition with minimal surgical intervention. Recently defined criteria for the selection of treatment modality include the cyst size and location of the cyst, patient age, dentition involved, stage of root development, position of the tooth involved in the jaw, and relationship with the surrounding vital structure. Marsupialization or decompression technique has been advocated by several authors for treating DCs among young patients. In this conservative technique, the creation of an accessory cavity helps relieve intra-cystic pressure and accelerate the healing of cystic lesion. This technique has been successfully performed and is indicated for growing children and adolescents. Here, we report a large cyst lesion in the mandible treated by marsupialization for conservative management. In conclusion, successful reduction in size was achieved, and intraoperative complication could be prevented.

Gingival fibromatosis is a non-inflammatory oral disease, characterized by slowly progress enlargement of the free and attached gingiva. Gingival fibromatosis may have familial tendency. Gingival enlargement usually begins with the eruption of the permanent dentition but can also develop with the eruption of the primary dentition. In this case, a 6-year-old female had gingival enlargement at birth. There was no familial, medical and pharmacologic history of gingival overgrowth. Treatment is gingivectomy with a rigorous program of oral hygiene. Recurrence of gingival fibromatosis may well be inevitable. Therefore there is no general aggrement as to the timing of surgical intervention. Generally the best time is when all the permanent teeth have erupted. However early intervention can improve oral function and esthetic and psychologic effect.
Purpose: The objective of this scoping review was to investigate the applicability and performance of various convolutional neural network (CNN) models in tooth numbering on panoramic radiographs, achieved through classification, detection, and segmentation tasks. Materials and Methods: An online search was performed of the PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus databases. Based on the selection process, 12 studies were included in this review. Results: Eleven studies utilized a CNN model for detection tasks, 5 for classification tasks, and 3 for segmentation tasks in the context of tooth numbering on panoramic radiographs. Most of these studies revealed high performance of various CNN models in automating tooth numbering. However, several studies also highlighted limitations of CNNs, such as the presence of false positives and false negatives in identifying decayed teeth, teeth with crown prosthetics, teeth adjacent to edentulous areas, dental implants, root remnants, wisdom teeth, and root canal-treated teeth. These limitations can be overcome by ensuring both the quality and quantity of datasets, as well as optimizing the CNN architecture. Conclusion: CNNs have demonstrated high performance in automated tooth numbering on panoramic radiographs. Future development of CNN-based models for this purpose should also consider different stages of dentition, such as the primary and mixed dentition stages, as well as the presence of various tooth conditions. Ultimately, an optimized CNN architecture can serve as the foundation for an automated tooth numbering system and for further artificial intelligence research on panoramic radiographs for a variety of purposes.

Cerebral Palsy is a genetic term referring to abnormalities of motor control caused by damage to a child's brain early in the course of development. Due to the impairment of balanced perioral muscle development, the prevalence of malocclusions in patients with cerebral palsy such as maxillary protrusion is high. But most clinicians may feel uncomfortable to treatment of these problems. Here a case report about mitigation of maxillary anterior teeth protruded in patient with cerebral palsy. 8y 4m old boy who have cerebral palsy visited our dental hospital. He showed severely protrusive maxillary anterior teeth with mouth breathing and could not close his mouth. He and his mother wanted to improve dental and facial esthetic problem. Specially designed or modified intraoral fixed appliance and rubber elastic chain was used in the therapy. Treatment carried out for 8 months and we could observe maxillary incisor angle was improved and mouth breathing habit was stopped. In conclusion, modified fixed appliance therapy for the patients with cerebral palsy might be useful. Continuous rehabilitation training of lips should be followed after treatment to correct imbalance of muscle tone.

A study was made to investigate a relationship existing in the dentoskeletal framework and the soft tissue profile around the face, and compare the sexual differences between boys and girls having the normal occlusion in the mixed dentition. The lateral cephalograms were composed of 67 boys aged 10.3 years and 68 girls aged 10.4 years, respectively. By means of the lateral cephalograms, both the hard-and soft tissue structures were simultaneously analyzed, measured and evaluated by introducing the several reference items: S-N plane, palatal plane, mandibular plane, N-A line and A-P line for the dentoskeletal structures and N’-P’line for the soft tissue, and the 21 measuring points for the both structures. The significant findings were as follows: 1. In general the boys showed the larger nasal component dimension than did the girls, but the length and height of nose(N’-Prn and NA-Prn) showed the significant sexual difference among those when evaluated statistically. 2. The lip-thickness was found to be minimal in the region of nasion, greater in the region of pogonion, and much greater in the region of point A in the both sexes, but the only thickness over point A(A-A’) showed the significant sexual difference statistically. 3. The upper and lower lip position were found to be located anteriorly to the esthetic line in the both sexes, but upper lip position showed the significant sexual difference when evaluated statistically. 4. The regions of nose and upper lip had a tendency not to be following the underlying skeletal profile.
