  • The effects of various organic wastes on anaerobic fermentative hydrogen production were studied using enriched mixed microflora in batch tests. Rotten fruit, corn powder and organic wastewater enriched with sulfate (up to 1,000 mg/L) were used for experiments. Maximum hydrogen production (547.1 mL) was observed from rotten apple with initial substrate concentration of 132.2 g COD/L. The experimental result on sulfate enriched organic wastewater indicated that hydrogen production is not adversely influenced by relatively high sulfate concentration. Residual sulfate content remained at 96-98 % after 75 hours of reaction, which showed that no major sulfate reduction was occurred at pH 5.3-5.5 in the reactor. The volatile fatty acid (VFA) fractions produced during the reaction was in the order of butyrate > acetate > propionate in all experiments. The results of this study would be useful for controlling the conditions on fermentative hydrogen production using different feedstocks.

  • Digestion of a municipal wastewater sludge by the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor(ASBR) was investigated to evaluate the performance of the ASBR process at a critical condition of high-solids-content feed. The reactors were operated at an HRT of 10 days with an equivalent loading rate of 0.8-1.5 gVS/L/d at $35^{\circ}C.$ The main conclusions drawn from this study were as follows: 1. Digestion of a municipal wastewater sludge was possible using the ASBR in spite of high concentration of settleable solids in the sludge. The ASBRS with 3- and 4-day cycle period showed almost identical high digestion performances. 2. No adverse effect on digestion stability was observed in the ASBRS in spite of withdrawal and replenishment of $30\%\;or\;40\%$ of liquid contents. A conventional anaerobic digester could be easily converted to the ASBR without any stability problem. 3. Flotation thickening occurred in thicken step of the ASBRS throughout steady state, and floating bed volume at the end of thicken period occupied about $70\%$ of the working volume of the reactor. Efficiency of flotation thickening in the ASBRS could be comparable to that of additional gravity thickening of a completely mixed digester. 4. Solids were accumulated rapidly in the ASBR during start-up period. Solids concentrations in the ASBRS were 2.6 times higher than that in the completely mixed control reactor at steady state. Dehydrogenase activity had a strong correlation with the solids concentration. Dehydrogenase activity of the digested sludge in the ASBR was 2.9 times higher than that of the sludge in the control reactor, and about 25 times higher than that of the subnatant in the ASBR. 5. Remarkable increase in equivalent gas production of $52\%$ was observed at the ASBRS compared with the control reactor in spite of similar Quality of clarified effluent from the ASBRS and control reactor. The increase in gas production from the ASBRS was believed to be combined results of accumulation of microorganisms, higher driving force applied, and additional long-term degradation of organics continuously accumulated.

  • EMMC(Entrapped Mixed Microbial Cell) process which is a kind of active cell immobilizing method was applied to treat fisheries processing wastewater biologically. Kinetic constants were calculated for organic and nitrogen removal and effect of effluent recycling on system performance was evaluated also. Yield coefficient, Y showed relatively low value compared with Y value obtained from conventional activated sludge process. It means that EMMC process can reduce amount of excess sludge significantly compared with conventional activated sludge process. Endogenous respiration coefficient $k_e$ of EMMC process also showed relatively low value compared with that of conventional activated sludge process. Yield coefficient Y, endogenous respiration coefficient $k_e$ and half saturation constant $k_s$ obtained from EMMC process in terms of nitrification were compared with reported value from literature based on suspended growth nitrification system. The value of Y obtained from this study has no difference compared with values obtained from literature review and $k_e$ of this study was low but $k_s$ of this study was high compared than values obtained from suspended growth nitrification system. To evaluate the effect of internal recycling on system performance, system was operated with internal recycling ratio of 1.5Q, 2.0Q, 2.5Q and 3.0Q. increase of internal recycling ratio effect more greatly on improvement of denitrification efficiency than that of nitrification efficiency. Accordingly, optimization of internal recycling ratio has to be based on improvement of anoxic reactor performance.

  • The research was performed to compare to the biofilm characteristics and phenol removal efficiency in RBCs(Rotating Biological Contactor) using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT(single population) and activated sludge(mixed population) as inoculum. Both reactors showed similar tendency on variations of dry weight, thickness and dry density of biofilm. However, the growth of biofilm thickness in 3 and 4 stage of single population reactor has sustained longer than that of the mixed population reactor. Unlike the mixed population reactor, the dry density of biofilm in the single population reactor had a difference between 1, 2 stage and 3, 4 stage. The single population reactor was stably operated without the decrease of phenol removal efficiency in the range of pH 6 ~ 9 and 15mM phenol was completely degraded in these pH ranges. But in case of the mixed population reactor, the phenol degradability was dramatically decreased at over 5mM phenol concentration because of the overgrowth and detachment of its biofilm.

  • Different colloidal particles generally co-exist in the water and wastewater. Thus, there needs to identify practical electrokinetic characteristics of the particles, comparing with the case when each colloidal material is independently distributed. In this study, changes of overall zeta potential was examined through mixed dispersions of $TiO_{2}$ and $MnO_{2}$. The mixing ratios were classified into 3-type in order to distinguish the effects of the proportions of each particle from those of total concentration in colloidal suspensions. The types are single colloidal dispersions of $TiO_{2}$ and $MnO_{2}$ (1:0, 0:1), mixed dispersions at different ratios (0.75:0.25, 0.5:0.5, 0.25:0.75), and a mixed dispersion with doubled concentration (1:1), respectively. It showed that the overall variation of zeta potential as a function of pH was intensified in a colloidal dispersion with the ratio of 1:1. It was concerned that the double action of ion would contribute to this result. On the one hand, the zeta potentials of each colloidal dispersion commonly decreased at the state of strong acid and base under the influence of compression of the electric double layer. The changing patterns were also considered through calculating total interaction energy between colloidal particles based on DLVO theory and measuring turbidity of the colloidal dispersions.

  • Fluorine compounds are the essential chemicals for wet processes of semiconductor and LCD production line. Problems of conventional treatments for fluoride wastewater are their high operation costs and low fluoride removal capacity. In this study, cement paste containing various Ca-bearing hydrates such as portlandite, calcium silicate hydrate(CSH), and ettringite was investigated for fluoride removal. The objectives of this study are to assess the feasibility of using cement paste cured mixture of cement and water as an alternative agent for treatment of fluoride wastewater and to investigate fluoride removal capacity of the cement paste. The performance of cement paste was comparable to that of lime in the kinetic test. In column experiment where the effluent fluoride concentrations were below 0.5 mg/L. Then the leached calcium reached the maximum level of 800 mg/L. The nitrate reduced to the level of less than 10 mg/L. Nitrate in the wastewater was exchanged with interlayer sulfate of these cement hydrate LDHs. Phosphate concentration could be reduced to 10 mg/L by forming calcium phosphate. These results indicate that the cement paste generally has advantageous characteristics as an economical and viable substitute for lime to remove fluoride.

  • Nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid are used for acid pickling in zirconium alloy tubing manufacturing process. Nitrate and fluoride in the wastewater were treated by chemical coagulation and SOD (Sulfur Oxidation Denitrification) process. This study is investigated the effect of fluoride concentration and the optimal condition for SOD process. The limited fluoride concentration for SOD process was below 20 mg F-/L. The adjusted pH and alkalinity by NaOH and $NaHCO_3$ was shown to be more effective for removal of nitrate compared with using NaOH. Furthermore, the microbial activator mixed trace elements and ingredient for alkalinity did not only supplement with alkalinity but also enhance the growth and proliferation for sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. As a result, the inorganic industrial wastewater was successfully treated by the microbial activator in SOD process without continuous addition of seed sludge. Finally, SOD process was shown to remove nitrate in industrial wastewater and to contribute the microbial activator for activation of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria.

  • Oxygen transfer rate generally determines the performance of an aerobic wastewater treatment process that treats high strength wastewater such as food wastewater, animal wastewater and landfill leachate. In this paper, OUR and $K_L{\cdot}a$ were evaluated by using Jet Loop Reactor (JLR) according to the concentration of a mixed liquor volatile suspended solid (MLVSS), oxygen (air) flow rate and energy input as the variable of the operating conditions. Also, a nonlinear regression model was proposed by the statistical methods with the calculated $K_L{\cdot}a$. As a results, in case of applying the high strength wastewater which has to maintain high MLVSS, the energy input and the air flow rate are major parameters oxygen transfer rate in JLR. Finally, the final nonlinear regression model had been developed as a function of E/V, $Q_g$, and ${\mu}_c$.

  • This study was focused on removal efficiency of complex (or mixed) wastewater from agricultural and industrial plant for advanced treatments by HBR-II process, that was well known to be suitable to the treatment of livestock wastewater. The main purpose of this study was intended to evaluate the applicable feasibility of the HBR-II for revamping the present activated sludge process to the advanced one. And also, the settling study including the batch typed experimental column tests was performed to evaluate the coagulation stability of organic colloidal particles in wastewater. The mid-scale plant of HBR-II process between pilot and laboratory was used for this study. As F/M ratio remains constant in the range of 0.20~0.25 $BOD_5/Kg{\cdot}MLSS/Day$, the efficiency of biological treatment increased. It has been shown that the results of biodegradation study were, for removal efficiency(%), $BOD_5$ 98.4%, $COD_{Mn}$ 92.9%, SS 97.5%, T-N 91.3%, T-P 82.3%, respectively, which were relatively higher than other processes. From this study, HBR-II process would be well applied to the biological treatment of agricultural and industrial complex wastewater.

  • Lab-scale experiments have been carried out to investigate the effect of F/R ratio of ASBR (Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor) process on the removal of the organic matters in ammonia stripped swine wastewater. Three ASBR inoculated with sludge mixed with granular sludge of UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) and anaerobic digested sludge of municipal wastewater treatment plant were operated. Ammonia stripped swine wastewater was used as influent. Prior to conducting the experiments with varied conditions, the effect of increasing organic loading rate from 2.34 to $5.79gTCOD_{Cr}/L$-day at a fixed F/R ratio of 0.1 on the organic removal efficiency has been studied during start-up period. As the result of the experiment, under the condition of varied organic loadings, less than $4.14gTCOD_{Cr}/L$-day, the removed efficiency $TCOD_{Cr}$ of the ASBR process is 83% resulted from the mean value of effluent $TCOD_{Cr}$, 9,125 mg/L during the start-up period. Then ASBRs were operated with F/R ratio of 0.024, 0.303 and 0.91 respectively. Organic loading rate was increased from 4.56 to $15.43gTCOD_{Cr}/L$-day to investigate the effects of F/R ratio and organic loading rate on the organic removal efficiency. As the result of the experiment, less than $6.23gTCOD_{Cr}/L$/L-day, F/R ratio haven't an effect on the organic removal efficiency and the mean removal efficiency of TSS, $TCOD_{Cr}$ and $SCOD_{Cr}$ was about 80%, 86% and 78% at the all of F/R ratio. But as organic loading rate was increased from 8.54 to $12.04gTCOD_{Cr}/L$-day at the F/R ratio of 0.024, the removal efficiency of $SCOD_{Cr}$ decreased from 71% to 63%. The range of decreased removal efficiency of $SCOD_{Cr}$ at the F/R ratio of 0.024 was much more higher than at the F/R ratio of 0.303, 0.91. Thus, as organic loading rate was increased, ASBRs were operated with high F/R ratio to obtain high removal efficiency.
